Installing the Software (free) 1. Download and install GnuPG and Cryptophane from here: gnupg exe (If this link is broken, it means there is a new version. Go to to check). 2. Once installed, start Cryptophane by going to Start > All Programs > Cryptophane

2 Generating your own key 1. Click Keys > Generate Secret Key 2. Fill out the key information form. Be sure to choose a password that you will remember, because you ll need to know the password when you go to decrypt a message! 3. Click Generate once you re done filling out the form. While the key generates, you need to constantly move your mouse to help the computer be more random. Up and down, side to side, as random as possible! Once you re done, the key will show up in the list. Share your key with your friends so they can send you secret messages! Send your key to the keyserver at MIT (preferred) 1. Click Keys > Send to Keyserver

3 2. Select your key, and click Send. your key directly to your friend (alternate) 1. Export your public key, so other people can send you encrypted information. a. Click File > Export Public Keys b. Select the key you just made, and click OK.

4 2. Save the file to your desktop as something like bob.key (if your name is Bob). 3. Send the key to your friends! 4. You can now this public key to your friends. They can use it to encrypt messages and files to send to you over the public internet. Only you can decrypt them because you: i. Have the private key as well (generated with the secret key) ii. Have the password. 5. Send this key to your friends! Decrypting a Message or file. Remember, you need to know the password for your personal key to decrypt your messages! 1. If you received the message in an as an attachment, save it to your desktop or my documents. 2. If the icon looks like this: then all you have to do is double click it. The program will prompt you where you want to save the file. Save it to your desktop, and it will decode. 3. If the icon does not look like that, then do this: a. Open Cryptophane. b. Click File > Decrypt. c. Browse to the file, and select it. d. Enter a new file name. The program will save the old encrypted file, and make a new file to save the decrypted information. Make sure you pay attention to where you put it! e. Enter the password for your key. f. Done! Your receive file has now been decrypted. Sending Encrypted information to Other People. First, the other people have to send you their public key. Once you have it, save it to your desktop (or some other convenient place), and then import the key into Cryptophane. Get your friend s key from the key server: 1. Go to and enter your friend s address in the search engine, and click Do the Search.

5 2. Copy the resulting key ID to the clipboard: 3. In Cryptophane, click Keys > Get Key from Keyserver 4. Paste the Key ID in the box, and click Get Key. To import the key someone sent you: 1. Click File > Import Keys 2. Select the key file.

6 3. Complete the wizard. 4. Sign the newly imported key: a. Right click the key, and select Sign Key. b. The program will double check with you to make sure you are sure you want to sign the key. Tick the checkbox that says you re positive, and click OK. Trust the key you just imported To Encrypt the File or Message By right clicking the file 1. Right click the file, and select Encrypt and Sign Tick the box for the recipient that you re sending the message or file to: 4. Click Process. 5. Attach the encrypted (output file) to an and send!

7 From the Cryptophane program itself Just use File > Encrypt and Sign, browse to the file, and complete with wizard using the imported key for the recipient of the message!
