3 About URJC Rey Juan Carlos University is the most modern of all public universities in Madrid. It has four campuses, located in Móstoles, Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada and Vicálvaro (Madrid), as well as its Foundation in the centre of the city. It was created in 1996 with the objective of offering all-round preparation for its students, combining, theoretical teaching with training in laboratories and companies, thus facilitating rapid access to the labour market. This university currently has an enrolment of more than 31,000 students (3,200 international ones from over a hundred countries from all over the world) and a staff of more than 2,300 members, including both teachers and administrative personnel. Rey Juan Carlos University is in close contact and collaborates with the internacional scientific community and participates in exchange programmes for both teachers and students. Research and technological innovation are one of its most important mainstays, as well as its commitment and connection with business sectors in a free-flowing universitybusiness relationship, making it a university prepared to confront the challenges of the 21st Century. How to reach the campuses? Where is Rey Juan Carlos University? Rey Juan Carlos University is located in the East and Southern part of Madrid and is very accesible by public transport, underground, buses and railway. Barajas Airport: Is only 12 km. away from the city centre. Public Transportation to the city centre: Metro and bus (price 2 ). Taxi Service: Price from 20 to 40 depending on the kilometres and the taximeter. Shuttle service: Reservations are required. The current price: from 45 for 3 people to 75 for 7 people. 9 Spanish Course for Erasmus Munde Students Erasmus and Munde students can attend freely to a 45 hours-spanish course for Erasmus during a semester October-December or January-April. Language Courses can be transferred with free election credits (4,5 credits). Intelligent University Card: The Intelligent University Card offers several services both inside and outside the university. Once you have enrolled at university, you will get a user and a password to borrow books in the library, to use WI-FI network freely in the campus and access to your own service portal, virtual campus, webmail etc.). 12 Living in Madrid THE ADVANTAGES of studying in Spain, and in Madrid Spanish is a language in expansion. Spanish is spoken by more than 400 million people in the world. It is the official language of 21 countries. It is the language most studied as a second language: currently more than 46 million people study Spanish in the world. It is currently considered the second language for international communication. The UNESCO estimates that in the 21st Century, Spanish will be more important than English and there will be more speakers of Spanish than English. WHY STUDY IN SPAIN? AND WHY MADRID? The best way to become familiar with a culture and learn a language is to study in the country because it will be quicker, easier and more efficient. The Spanish educational system is internationally recognized for its excellent quality and outstanding organization. Spain currently ranks third as a European destination for international students, following England and Ireland.
