2 Clinical Soundness Dr. Janice Foy earned her BA & MA in Music, with Distinction, from California State University, Northridge and a Ph.D. in music from UCLA, where she specialized in Ethnomusicology. As founding Director of Bravo! L.A., an umbrella organization for her ensemble projects, Dr. Foy offers a treasure trove of string music for the Los Angeles area in a multitude of styles for all of life's occasions. A cellist & pianist, Dr. Janice Foy shares her gifts through performance, research & teaching.

4 Animal-Assisted Pet Therapy Animal-assisted therapy utilizes trained animals and handlers to achieve specific physical, social, cognitive, and emotional goals with patients.

5 Music Therapy Music therapy is a technique of complementary medicine that uses music prescribed in a skilled manner to relax, reduce stress, or improve mood.

6 Art Therapy Art therapy, sometimes called creative arts therapy or expressive arts therapy, encourages people to express and understand emotions through artistic expression and the creative process.

7 Pioneering Literature and Game Therapy The use of poems, short stories, and novels to be read to patients or games such as chess, checkers, or cards to be played with patients.

8 Why do it? Pet Therapy? Studies have shown that physical contact with a pet can lower high blood pressure and cause the release of endorphins to be discharged (chemicals in the body that suppress the response to pain). Patient rehabilitation can be encouraged by such activities as walking or running with a dog, or throwing objects for the animal to retrieve.

9 Why do it? Pet Therapy? Fine motor skills may be developed by petting, grooming, or feeding the animal. Patient communication is encouraged by the response of the animal to either verbal or physical commands. Activities such as writing or talking about the therapy animals or past pets also develop cognitive skills and communication. Creative inclusion of an animal in the life or therapy of a patient can make a major difference in the patient's comfort, progress, and recovery.

10 Why do it? Music Therapy? Brain function physically changes in response to music. The rhythm can guide the body into breathing in slower, deeper patterns that have a calming effect. Heart rate and blood pressure are also responsive to the types of music that are listened to. The rate of the heartbeat tends to rise or fall depending on the volume and speed of the auditory stimulus.

11 Why do it? Music Therapy? Music can also relieve muscle tension and improve motor skills. Levels of endorphins, natural pain relievers, are increased while listening to music, and levels of stress hormones are decreased. Depending on the type and style of sound, music can either sharpen mental acuity or assist in relaxation. This effect may also be partially due to increased concentration that many people have while listening to music.

A 1993 study at Michigan State University showed that even 15 minutes of exposure to music could increase interleukin-1 levels, a consequence which also heightens immunity. Art can be attributed to stimulating memories reminiscent of the past (family, vacations, and life).

13 Why do it? Art Therapy? Involvement in the art enhances motor and cognitive function as well as communication as the patient expresses their vision and direction of the art work. All therapies serve as a form of distraction from the pain, anxiety, stress, and monotony all to often associated with the hospital environment and atmosphere.
