SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS In Her Own Words: Shanna Emanuel Claremont Savings Bank I started my banking career in June of 2010 as a full-time teller at Claremont Savings Bank. Like many people, I was signed up to take Principals of Banking within a few months of working at the bank. The class not only introduced me to CFTEA but it also gave me the itch to learn more. By taking advantage of the classes offered by CFTEA and having a supportive work environment, I was able to quickly grow within the company. I earned a promotion to a Teller Coordinator in 2011 and then in 2012 I was promoted to the Customer Service team at our Main Office. In July of 2013 I took on my current role as an Assistant Branch Manager. Throughout my time with Claremont Savings Bank, management has encouraged and supported my continued education. It has always been one of my goals to attend college and earn a degree but unfortunately after high school I couldn t find the time or funds to go back to school. So, I really can t praise CFTEA enough for providing the education I long desired. Over the past 8 years I have taken many classes. I started off working towards and earning my Teller Certification. After passing the Certified Teller Exam I knew I wanted to continue my education with CFTEA. Over the past 8 years I have received, the Supervisors Certificate, General Banking Diploma, Bank Operations Diploma, Advanced Financial Services Diploma, Banking and Finance Diploma and the. What I want you to know about CFTEA is that there are classes for every department, just about every topic and for all levels of employees. The online courses allow you to take courses when it works best for you. It s ok to take one class a year or 3 at a time it s all up to what works best for you. If you are not sure where to get started just ask the CFTEA staff. They can answer your questions and point you in the right direction. The CFTEA staff and all of the teachers I have had the pleasure of working with have been friendly, knowledgeable and encouraging. CFTEA has helped me grow as a banker, as a professional and as a person. In the coming years I plan on continuing taking CFTEA courses until I run out of classes to take or until I retire. There is always something new to learn and I encourage all bankers to take advantage of the courses offered by CFTEA. 15 SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS In Her Own Words: Melissa Dahlgren Katahdin Trust Company I have been working in the banking industry for 13 years. I started my banking career with TD Bank in 2005, as a part time teller. Three short years later, I began my career with Katahdin Trust Company and recently celebrated 10 years of service. Over my 10 years with Katahdin Trust my roles have included Teller, Branch Service Representative, Customer Service Representative, Retail Services Assistant, and currently Customer Service Representative II lender. Each new role brought new learning opportunities and growth within the bank. I absolutely love what I do! In 2007 I began taking classes with CFT by enrolling in Principles of Banking. This was the perfect introduction to the banking industry. After completing that first class I was hooked. That class led me to want to earn my General Banking diploma. I would recommend to anyone to start with the classes required for this diploma, especially those new to banking like I was. These classes will provide a good banking foundation to build on. I know it did for me. Since then, I have gone on to receive 9 certificates or diplomas, and have a list of classes I plan to take. My learning is not done yet! If I had an opportunity to talk to people about CFT, I would tell them to take advantage of this great resource. CFT has a class for every aspect of your banking career. The knowledge and experience that they will gain from taking classes is something that they will have forever. The class instructors are always willing to help and guide you, and the staff at CFT is amazing. Anytime I have ever had a question they are always quick to respond and help me out. My experience with CFT has been rewarding. My future plan in banking is to one day become a Branch Manager. I believe that CFT is part of this plan. I am currently looking at completing the Supervisor Certificate and possibly teaming up with CFT and St. Joseph s College to earn my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: Banking Major. Only time will tell what is in my future, but I look forward to being a lifelong learner! If I had an opportunity to talk to people about CFTEA, I would tell them to take advantage of this great resource. CFTEA has a class for every aspect of your banking career. The knowledge and experience that they will gain from taking classes is something that they will have forever. ~M. Dahlgren Page 15

SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS In Her Own Words: Kirstin Rogers Northfield Savings Bank My name is Kirstin Rogers and I have worked for Northfield Savings Bank since 2012, after graduating from Vermont Technical College where I earned my Bachelor s degree in Business Management & Technology. In my time with Northfield Savings Bank I ve held a couple of different positions. I started as an entry level Community Banker 1 and worked my way up to Community Banker 2, and have recently been promoted to Sr. Community Banker. My responsibilities now include consumer lending, opening transactional accounts for businesses and individuals, and helping to manage all branch activities. I have been successful in all of my roles with the help of CFTEA and internal training programs offered by Northfield Savings Bank. Each position has had its own learning experiences that I feel have helped me grow my banking knowledge and my ability to help the customers I serve. I first learned about CFTEA through Deb Williams, Northfield Savings Bank s VP HR of Operations, Training and Development. Deb encouraged me to start my CFTEA and banking career off by taking Principles of Banking. I took a lot of useful information from that class that helped me to understand the general concepts of banking. From there, I decided to work towards the CFTEA General Banking Diploma. The variety of classes required by the General Banking Diploma really helped deepen my understanding and knowledge of banking. One of the most helpful and informational classes that I took for the General Banking Diploma was Laws and Banking: Principles. This class dealt with many banking regulations and laws, which was very helpful as a new banker and a new CFTEA student. Knowing the regulations and laws helped me understand why as a banker, things needed to be done a certain way. It s very important to be able to tell customers why we do things a certain way; there is a regulation for that! I have continued my CFTEA journey by taking multiple classes in order to gain more knowledge that will help me in all aspects of my career. So far with CFTEA I have received my General Banking Diploma, Intro to Lending Diploma, Advanced Financial Service Diploma, Bank Operations Diploma, Consumer Banking Diploma, Banking and Finance Diploma, and my Supervisor/team Leader Certificate. I plan to continue training with CFTEA in hopes of completing the and Diploma. I think CFTEA is very important to the development to any position held at a financial institution, as it is very relevant and concepts are made easy to learn. The support staff and instructors are knowledgeable, easy to connect with and are available whenever there is a question. They are also extremely helpful in transferring credits from colleges. I was able to transfer some credits from my previous collegiate experience at Vermont Technical College and Community College of Vermont. This greatly helped me further my CFTEA endeavors. Their support and willingness to help bankers achieve their goals is exceptional. I would encourage anyone to look into CFTEA and see how it could help you grow your own career. Page 16 I think CFTEA is very important to the development to any position held at a financial institution, as it is very relevant and concepts are made easy to learn. ~K. Rogers ~J.Moffatt

SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS In Her Own Words: Megan Page Claremont Savings Bank I started my banking career in June of 2012 after graduating college with an Associates in Accounting. I was hired at Claremont Savings Bank as a teller and right away was encouraged by my manager to start taking courses at CFTEA. As I was taking classes at CFTEA I applied for a position in the Operations department as an Operations Specialist I and was offered the job in After transferring I had completed the Supervisor Certificate, Personal Banker Certificate, and my Bank Service Provider Certificate. Once I had received my first three certificates I wanted to do more with CFTEA because the courses help me learn and understand more about banking. A year later I had completed three more certificates, Consumer Banking, Introduction to Lending, and Bank Operations Certificate. Taking classes with CFTEA has helped me realize how much I enjoy banking as a career and that there is always something new to learn. Last year at Claremont Savings Bank Wellness Fair I spoke with a woman from New England School of Business and decided I wanted to complete a degree in Banking and Finance. Since then I have completed 2 classes and only need four more to get my degree. In March of 2018 I was also promoted to Operations Specialist II. I believe taking courses at CFTEA has helped me grow as a banker and helped me realize I d like to continue banking as my career. After I complete my Associates in Banking and Finance next year I want to continue my education with CFTEA and earn more certificates. Taking classes with CFTEA has helped me realize how much I enjoy banking as a career and that there is always something new to learn. ~M. Page Page 17

MESSAGE FROM CFTEA s INCOMING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In His Own Words: Andrew Lederer CFTEA Executive Director With a background in teaching, I.T. and process management, I began working at a community bank in Within a few years, I had transitioned to deposit operations for front line programming support, began working at a local community college as adjunct faculty and starting teaching for CFTEA. There are usually a number of questions related to my I.T. background and how that matches with training. Over the years I have had the desire and the unique support of supervisors that have allowed me opportunities to enhance user understanding of Microsoft software while developing software that met their needs. Listening has always been key when approaching any type of process management or programming changes. Listening is also a key skill for those that instruct in a way that enhances student understanding and allows you to grow as an instructor. At one point I even ran a weekly column in a company newsletter entitled Ask Andy which then transformed into Ask Andrew where I answered employee questions and provided tips on how to better use the Microsoft Office products. While I was teaching I was looking for opportunities to provide volunteer time to CFTEA and I was asked to join the board of directors. My time on the board, including the executive committee, allowed me professional development opportunities with my peers and to interact with others that had a passion for learning and development. I completed certificates and diplomas that supported my knowledge of the banking environment but only because I had the backing of amazing supervisors that gave me the right coaching. I was afforded the opportunity to become a certified Myers-Briggs practitioner. I gained experience and personally took the next step of becoming a Myers-Briggs Master Practitioner which allowed me the unique opportunity to work with all levels within multiple organizations in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. Recently, I moved into a senior management position at large community action program in Southern Maine where I oversaw Operations, Human Resources, Marketing, Volunteers and Resource Development. By working closely with the financial side of the non-profit I was able to add new skills to my experience. In 2017, I applied for a grant that helped me reach a professional goal taking my third Disney Institute course, Leadership Excellence. The guidance in this week-long course helped bring fundamental and positive changes to me and to the programs that reported to me, resulting in critical savings. Throughout my career, I have appreciated and valued supervisors and the CFTEA community as ones that supported my desire for life long learning. Along the way, I have met and been inspired by so many people, such as CFTEA students that overcome obstacles to continue their education within the business world. It is important for me to take my experiences from I.T., process management, human resources, operations, non-profit and adult learning and bring them to my role as the new Executive Director of CFTEA. It is with great excitement that I look forward to hearing board, instructor and student feedback on continuing the excellent legacy of CFTEA. Throughout my career, I have appreciated and valued supervisors and the CFTEA community as ones that supported my desire for life long learning. ~A. Lederer Page 18

BEST WISHES ON YOUR RETIREMENT TANYA AND JOHANNE! It was around 1986 when the story of CFTEA began. While working for Key Bank, Tanya Kolonoski began volunteering for the Portland Maine Chapter of the American Institute of Banking (AIB). Tanya transitioned to the full time Education Director for Portland and York Maine AIB in September of On July 1,1995 the six volunteer AIB chapters in Maine consolidated with Tanya as the Executive Director of the new Maine AIB. In December of that same year Johanne Randall joined Tanya as Maine AIB s Office Manager. In July 1997 the two volunteer Vermont AIB Chapters and the four volunteer New Hampshire AIB Chapters joined Maine AIB and Nothern New England AIB was born with Tanya and Johanne leading the charge for banking education in Northern New England. In 2000, due to the reorganization of AIB, the organization s name changed to Northern New England Center for Financial Training (NNECFT) but it continued to provide the tri-state area with the same quaility banking education for the region s bankers. NNECFT grew yet again in the Spring of 2013 when it merged with the Center for Financial Training in Norfolk, Virginia (CFTVA) and became the Center for Finanacial Training and Education Alliance CFTEA. Tanya and Johanne have put in over 55 years building CFTEA into the organization you know today providing the banking education you have come to trust. Despite changes in banking, technology, and the world in general, they produced and distributed catalogs of classes, program fliers, organized banquets and annual conferences they have made it all happen! In early November 2018 both Tanya and Johanne will be retiring. THANK YOU! to both of you for the dedication and hard work you have brought to CFTEA, its financial institutions and students. Enjoy your retirement! Page 19
