What is this course about? 1.1 Course description The online world is constantly changing and therefore, this course is dynamic. This course provides you with an understanding of online journalism. It teaches formats and skills for writing journalism for online publications, as well a basic understanding of multimedia journalism. It examines the major theoretical debates around online news delivery and gives you the practical skills to produce specialist online reports. Influences on online journalism, such as participatory journalism, design considerations, multi-media; media convergence, law, and copyright are covered. You will participate in the online publishing process, build a portfolio of published articles, and learn online photojournalism skills. 1.2 Course content writing news for publication online differences between publishing news online and in other media online headings and introductions the role of social media in journalism legal issues and online publishing publishing images and multimedia online 2. Product: Breaking news story Format: You will be required to write a breaking news story using information provided to you in class in week 5. Criteria demonstrated understanding of news values quality of introduction and headline demonstrated understanding of the online medium quality of writing style style and grammar Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Information literacy Communication Assessment Task 2: Audio slideshow Goal: Product: Format: For you to demonstrate your ability to produce an audio-visual story for the web. Audio slideshow You will research and produce a 90 second audio-visual story for the web using photographs taken by you and sound recorded by you. This is a web piece using visuals to help tell the story. Your story needs to be produced for a Sunshine Coast audience and include at least two grabs from sources who you have never met before. Grabs should be the original recordings as recorded by you. The finished product must be published on YouTube. 4 Page 4 Applying technologies Assessment Task 3: Blog posts Goal: Product: Format: For you to critically engage with contemporary journalism issues Blog post You will be required to write two 400-word blog posts during tutorials in Weeks 12 and 13. Based on your individual research, the blog post should identify and discuss a relevant media issue. Criteria evidence of critical/analytical journalism demonstration of the use of the online medium style and grammar Generic skill assessed Applying technologies Communication Skill assessment level 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
