Note: For teachers who are seeking qualification in an additional area of concentration in the primary division (Ont. 184/97, Section 28 and 29). must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement unless accompanied by an "Entry Letter" issued by the Ontario College of Teachers. provide evidence of an acceptable university degree
4 Basic teaching strategies emphasizing communication (language arts and mathematics); a consideration of curriculum matters of concern to primary teachers in these subject areas; examination of provincial curriculum documents and theories of child development as they relate to communications. Lectures, seminar. Note: open to certified primary grade teachers
5 What do Ontario s teachers do on their summer vacation? Well, some of them relax at home or at a summer retreat, others travel to faraway destinations, and many of them go to summer school to enhance their teaching qualifications. The Centre for Continuing Teacher Education at Brock University has been offering all- season Additional Qualifications Courses for teachers for years. Teachers can specialize in different disciplines such as reading, drama, and science, as well as in different divisions primary, junior, intermediate, or senior. With the advent of technology, we can now offer courses online through the internet. Instructors can teach and students can learn from the comfort of their home or anywhere else in the world that is connected. This type of distance learning provides flexibility and means that Brock can attract candidates from a variety of locales. A minimum of 15 students confirmed by February 1, 2012 required to run course
6 Hence the equation: holidays + travel + learning = success Teachers seeking to gain the part 1 of the 3 part Primary Education Specialist course, or an additional basic qualifications in the primary division (JK- grade 3) may start the course online through Brock, travel to England, and observe and teach in a British Primary School for 2 weeks in July to achieve this goal. This British Experience will take place in Chichester, the county town of West Sussex on the southern coast of England. Chichester is a charming walled town with a population of 25,000 that dates back to the Roman times. It is well-known for its Festival Theatre of the Performing Arts and the ornately spired Chichester Cathedral (not to be confused with Winchester Cathedral!). Our teachers will stay in the student residence at the University of Chichester or at the Travelodge Hotel and will be immersed in the culture of a school system renowned for its developmentally-appropriate curriculum and student-centred learning. This type of comparative education will offer participants an authentic and a new perspective to bring back to their schools.
7 The course expectations will be the same a course offered at Brock Campus. The delivery mode will include two distinct components: hours online May June hours of practicum in England hours of practicum in England July 2 to July 13, 2012
8 You will spend 10 days in a primary school settings. Your practicum will involve focused observation, discussions with colleagues, working with students, and some formal teaching.
9 The online component will include readings, short answer tasks, and online chats. The Culminating Project for the course will be a comparative analysis of the two educational systems. (i.e. Ontario and West Sussex)
