What is this course about? 1.1 Course description The aim of this unit is to focus on the implementation of corporate international business strategy and policy for global success in large multinational companies and in small and medium sized enterprise. As one of the capstone units in the International Business major, it is designed to build upon the knowledge base of previous units, introducing students to the strategic international business and management strategies taken by firms, and to expose students to the strategic choices with which international business manager s face in the international environment. 1.2 Course content Part A: Bases for international strategy o Drivers of globalization o Industry competition in global contexts o Leveraging resources and capabilities internationally Part B: Internationalising a single business o Internationalising the entrepreneurial firm o Entering foreign markets o Managing global competitive dynamics o Borrowing and leveraging resources alliances and networks o Borrowing and leveraging resources - national competitive advantage o Responding to the entry of MNCs o Accessing emerging markets Part C: Internationalising complex businesses corporate strategy o Structures for complexity o Corporate Social Responsibility and international strategy

Specific Learning Outcomes Assessment Tasks Qualities On successful completion of this course you should be able to: Apply international business strategy concepts to the challenges that managers face in the domestic and global business arena. Identify and explain the key international business strategy concepts that specifically relate large multi-national enterprise (MNE) firm strategy. Identify and explain the key international business strategy concepts that specifically relate the small and mediumsized (SME) enterprise firm strategy. Identify and appraise that environmental conditions and performance of particular business in industries where MNEs and SMEs exist. Product: The assessment comprises an international business strategy article analysis. Format: The essay should be no more than 1200 words in length, providing analysis of a recent article relating to the field of international business strategy and its implications for business and its stakeholders. See Blackboard for more details. Criteria Insight and understanding of relevant concepts identification and application of relevant theory and course material to the question use of research materials, the integration of ideas and the logical development of an argument academic writing skills (structure, expression, referencing). 4 Page 4 Goal: The case study will be based upon topics covered up to week 9 inclusive. You will demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to critically analyse, key aspects of strategy and application within international business domain. Product: Written answers to a set of questions Format: This is a 2000 word individual assignment. Criteria demonstrate an understanding of key concepts of international business strategy application of relevant theory and research critical analysis of key international business strategies and applications professional writing and presentation skills. Generic skill assessed Communication Problem solving Skill assessment level Assessment Task 3: Exam Goal: The purpose of this task is to demonstration your understanding and application of theories and conceptual frameworks Product: Exam Format: The format of the final exam will be a combination of a case study and essay questions. This is an individual assessment. Criteria demonstrate an understanding of key concepts of international business strategy application of relevant course concepts critical analysis of key international business strategies and applications Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Problem solving 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task.

5 Page 5 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
