1 First Aid (12hr Paediatric) This course is designed for those working or volunteering in the childcare sector from child-minders to nursery and crèche workers. The training meets the national minimum standards for regulated childcare. Over 12 hours, candidates will receive a high level of training, to enable them to deal with first aid emergencies affecting babies and children. A certificate is issued which is valid for 3 years. Food Hygiene The course is delivered in a classroom environment with group work and practical exercises. Workbooks are provided and candidates are encouraged to make additional notes. Completion of the course is subject to a formal examination at the end of the day. Successful candidates will receive a certificate from the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance. For good practice candidates should attend this course every three years. Child Protection Awareness This course is for new childcare workers who have no prior knowledge or experience of child protection and safeguarding. These candidates will be expected to attend the full Child Protection course within 12 months in order to receive accreditation. Child Protection This course aims to provide delegates with a detailed understanding of Child Protection, particularly in relation to the systems that exist to safeguard children and their role within these systems. Training at Level 2/3 is targeted at staff with specific responsibility for safeguarding children. All staff undertaking training at Level 2/3 should demonstrate the knowledge acquired at Level 1. Delegates will gain a clear and detailed understanding of the systems that exist to safeguard children and their role within these systems. In addition, training at this level will also equip delegates with an understanding of legislation and guidance, as well as local procedures. For good practice candidates should attend this course at least every three years, or more frequently as required. Health and Safety/fire safety/risk assessment Participants will have a greater understanding of health, safety and environmental issues within the work place and their role in recognising, preventing and recording risk, hazards and accidents. Update your knowledge of current legislation, how to assess and reduce the risks of fire and what you should do in the event of a fire. Ability to conduct risk assessments appropriate to the child care setting, familiarity with the relevant health and safety legislation and highlights the risks associated with the working environment and client group. Beach Discovery This course aims to give a lively and informative day on the beach to gain knowledge of this fascinating habitat. Will give participants knowledge of the marine ecosystem, and increase skills in identifying seashore plants and animals. Inspire participants to use the beach as a learning resource. (Please remember to bring: Sun cream, warm layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, pen/paper and a packed lunch/drink). Creating an Inviting and playful environment This course is designed for Early Years staff to support them to develop creative and playful environments, (whether you have access to a permanent space or need to create a play space quickly in an area that is used by other members of the community at other times). Looking at effective play and how a space can enable the exploration of emotions and ideas by a child. Understand how attitudes, atmosphere, permission, supervision and intervention styles impact on play environments. Analysing different play spaces; reflecting on your own 1
2 play experiences in different spaces. Promoting opportunities for challenge in play spaces and striking a balance between safety and challenge; looking at the difference between risk assessment, and a risk benefit analysis. The Adult s role in Children s Play Working through practice base scenarios, this interactive training course will outline the multi-faceted role of the adult in children s play. It will consider how adults can effectively support children in play by carefully considering their verbal and non-verbal communication. It will introduce the notion of the play cycle and practitioners will develop skills in reading the cues and signals that enable them to participate in children s selfdirected activities as co-operative play partners. Reflecting on practitioner experiences, the course will consider how vest to meet the challenge of balancing the various roles it is necessary to undertake as an early years professional, whilst at the same time ensuring quality play provision. Promoting Welsh Language in Playgroups This course will give you the opportunity to learn games and songs that use welsh, also, simple welsh words and phrases to use in child care settings. Under 5 s emotional health and wellbeing This course introduces a range of tools and activities to help promote and encourage emotional literacy and self-esteem in the under 5s. This is based on the Happy Suns and Sad Sheep pack. Behaviour Management for 4+ This course has been designed to encourage staff to look for more creative ways of managing or resolving challenging situations or behaviour. The course content will include: Challenging behaviour as a communication tool, the differences between emotional, aggression and violence. The personal and environmental factors that influence challenging behaviour. Understand and be able to read body language. How to work as a team to objectively observe behaviour to ensure individual interventions are consistently applied to best suit the individual. Implementing positive behaviour management techniques to de-escalate challenging incidents, praise, reward and risk assessment and recording. Under 11 s anti-bullying This course introduces a range of tools and activities to help promote and encourage emotional literacy and self-esteem in the under 11s. Bereavement Training This course provides and introduction to the concept of loss, bereavement and grief and is suitable for both adults and children s services, to provide front line care staff with relevant information guidance and support to promote professional delivery of care services, when faced with the loss of a child or adult. The course will cover the following: What is loss? Culture and ethics. Religion. 2
3 Communication, planning, stages of bereavement. Cycle of grief. Coping strategies for families and staff and knowing where to get additional support. Play for children with special or additional needs Beginning with practitioner s own reflections, this interactive training course will consider the meaning of inclusive practice and its place within play policy. Practitioners will have the opportunity to share their experiences of working with difference and diversity and the challenges they face in meeting wide ranging needs. Difference and diversity will be considered from the perspective of culture, disability, sickness and emotional trauma. The characteristics and potential implications of some types of impairment on children s play and development will be highlighted (e.g. ADHD, ASD, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome). Practitioners will work through some hypothetical scenarios and reflect on how they can use theory and research evidence to develop effective evidence based play practice. Leadership and Management Participants of this course will consider their role as a manager and what is viewed as strengths and weaknesses and positives and negatives of how they are managed. Explore the boundaries of a manager. Try out some positive communication tools to support their team to work in an efficient and effective manner. Explore the needs of their team. Look at models of leadership and consider their benefits and disadvantages, unpick any barriers that might exist to good leadership. Promoting Positive relationships between Parents and Childcare Providers This course is designed to support staff to develop better relationships with both parents and prospective parents. Its aim is to specifically touch on attitudes of staff and the difference this can make to customer services and the experience that parents have with current and potential Nurseries. Course content will cover: Understanding the importance of engaging parents and carers in children s education. Analyse the qualities of a childcare worker that reassures and instills confidence in parents. Develop their appreciation of the concerns of parents and the importance of demonstrating their understanding and receptiveness. Review the benefits to children of a happy relationship between the nursery and parents. Honestly and openly look at the difficulties and challenges for both the nursery staff and the parents concerned in achieving good communication and develop a realistic plan of how these barriers can be overcome. Christmas Craft and Easter Craft Exciting seasonal craft designed to support parents and their children to focus on communication, language, literacy and play. Positive Behaviour Management in Early Years The training places the emphasis on preserving and developing positive relationships between those who exhibit challenging behaviour and those who work with them. The course aims to: Establish a common value base for work with challenging behaviour. Understand what underpins challenging behaviour. Place challenging behaviour within the context of life and experience. 3
4 Understand the environment and individual and how they can contribute to challenging behaviour. Identify environmental and individual changes that can assist in the management of challenging behaviour. Understand the psychological and physiological impact of challenging behaviour on all involved. Equip staff with a range of de-escalation techniques proven to be successful in managing challenging behaviour. Understand the aftermath of challenging behaviour and the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment for all. Placing the behaviour in context with the development of the child. Positive, non-physical diffusion techniques for diffusing challenging behaviour. The legal and statutory requirements for working in this area. Manual Handling Designed especially for staff working with children in various settings where moving and picking up equipment and children is part of the daily routine. The course contains definitions on manual handling, the types of injuries you can receive due to incorrect practice, and basic anatomy of the spine and muscles within the body. Factors which contribute to safer handling and good base movement are also covered. Speech and Language This course will increase your knowledge and teach practical techniques, benefitting all children in your care. Learn about the difference between speech and language skills; the stages of speech and language development; when to be concerned about a child s development; effective techniques to promote interaction and language development and how to obtain advice for a child with an identified need. Cooking Counts This hands on training will increase confidence to teach basic cooking skills. Also, discuss how cooking can support the whole curriculum (particularly literacy and numeracy), demonstrate how health and well-being messages can be reinforced by cooking. Discuss how to work safety and hygienically and make practical sessions manageable and fun. Playwork in childcare settings Participants will gain an understanding of play that is child-led, motivated and directed. Explore the worker s role in a play setting and the barriers that can prevent play from happening. Consider what children and parents expect from child care and how to promote play within this. Consider how to create an environment that promotes play. Baby Sign This course has fantastic benefits for pre-verbal babies and also children with disabilities. In this interactive course, participants will discuss what baby sign is, the benefit to babies, how to get started and what to expect. Delegates will discuss what signs would be useful in their settings as well as participate in a sing and sign workshop. Encouraging Play and Exploration This interactive training course will outline the way in which play develops from birth to two years. It will highlight the importance of early experience and the foundation for healthy development. The course will consider key developmental milestones from birth to two years including infant perception and innate skills and 4
5 reflexes. It will highlight the invaluable role of play in supporting this early development across domains. Drawing on practitioner experiences, we will consider a range of activities suited to this age group. We will also reflect on the challenges of our work with young children and how these might be overcome. Supervision and Appraisal This course explains the procedures for staff supervision and staff appraisal development. By the end of the course participants will know how to conduct supervision and appraisal, why it is needed, how to record and use the information gathered. The importance of children s participation in play This course will give participants: The opportunity to try out a range of methods, games and activities designed for under 11s. To explore ideas, and develop and express their opinions. Consider the barriers that exist when giving young children a say and how to avoid them. The theory, political context and relevance of participation to your role. Reflection on your own practice and the chance to share ideas with other professionals. Jambori Jambori is Music and Movement sessions for pre-school children. Through Nursery Rhymes, Action Songs, musical instruments, props and games children develop their speaking and listening skills, co-ordination, creativity and social skills. Jambori has been adapted to complement the Foundation Phase curriculum used to teach children aged 3-7 throughout Wales. Children s faces light up as they see the five little speckled frogs jump off the log, meet Incy Wincy and his BIG brother and look round the room for the five little monkeys who want to jump on the bed. Most of the props used are unique to Jambori and have been designed and created especially to help children to visualise the words they are singing. Welsh and English are used throughout the sessions and emphasis is placed on numbers, colours, etc. Jambori are aware that adults enjoyment is important also and we always try to use modern, catchy songs to appeal to the whole audience. Infection Controls This course aims to provide participants with an overview of infection control measure to prevent the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents. The course is delivered using interactive training sessions with taught elements, supported by worksheets, visual aids, group exercises, case studies and practical hand hygiene activities. The course will provide the opportunity for participants to discuss the most common infections present in their workplace and discuss the importance of effective hand hygiene, environmental hygiene and the use of PPE to minimise risk and promote best practice at all times. The course will cover what is infection control, policy and procedure, legislation, PPE, at risk groups, bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi, the chain of infection, modes of transmission, sharps injury, personal hygiene, spillages and communicable diseases. Playing in the Outdoors The opportunity to play outdoors is an important element of provision for young children, and is included in policy relating to early years care and education. In this interactive training course, we will explore the challenges practitioners face in providing for play in the outdoors. Practitioners will share their experiences of outdoor play, including the way in which they use the outdoors and factors that influence this. We will consider the reasons why outdoor play is important, applying this knowledge to planning and practice. Practitioners will learn how a flexible approach based on the fundamental principles as to the benefits of the natural environment, can enhance children s learning and development as well as developing their own philosophy of professional early years practice. 5
