2 Including the Caregiver: A Mind-Body Approach to Mental Health In order to be truly effective, a mind-body approach to mental health must also include the caregiver. Matthew Sanford uses his remarkable story of trauma and loss, of yoga and paralysis, to bring audiences inside the mindbody relationship. Participants explore the mind-body nature of mental illness, while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the role that their own self-care plays in improving client outcomes. Matthew Sanford Matthew Sanford is a nationally recognized yoga teacher, a sought-after public speaker, founder the non-profit Mind Body Solutions, and a paraplegic for the last thirty-three years. He is the author of the critically acclaimed WAKING: A MEMOIR OF TRAUMA AND TRANSCENDENCE (Rodale: 2006) and speaks at conferences, corporations, and higher learning institutions nationwide. Matthew has also emerged as a leading voice in the integrated health movement. He won the 2010 Pioneer of Integrative Medicine Award from the California Pacific Medical Center s Institute of Health and Healing. Previous recipients include Dr. Deepok Chopra, Dr. Dean Ornish, and Dr. Mehmet Oz. He also has appeared on NBC s Today Show, People Magazine, and American Public Media s On Being.
3 Equine Assisted Therapy as a Treatment Strategy for Mental Health and Wellness Come enjoy learning about the healing power of Equine Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Therapy in mental health. We will explore some hands on work in this area and gain some tools and resources to work with clients and ourselves. Molly DePrekel, MA, LP CEIP-MH, is a psychologist in private practice both at the Midwest Center for Trauma and Emotional Healing and Hold Your Horses. Molly is co-founder of Minnesota Linking Individuals, Nature and Critters (MNLINC) and has utilized the unique relationship people have with animals to assist her in client therapy for over twenty years. She served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota and has taught and facilitated workshops around the world as an EPONA Equestrian Services approved instructor. Molly is the Co-Chair of the Certified Board of Equine Interaction Professionals and a contributing author to the book, Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling: Adding Animal Assisted Therapy to Your Practice. Achieving Health and Wholeness with Energy Therapies If you enjoyed Sheila s presentation last year, you ll enjoy her dynamic, engaging style again as she shares energy healing techniques to balance the energy in your body, mind and spirit. Learn how self-care can help you journey into wholeness and feel in balance physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Feel renewed and rejuvenated so that you can keep your energy in balance, even during stressful times. Sheila Judd, MA, is a consultant for the Benedictine Health System, energy healer, presenter and trainer specializing in Integrative Health. She is passionate about health and wellness and helping individuals and organizations through holistic healing. Sheila was formerly the Director of Integrative Health and Healing programs at Anoka-Ramsey Community College where she was instrumental in developing the credit programs in Integrative Health and Healing. Sheila is a frequent presenter and meditation leader at classes, workshops, and conferences. Sheila is a Qigong Master Healer and Certified Qigong Instructor, Certified Healing Touch Practitioner and Quick Pulse Energy Healing Practitioner. She holds a B.A. in Business/Marketing and a M.A. in Human Resource Development/ Organization Development.
4 Using Biofeedback in Clinical Counseling: Help with Anxiety, Depression, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders Adding biofeedback to your clinical practice increases the range and intensity of problems you can help. Biofeedback of various types produces very strong responses in most people. Most patients experience a new sense of themselves and their symptoms when using biofeedback. For example, instead of the mysterious headache, the person getting muscle tension biofeedback recognizes that their head aches because they habitually clench their jaw, lift their eyebrows or frown. This tension is made visible and concrete on the computer screen. There is often a powerful effect on parents of children with anxiety, ASD, and other disorders of childhood when for the first time they really see the emotional reactivity their child has, made manifest and concrete with biofeedback. This workshop will introduce you to the skills needed to use electromyographic (muscle tension), thermal (skin temperature), galvanic skin response (skin sweatiness) and heart rate variability biofeedback. You ll see demonstrations of each of these biofeedback modalities and volunteers can try them out. You will also be introduced to the methods, concepts and instrumentation needed to use electroencephalographic biofeedback (neurofeedback) safely and effectively. John K. Nash, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist Dr. Nash received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology/biochemistry from Princeton University and a Master s degree from the Institute for Neurological Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His Psychology Ph.D. is from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where his dissertation involved human EEG research on attention and perception. He received National Institutes of Health sponsored postdoctoral training in one of the first Behavioral Medicine training programs in the U.S., at the New Jersey Medical School. He completed his postdoctoral internship at the Clinical Psychology Department, Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He has worked with psychological, emotional and physical problems (most often depression, anxiety, pain, sleep disorders, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders) for over 25 years, using cognitive behavior therapy, family therapy and biofeedback/neurofeedback. Dr. Nash teaches Psychophysiology and Personality Theories at St. Mary s University of Minnesota. He has been president of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research and currently participates on the Advisory Board of the ISNR Research Foundation, which he helped found. Dr. Nash presently operates a clinic, Behavioral Medicine Associates, Inc. in Edina with his wife, Elizabeth Nash, MA, LMFT, AT-R. Creative Arts and the Healing Journey: Visioning Possibilities for Mental Health We are all on a healing journey and can use the creative arts to support and deepen our process along the way. Join us in this session to learn how to access the inner artist and use the creative arts in our daily lives to promote health and wellbeing. The holistic paradigm teaches us that we move along a continuum in relation to balance and harmony regarding all aspects of our health, including mental health. We have discovered the inseparability of mind-body-spirit through our own lived experience and breakthroughs in the new science. Together we can vision possibilities for a holistic view of mental health. Janet Marinelli, M.S. works as Assistant Professor in the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Program at St. Catherine University where she teaches courses in Foundations of Holistic Health and Wellness, Energy Healing, Spiritual Wellness, and Creative Arts and the Healing Journey. In l984 Janet led the development of the first certificate program in holistic health at St. Catherine University and continues to look towards the leading edge in health, healing, and transformative learning. Janet also enjoys a private practice in transpersonal bodywork.
5 Yoga Therapy for Mental Health & Well-being Yoga is a holistic practice that provides benefits on all dimensions of being muscular skeletal, physiological, psychoemotional and spiritual. The word Yoga means union or to link, acknowledging that everything is connected. The condition of our body affects our state of mind and vice versa. Our thoughts, mood, behavior and physical health all influence each other and impact our relationships to other people and to our environment. Come to this presentation and learn how we can positively affect change in all dimensions of our being through the ancient practice of Yoga. Specifically, you will learn and experience how the tools of Yoga - movement with breath, breathing practices, mantra, chanting, meditation, visualization, inquiry, self-reflection and intention - can be applied therapeutically to heal depression, anxiety and enhance overall health and well-being. All Yoga practices will be done standing or in a chair. You will leave the presentation feeling relaxed and energized with some practical tools to enhance the quality of your life. Michele Hoffman, RYT, CYT, has been a Yoga practitioner for 25 years and she has been teaching Yoga for 15 years. Michele specializes in making Yoga accessible to people of all ages, sizes and abilities. She is employed at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Red Wing as a Yoga Therapist where she offers one-on-one yoga therapy sessions and therapeutic yoga classes for people with chronic health conditions such as back pain, fibromyalgia, sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, depression and anxiety. Michele also works in the Mayo Clinic Hospice program helping patients manage, pain, anxiety, and shortness of breath at the end of life through yoga therapy and healing touch. Michele is the owner of Bluff Country Yoga in Red Wing, where she specializes in Yoga for people over the age of 40. In addition to small group Yoga classes, she also facilitates yoga workshops and restorative yoga retreats. Balance your Minds Energy with Qigong Spring Forest Qigong is a simple, effective and easy to learn method which can help you relieve physical pain, stress, depression and many other health issues. By learning to balance the energy in your body you will enhance your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Qigong exercises combine gentle movements, breathing, visualization/mind focus and sound to help you increase your self-awareness, build internal energy and balance your energy. In this session, you will learn about qigong and how it can help you stimulate your body s natural healing abilities. You will learn simple techniques and exercises designed to help you improve your memory, mental clarity and thinking. Experience how qigong can help you feel more peaceful, relaxed and balanced. Barb Palmer loves helping others to empower themselves using Spring Forest Qigong techniques, so they may experience balance, joy and health. She works at the SFQ Center and is a Certified Level One and Level Two Instructor and Master Healer. Barb volunteers at Pathways, a nonprofit Health Crisis Resource Center in Minneapolis, where she teaches SFQ, guides practice groups and gives individual healing sessions, since Barb teaches Intro to Qigong at Anoka Ramsey Community College. She is a meditation leader and healer at SFQ conferences, events and meetings and was the Presentation Services Coordinator for the Guild Reach Out Program.
