1 Course outline Code: JST203 Title: Issues in Crime and Criminal Justice Faculty of: Arts and Business School of: Communication and Creative Industries Teaching Session: Semester 1 Year: 2015 Course Coordinator: Professor Tim Prenzler tprenzle@usc.edu.au Telephone: Location: T What is this course about? 1.1 Course description Issues in Crime and Criminal Justice is an advanced course of study for those undertaking a major in Justice Studies. As an advanced course it builds on the introductory material considered in JST102 Foundations of Criminology. A range of current and topical issues is explored. Issues covered include current contexts for long standing debates in juvenile justice, aboriginal justice, corporate crime, drug related crime and sexual offending; and emergent polemics for the 21st century, such as violence at work and the role of forensics. 1.2 Course content Grasping the significant contemporary ideas in crime and justice contexts including risk, restorative justice, therapeutic jurisprudence and terrorism insights into violence, drug-related crime, youth crime, white-collar crime, cyber-crime and crimes against the environment Raising certain issues relating to forensics, culture, media, mental health and experts in court 2. Oral Presentation and hardcopy of essay to tutor Hardcopy In exam venue Assessment Task 1: Minor Assignment (Presentation and Report) Goal: Product: Format: Criteria This assessment is designed for you to present your critical thinking, analytical and communication skills and to research different approaches to criminology that are of interest to you. Essay Paper and oral presentation Submission of the 800 word essay on the presentation is due with and on the same day as your formal presentation. You are to individually present material for minutes and lead the subsequent discussion on the topic, which should relate to the topic. The course coordinator will provide a sample presentation in the Week 4 tutorial, which will provide information about the structure and content of the presentation. The presentation and essay will be marked as one piece of assessment. The following criteria will be applied to the essay: Demonstration of knowledge: a systematic presentation of relevant knowledge addressing the nature and scope of the question posed. Demonstration of understanding: a logical application and evaluation of relevant knowledge to the assignment question. Demonstration of academic research skills: evidence of sound research and accurate and appropriate referencing of sources. Demonstration of academic writing skills: appropriate and effective structuring of arguments, clarity of expression and correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling. The following criteria will be applied to the presentation: Presented at an appropriate speed with audible and varied delivery. Presented as a series of important points by Powerpoint, not as a paper read directly to the class/group.

Prepare questions and facilitate small group discussions after the presentation. Skill assessment level Assessment Task 2: Major Assignment (Essay) Goal: In this essay you will explore, critique and demonstrate your understandings of key concepts and issues relating to crime and criminal justice. You will be given a choice of two topics, from which you have to choose one. Topics will be made available on Blackboard and in Lecture and Tutorial from week 6. You will be advised of the exact time and date that this assessment item is due during the introductory lecture, in tutorial and on Blackboard. and demonstrating your research, analytical and written communication skills. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Information literacy Communication Assessment Task 3: Final Examination (Open Book-Textbook Only) Goal: Product: Format: You will demonstrate your understanding and knowledge of the complexities of the Crime and Criminal Justice issues and how they impact on society. Examination The exam will be timetabled in the exam weeks at the end of semester. A centrally scheduled final examination will be held for this course. Questions may be drawn from any area of crime or criminal justice covered in the course. The final examination will be two hours in duration, with 10 minutes perusal (2 hours and 10 minutes in total). The Examination is open book (recommended textbook only permitted) and will consist of a number of problem (case study) questions, with the possible inclusion of multiple choice and/or short answers questions. You MUST not
5 Page 5 make any handwritten notes in your textbook if you wish to take it into the examination venue with you. More details on the final examination will be provided in lectures and tutorials, particularly the revision lectures and tutorials. Criteria Assessment of performance in the final examination will be made according to each student s: Demonstration of knowledge of crime and criminal justice, as evidenced by accurate recognition/statement of relevant principles. Demonstration of understanding of the principles of crime and criminal justiceapplication of principles to the fact situations as stated and/or discussion of relevant topics. Demonstration of requisite academic communication skills, as evidenced by logical structure of arguments, appropriateness of conclusions, and use of accurate and appropriate expression. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Communication 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
