2 CERTIFICATIONS Successful graduates of this program will achieve a Certificate in International Freight Forwarding from the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA). The certificate is nationally recognized within the international transportation and international trade logistics industries. Successful graduates of this program will also achieve a Certificate of Recognition in Introductory Dispatch and Operations Software from Universal Freight Operating System (UFOS). The certificate is evidence that students are prepared to use the UFOS transportation management system, which is used by hundreds of supply chain organizations across North America. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS High School Graduation Diploma or Mature Student Status (18 years of age and academic achievement test passed). In addition, an entrance examination must be successfully passed. Accreditation Policy: Like all post-secondary institutions in Ontario, trios College reserves the right to accept or deny advanced standing into its programs. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Diploma: trios diplomas will be granted only to students who successfully complete all courses in the program with a passing grade of 60% (or a grade of complete where applicable). As well, students must meet the minimum Standards of Satisfactory Scholastic Progress as set out in our Student Handbook. For programs that include an internship, all internship hours must be completed and a final grade of Pass must be achieved for the internship. Diploma with Honours: Where an overall average of 90% is maintained and a student meets all standards related to contact hours, the student is eligible for "Honours" status upon graduation and such status will be recorded on his/her Diploma and Official Transcript. The trios Supply Chain & Logistics program provides students with well-rounded exposure to the international supply chain and the skills needed to be successful in the industry. Students will develop general proficiencies appropriate for a wide range of careers in supply chain and logistics. Graduates will have learned the essential skills needed to thrive in a role that requires attention to detail, analytical thinking and problem solving. Additional focus is given to Microsoft Office Applications that are used in today's offices. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Supply Chain and Logistics program will qualify grads to pursue positions such as Logistics Coordinator, Dispatcher, Warehouse Associate Supervisor, Purchasing Agent, Billing Agent, Materials Management Analyst, Scheduler, Loss Prevention Agent, Cargo and Freight Agent, Customs Broker and more. Note: Some career and education options may require advanced degrees, further training or experience. 3 CAREER MANAGEMENT Our Career Management program introduces students to the strategies and components of an effective job search, including self-marketing and awareness, skills inventory, job search tools and the job market. The Career Management course is delivered by our on-campus Career Services Team who is there throughout the job search to assist and mentor students towards achieving their ultimate goal of employment in their field of study. Our Team of Career Services Professionals maintain relationships in their communities with key employers and organizations that recognize the value trios graduates have to offer. The skills learned throughout Career Management at trios will continue to serve students in their job search as they navigate their new careers. THE trios LEARNING PROCESS Delivering high quality career training since 1994, trios College has developed a unique, Instructor-led learning system that ensures success for our students. It starts with proper assessment and selection of a program that fits each student's career goals. Our classes feature a stimulating learning environment led by experienced instructors who have industry experience. We regularly offer instructor-training programs for our faculty to ensure that they have the skills to transfer knowledge to our students. The Instructors bring real-world problems into the classroom to demonstrate the application of technology and learning. Students receive personalized coaching throughout their program by our Instructors, Campus Director and Employment Specialists, all of whom are available to assist in understanding our curriculum as well as employment and career related issues. MICROSOFT WORD This course takes you beyond the basics to cover introductory and intermediate level word processing concepts and techniques using Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to produce professional business documents. Emphasis will be placed on intermediate word processing techniques including paragraph and page formatting options; working with tabs and indents; using the Find and Replace features; using the Spell-check, Grammar check, Thesaurus and other built-in correction tools; multi-column texts, numbered and bulleted paragraphs; Headers, Footers and page numbering. MICROSOFT EXCEL The main objective of this courseware is to introduce you to the basic commands, functions, and capabilities of Microsoft Office Excel. It is designed for computer users who are new to spreadsheets, or who only plan to use Excel occasionally. This course will provide you with the skills to create Workbooks using: "what if" analysis; utilizing multiple sheets and learning the basic concepts of Formulas and Functions. MICROSOFT OUTLOOK is a crucial tool in today s business environment. Outlook is a potent instrument, with a variety of useful components. Students can expect to cover such information as composing, formatting as well as inserting attachments. As well, more advanced manipulation topics and customizations are addressed, such as filtering mail, creating folders, templates and rule wizard applications. In addition to components, Outlook s Calendar and Task s features can be integrated for sharing of information between users. MICROSOFT POWERPOINT Today s worker needs to understand how to prepare concise dynamic presentations. In the PowerPoint course students will learn techniques and concepts that will allow them to do this. This course will take a hands-on approach to creating computer slide presentations using PowerPoint. Areas of study will include: presentation guidelines, building your presentations, creating outlines, formatting slides, creating templates, animation, adding charts, clipart and special SC&L
4 effects. Students will work with embedded objects and multiple presentations. Different methods of presenting output will be discussed. By the end of the course, each student will complete and present his/her own PowerPoint presentation. BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS This course will help the student develop the skills necessary to function in writing in the modern business setting. There will be a review of Grammar, Sentence Structure, and Punctuation as they apply to Business Communication. Formats for a variety of written and verbal business communications techniques will be taught. Students will complete various exercises with the emphasis on improving their communication skills, and apply them to writing of letters, memoranda, newsletters and reports. Students will also complete a variety of public speaking exercises to enhance verbal and nonverbal skills. OFFICE PROCEDURES This course helps the student obtain necessary practical office administration skills, attitudes, and knowledge important in today s complex and ever changing office environment. Topics covered include time and stress management, productivity, math, decision making and leadership, teamwork, analytical thinking, records management, office mail, technology, meetings and reporting. INTRODUCTION TO LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORTATION This course introduces students to a definition of Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation. Topics include a general overview of the career paths available, networking/professional training opportunities, and how the changing global environment impacts the forward and reverse flows of goods and services. Students will also learn about the financial impact of logistics costs on an organization and the importance of information technology and transportation along the supply chain in order to make strong business decisions. INTRODUCTION TO PURCHASING This course introduces students to the concepts of Total Cost of Ownership for products and services, as well as an introduction to Supplier Relationship Management. Topics include Economies of scale, the preparation of documents for RFI and RFP processes, as well as the various costs involved in purchase decisions (acquisition, ownership, obsolescence, etc.). Students will demonstrate the different approaches to a transactional supplier relationship as compared to a partner based business agreement. INTRODUCTION TO CONTRACT LAW AND ADMINISTRATION This course provides a study of the Canadian legal system and its effect on business and business organizations. Topics include business law, contracts and sales, torts, consumer protection issues, employment issues, the regulation of business organizations, finance and debtor and creditor law. On completion the student will know about the various important areas of law impacting business and be able to apply the same in day to day decision making. SECURITY, COMPLIANCE AND LOSS PREVENTION This course identifies common causes of asset loss. Topics include planning, monitoring and controlling assets, internal and external to the company. Students will learn how to prevent loss and damage as well as how to record losses for claim recovery from suppliers, insurance companies or other sources. This course also involves creating a general awareness to ethical issues as well as cover specific topics and many examples of business managers violating ethical rules and those that have met and have exceeded such standards. Topics include values, principles, responsibility, governance and ethics related to various business disciplines. This course will also allow the opportunity for students to interact and understand the relevance of ethics on business and how decision making is impacted by the same SC&L
5 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS This course introduces students to what business involves in today s environment. Topics include the business environment, managing a new or existing business, employees and the various functions of business. Students will have the opportunity to prepare a business plan encompassing the various areas of business including the business functions, organizational structure, while incorporating important ethical concepts in business. CUSTOMER SERVICE Customer service is a key factor in differentiating a business in current climate conditions. This course will offer students the opportunity to learn how to provide exceptional customer service, tips and tricks of wowing the customer experience, turning problems into opportunities and the confidence in handling complex customer issues. An introduction to a computerized customer relationship management system will be provided. PROFESSIONAL PURCHASING This course builds on Introduction to Purchasing and involves students in understanding the function or Purchasing in today s business environment. Topics include ABC vendor analysis and rating, Forward Buying, Life Cycle costing, Quality, etc. INTRODUCTION TO OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT This course is concerned with the design of systems to produce goods and services and the operation of those systems. It discusses relationships within the company environment, particularly with marketing and product design. Topics covered include facilities planning, total quality management (TQM), cost analysis, project planning, and operations resource management. NEGOTIATIONS AND SUPPLIER MANAGEMENT This course gives students experience and tools to work in a Purchasing environment. Topics include types of supplier relationships, methods of negotiation and factors involved in developing lasting supplier relationships. Students will know which supplier relationships to nurture and which to minimize their time managing. INVENTORY CONTROL & MATERIALS MANAGEMENT This course introduces students to methods for controlling inventory while developing decisionmaking skills for re-buying. Students learn essential vocabulary and skills for identifying and applying the basic principles of inventory management. Basic methods of planning and controlling inventory in manufacturing, institutional, distribution and retail environments are covered. The questions of what to stock are addressed through an examination of current and evolving technologies of inventory management. INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORTATION AND TRADE This course builds on Introduction to Transportation and involves students in understanding how to minimize the costs involved in acquiring materials as well as delivering to customers. This course also introduces students to the importance of time management and capacity planning. Topics include packaging, lane saturation, partnering and reverse logistics, as well as how to effectively schedule resources (people, trucks, etc.) as well as communication skills for dispatching service providers to customer sites. Students will learn to make transportation related decisions that add value to the customers and reduce the overall operating costs for the business. ESSENTIALS OF FREIGHT FORWARDING This course focuses on international transportation and trade. Topics include understanding freight forwarding, international payments and terms of trade. Almost all supply chains are global in scope and very few companies can navigate the international intricacies on their own. Students will learn the value of partner selection to optimize the supply chain. CUSTOMS ISSUES AND PROCEDURES This course introduces students to the regulatory requirements of an import or export business. Topics include government regulations, security issues, and international trade requirements. Students will prepare documentation that would accompany goods crossing the border for inbound and outbound shipments SC&L
