3 BUS250-3 Business Ethics BUS252-4 Operations Management INT200-3 International Business Course Descriptions Semester 1 Applied Accounting (ACC107) (4 credits) This course enables the student to begin measuring and evaluating an organizations financial activities. The course will permit the student to employ Generally Accepted Accounting Principles when preparing and maintaining the accounting records of a service or merchandising business. Introduction to Business (BUS100) (4 credits) This course is an introductory survey of modern Canadian business. The student will study various forms of business ownership and organization and will be introduced to the basic management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling as they relate to the various areas of business. Business Computer Applications (BUS140) (3 credits) Students are introduced to computerized applications used by small to medium-sized businesses in their operation. Specifically, the student will gain practical hands-on experience in using software applications for word-processing, the preparation of spreadsheets, the creation of information databases and for preparing business presentations. The Microsoft Office Suite of software applications is the most prevalent software used businesses in their operations and is the software that the student will utilize in this course. Communications I (CMM115) (3 credits) The focus of this course is paragraph writing. Students will produce effective, college-level expository/response paragraphs by developing analytical skills to select and properly integrate electronic and other research materials. Writing components such as grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, editing, and referencing are included. Introduction to Marketing (MKT101) (3 credits) This introductory course examines what is involved in the practice and management of marketing. Students will explore the marketing process of, planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods and services. Mathematics of Finance (MTH114) (4 credits) A study of simple and compound interest, dated values and equations of equivalence, simple and general annuities due, deferred annuities, amortization, sinking funds, depletion, perpetuities, capitalization and comparison of assets. Global Citizenship (GEN100) (3 credits) The world we are living in is one in which local, national and international issues are interwoven, and the need for us to understand the impact these issues can have on our lives has never been greater! Using a socio-cultural, political and environmental lens, students will view how the world is changing and how to become active agents of change from the local to international level. Important issues such as social injustice, poverty, environmental protection, resource scarcity, sustainability, and health will be addressed. Global citizenship is an opportunity to `Be the Change`. This course meets the Civic Life and Social and Cultural Understanding General Education themes. Semester 2 Managerial Accounting (ACC123) (4 credits) Managerial accounting is concerned with providing information to managers who are inside an organization. Students will study the managerial accounting concepts used by managers to direct and

4 control the operations of a small business. Business Law (BUS127) (3 credits) This course is designed to introduce students to the legal fundamentals for Canadian Business. The course will focus on the types of legal issues that students will encounter most frequently when they enter the business world. An understanding of the relationships created when conducting business and the rights, responsibilities and obligations that legally apply to these relationships are examined in this course. Computerized Financial Management Applications (BUS142) (4 credits) This course introduces the student to Computerized Financial Management Applications used by managers in the daily strategic decision-making process. Students will apply their financial accounting knowledge by utilizing Computerized Accounting Systems to generate financial data. The student will also be introduced to the use of spreadsheet software in the preparation of financial analysis of accounting data. Marketing for Managers (BUS145) (3 credits) Marketing managers develop the firm`s marketing strategy in detail. Students will learn the process of working with their subordinates of estimating the demand for products and services, identifying potential markets, developing pricing strategies and monitoring trends that indicate the need for new products. Business Communication (CMM215) (3 credits) This course provides employment-related theory and practice in those written and oral reporting skills typical of a modern business or institution. The principles of writing are taught through the writing process. Organizational Behaviour (BUS103) (4 credits) This is an introductory course which increases the student`s understanding of people as individuals and as members of groups. Such topics as motivation, individual behaviour in groups, group dynamics, leadership, and participative management are explored using small group discussions, films, case studies, and role plays. What in the World is Going On? (GAS103) (3 credits) This course will give you the opportunity to build a strong awareness of current global issues. You will explore various media such as radio, TV, internet, newspaper, and magazines. Through discussions, debates, and presentations, students will focus on the main international headlines. Students will discover and develop a view and understanding of the impact of events related to music, entertainment, fashion, sports, politics, economics, world issues, and human-interest stories. Music and Pop Culture (GAS109) (3 credits) This course will give students the opportunity to think creatively and critically about the influence of popular music. Students will explore different music genres (rock, metal, hip hop and rap), their development and social significance. Students may explore music in film, commercials, war and protest, social and civil rights movements, and the contributions of specific artists to contemporary culture. The ways in which popular music has contributed to the current culture and, in turn, how culture has shaped popular music will be examined. Your Two Cents (GAS116) (3 credits) No matter one s lifestyle, income or background, each person has experienced and developed practices to how we relate to money. This course explores our relationship and personal understanding with money, and its place and value in our culture and individual lives. Student Selected General Education (GEN110) (3 credits) For Transfer Credit Purposes only. Personal and Academic Success Strategies (HDG122) (3 credits) This course will prepare you for the rigors of academic life and enable you to develop a personal profile for

5 college and career success. The main focus of this course will include accepting personal responsibility, discovering self-motivation, mastering self-management, employing interdependence, gaining self-awareness, adopting lifelong learning and developing emotional intelligence. In addition, you will develop and produce a `Personal Profile` that will identify your personal learning style, communication style, and personality style to enable you to achieve success in learning about, understanding, and choosing the courses and careers that will lead to personal and professional satisfaction. Introduction to Aboriginal Peoples of Canada (SSC102) (3 credits) This course will provide the participants with an introduction to the history and cultural survival of Canada`s Aboriginal people. Aboriginal worldview will be identified and discussed in both historical and modern perspectives. Students will review colonization, government policies and legislation, which provide a foundation for understanding modern Aboriginal life in Canada. Semester 3 Small Business Entrepreneurship (BUS216) (3 credits) Entrepreneurship incorporates the theory and practice related to setting up and managing small firms. This course is intended to tie together subject material in the business program and lead small business people and entrepreneurs in a logical and sequential way through the steps in developing a business plan. Human Resource Management (BUS217) (4 credits) Human Resource Management refers to the management of people in organizations. Major topics include: recruitment and placement, training and development, compensation, protection, motivation, appraisal, career management, employee health and safety and labour management relations. Small Business Management (BUS228) (4 credits) This course introduces the student to the study of contemporary management skills required to manage small businesses. Students will examine the role of management, identify effective management, and explore techniques aimed at improving management skills in an ever-changing business environment. Business and the Environment (BUS236) (3 credits) An introduction of ways in which business has and is responding to environmental and business issues, business and sustainable development and issues of corporate business greening. Macroeconomics (ECN104) (3 credits) The primary objective of this course will be to study the economy of Canada and the immediate problems of our society, such as inflation, unemployment, environmental pollution, etc., and the relationship of these. Man's and society's unlimited wants and scarce resources will also be studied as well as the relationship of the Canadian economy with other countries' economies and the world situation. Personal Selling and Influences (MKT212) (4 credits) This course focuses on the development of interpersonal skills. Students will explore leadership skills, selling techniques and the ability to influence the actions of others. Semester 4 Business Finance (BUS206) (4 credits) Students will acquire the knowledge used to understand the financial management of a small business. Students will be able to identify the financial business concepts required to successfully manage and analyze the on going operations of a small business. Small Business Simulation (BUS232) (4 credits) Students will utilize the knowledge relating to business activities gained through the curriculum. Students will apply their business knowledge in a simulated business environment to test their ability as a business owner/manager.

6 Business Ethics (BUS250) (3 credits) This course encourages students to consider ethics in two ways. First, on a personal level and second, examine business ethics and the highly complex ethical challenges which businesses and thus individual employees face. Operations Management (BUS252) (4 credits) This subject is a basic grounding in the field of operations management. Students will be able to apply various problem solving techniques in the analysis of practical operations management situations. International Business (INT200) (3 credits) This course explores the opportunities and challenges presented in the global market place. Issues such as culture, legal, economics and finance are studied and analyzed with regards to their potential impact on the global business plan.
