What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This course is aimed at providing you with an appreciation of managerial skills necessary to develop, evaluate and manage a small business successfully as well as to evaluate the feasibility of business ideas, appreciate the realities of finding venture capital for business opportunities and prepare business plans for business growth. After an introductory overview of small business in Australia the course is presented in three parts; firstly, the small business development process, secondly, the feasibility and planning stages of the small business, and finally, operational considerations in achieving business success. 1.2 Course content Small business: definitions and characteristics Various options for going into small business Market research and strategy formulation Preparing a small business development plan Sample small business development plan Accessing small business advice and assistance ICT as a business tool Legal Issues Ethics and Social Entrepreneurship Franchising and the Entrepreneur Financing business ventures Financial information and management Marketing International opportunities for small business Location and Distribution Operations management Human Resources Issues in new and small firms Community context of small business

Product: Test Format: This is an individual assessment. You will be required to complete two (2) tests (Please see schedule on Blackboard). Each of the tests will vary in content and may consist of: a recorded radio interview; a letter to the editor; true/false questions; multiple choice questions; short answer; short case study questions. Your lecturer/tutor will provide full details on Blackboard tests will be held in Week 5 and Week 13. Criteria Understanding and application of requisite theoretical frameworks and concepts. 4 Page 4 Problem solving Assessment Task 2: Small Business Development Plan Goal: Product: Format: The purpose of this task is to use collaborative skills to develop specialized business consultancy expertise through group work and enhanced professional business written communication skills. Business plan This is a group assessment - this will be a group mark Your consulting teams are required to consult with your client, analyse and interpret their needs and then communicate written recommendations in the form of a professional small business development plan. Each team will also produce and submit a full set of agendas, minutes and action sheets for each of their business Small Business Development Plan (Please refer to Blackboard for further information) - You are required to provide only ONE (1) COPY of the Small Business Development Plan this must be submitted to Blackboard via SafeAssign. - You are to provide ONE (1) electronic copy of the agenda, minutes and action sheets. Criteria Analysis and interpretation of clients needs Financial / Economic analysis and interpretation Competitive analysis and potential market analysis Appropriate business level communication and presentation in a professional small business development plan Preparation of agenda, minutes and action sheets (NB Refer to full marketing schedule on Blackboard - Strict word limits will be adhered to.) Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Collaboration Problem solving Assessment Task 3: Small Business Development Plan - Presentation Goal: Product Format Criteria The purpose of this task is to use collaborative skills to develop specialized business consultancy expertise through group work whilst enhancing professional business verbal presentation and communication skills Business plan presentation This is a group assessment this will be a group mark. You will be required to present a 10 minute overview of your group s Small Business Development Plan findings and recommendations, including ethical issues relevant to your client s needs. - A hard copy of the presentation will be presented to the client and examiner at the time of the presentation. NB Detailed criteria can be found on Blackboard and will be discussed in class. critical analysis, research and application of theory to the clients small business situation their business development requirements

This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
