18 COLD TRIPS TO SHETLAND Pyro founder Palmar Bjørnøy was a Norwegian ship s engineer, resistance fighter and businessman, best known in Norway as a member of the Shetland gang fighting the German occupiers in the Second World War. He was awarded the War Cross, Norway s highest gallantry decoration, for his resistance work. His service as a marine engineer began on the fishing vessels first used by the Shetland gang, and from the spring of 1943 on modern anti-submarine destroyers acquired by the Norwegian Navy. With 54 trips across the North Sea, Bjørnøy was the member of the gang who took part in the largest numberof these Shetland Bus voyages to and from the UK. He was described as the right-hand man of leader Shetland Larsen. He remained with the Norwegian Navy until 1949, and after demobilisation founded Pyro in 1951 in his home community of Gamlem inharam local authority on the west Norwegian coast.
