2 WELCOME NOTES MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRESIDENT At UCSI University, we give our students the edge they need to make a difference in their roles as doctors, nurses, and optometrists. On top of world-class knowledge, we instill in them a sense of deep care and reverence for the responsibilities they have towards their patients. Like all experienced healthcare professionals, we know that there is no room for error when it comes to saving lives. Through our international collaborations with leading medical universities such as Harvard in the US, University Medical Centre of Groningen in the Netherlands, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in the UK, and Deakin University in Australia, our students gain a competitive edge not just locally, but internationally as well. This sees our graduates chart their careers and impact lives in hospitals all around the world, including the US, Canada, Australia and Singapore. With this, I welcome you to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Your studies here will be challenging. They will also be satisfying. All these stand out for various reasons; our medicine programme maximises the students clinical hours and hospital attachments, our nursing graduates have a 100% employment rate within the first six months after graduation, our MSc (Anti-Aging, Regenerative Medicine and Medical Aesthetic) is the first of its kind in the country and the School of Optometry comes with an in-house, fully-equipped optometry retail centre. In addition to our students outstanding aptitudes many are top scorers they are also praised for their attitudes. Employers and patients often highlight to us the professionalism and care exemplified by our graduates. This is no result of chance. At UCSI, we believe that competence and compassion can be cultivated and our students have proven us right. They have organised numerous events, working with NGOs including Hospis Malaysia, the Family and Reproductive Health Association Malaysia and the Pink Triangle Foundation. Many of the Faculty members have years of experience in medicine, nursing or optometry. Thus, you will work ferociously hard. This is good. More than knowledge, you will find grit a passion and perseverance for long-term goals. 3 Faculty of MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES Intellect. Research. Excellence. At UCSI University s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, patient care and the pursuit of knowledge go hand in hand. From community healthcare events to research at Harvard, we empower our students to make a difference in the lives of their patients, now and in the future. At UCSI University s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FOMHS), the standard of our graduates speaks for us. Not only do our students consist of the best and the brightest they are also among the kindest and most professional. We insist on these qualities because our experience shows that among patients and even their peers, competent and compassionate doctors, nurses, and optometrists stand out. Graduates must be experts in their fields and possess well-developed clinical and interpersonal skills. And when it comes to a life-or-death situation, their decisions must be timely and their actions assured. Hands-on and problem-based learning sums up the environment at the Faculty. Instead of mere rote learning, students are groomed to think and base their actions on practices backed by scientific research. This means our graduates doctors, nurses and optometrists alike do not blindly follow instructions. They consider and question every instruction to ensure the health of the patient is placed above all else even tradition. Each curriculum is designed to provide students with as much hands-on experience as possible. Medical and nursing students spend many hours attached to hospitals where they are given the opportunity to serve patients of various ages and experience specialisation in different clinical settings. They also organise charity and community events organ donation drives, breast cancer awareness initiatives and fundraisers to connect and serve both rural and city folks. UCSI s collaboration with a leading optical retailer and in-house optometry centre gives our optometry students an early start in their careers and provide familiarity with the latest optical equipment in the market. DOCTOR OF MEDICINE (MQA/FA 4671; 08/2015) SCHOOL OF ANTI AGING, AESTHETICS & REGENERATIVE MEDICINE MSc (ANTI-AGING, REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND MEDICAL AESTHETIC) (A 10080; 08/2015) SCHOOL OF NURSING MASTER OF NURSING (N/723/7/0117; 08/2019) BACHELOR OF NURSING (HONS) (A 11047; 11/2019) DIPLOMA IN NURSING (A 11048; 11/2019) ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN HEALTHCARE INFORMATICS (N/720/5/0050, 01/2019) ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN PALLIATIVE CARE FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS (N/723/5/0088; 10/2018) ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN TEACHING METHODOLOGY FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS (N/141/5/0020, 01/2019) SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY BACHELOR OF OPTOMETRY (HONS) (N/726/6/0040; 12/2018) Research is another key driver at the Faculty. In addition to investigative components in the curriculum, students are guided by lecturers who are esteemed researchers in their own right. On the international front, the Faculty has hosted and supervised research students from the University Medical Centre of Groningen whose medical programme is ranked third best in the Netherlands and UCSI s fourth year medical students have the option of spending an elective posting there as well. We have also sent a medical student for an intercalated research year at Harvard. This is just a microcosm of the culture of excellence at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. 4 DOCTOR OF MEDICINE (MQA/FA 4671; 11/2015) Accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council and listed by the World Health Organisation, UCSI s Doctor of Medicine stands out for its graduates who excel in terms of medical knowledge and leadership. International collaborations with global institutions such as Harvard, University Medical Centre of Groningen in the Netherlands, and Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in the UK, ensure that our students are able to compete with their global peers. The programme focuses on five areas basic medical services; clinical and therapeutic methods, procedures, and investigations; community health and family medicine; communication skills and professional competence. The course Behavioural Science, Communication Skills, and Personal Professional Development sees medical students organise community health events that enhance their leadership and communication skills. Students who are interested in careers as clinician-scientists will find tremendous support from the Faculty and UCSI. Fourth year students have the option of spending an elective posting at the University Medical Centre of Groningen, whose medical programme is ranked third best in the Netherlands. Students spend the first two years of study in the UCSI Kuala Lumpur campus where they will strengthen their theoretical knowledge. From the third year onwards, they will be based in the UCSI Terengganu Campus. Unlike hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, there are less medical students in Terengganu hospitals and the students have more opportunities to perform medical procedures instead of just watching in a group. This will subsequently ensure a smoother transition from university student to houseman and finally doctor, as the students are exposed to patient interaction early on instead of just during their senior years. TEACHING For the Doctor of Medicine programme, teaching revolves around giving students a head start in their careers. Unlike mere rote learning, the curriculum is designed around four main thrusts - Student-centred Learning, Problem-based Learning, Integrated Learning and Computer-assisted Learning. The first two approaches encourage proactive behaviour and ownership as well as comprehensive understanding instead of mere memorisation. Integrated Learning focuses on early clinical exposure in the form of numerous hospital visits to enhance the students physical examination, communication and physical examination skills. Under Computer-assisted Learning, multimedia tools are incorporated including a computerised multi-purpose laboratory and 3D cyber anatomy software for anatomy dissection sessions. Web streaming symposiums with the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh (UK) are implemented weekly at the Terengganu Campus lecture hall. This series of symposiums deals with advances in various aspects of medicine and streams directly from Edinburgh. Following successful completion of the medical degree, graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). After serving two compulsory housemanship years, they are eligible for full registration in Malaysia, but Malaysian citizens will be required to undertake another two years of compulsory service by the Ministry of Health. 5 BACHELOR OF OPTOMETRY (HONS) (N/726/6/0040; TEACHING UCSI s School of Optometry focuses on a solid curriculum, ample hands-on experience and lecturers who are experienced optometrists themselves. During clinical trainings, students at UCSI learn in a simulated optometric environment, practising on each other before moving on to real patients, under the tutelage of experienced lecturers. This training provides procedural experiences in case history taking, performing eye examinations, employing diagnostic techniques, and applying the necessary communication skills to discuss treatment plans and options with patients. Students also get to practise their business and entrepreneurial skills at the in-house UCSI Optometry Retail Centre. 12/2018) UCSI University s (UCSI) Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) degree is a four-year undergraduate programme conducted at the UCSI Kuala Lumpur campus. In the early years of the optometry degree, students will be taught the basic human sciences. This includes human and ocular anatomy; how the human body, muscles, nerves, eye and other organs are positioned and how they function. In the biochemistry aspect, students will learn about the chemical function of the human body. Upon having a firm grasp of the basics, students will then move on to learning how to use various eye equipments and perform eye examinations. These skills are highly relevant to students who aim to work in the retail aspect of optometry, which involves dispensing spectacles and contact lenses. Students of this degree will be trained in every aspect of ocular health including preventive care, visual therapy and rehabilitation. They will be able to diagnose and manage eye diseases in addition to managing patients with special needs such as low vision and other visual problems. In line with the business and entrepreneurial aspect of an optometry career, UCSI has a purpose-built optometry retail centre and optometry clinic on campus. The UCSI Optometry Retail Centre provides students with first-hand experience in serving patients and conducting different eye tests under the careful guidance of their lecturers who are registered optometrists themselves. Coupled with the latest cutting-edge optometry equipment, these ensure that students are adequately prepared to deliver world-class eye care for their patients. According to the Optical Act 1991, only a person who is registered with the Malaysian Optical Council is allowed to practise Optometry in Malaysia. Optometry Centres need qualified optometrists to prescribe spectacles and contact lenses as well as conduct eye care examinations on the customers. In addition to being a registered health professional, optometrists have the option of being self-employed or a partner of an optometry retail centre. This is ideal for those who have an entrepreneurial attitude as there is no cap to the remuneration from a retail centre it depends on the hard work and initiative of the owner. Optometrists are also in demand in government and private hospitals, manufacturers of ophthalmic products, and as consultants for insurance companies and industrial safety programmes. Besides that, they can also opt for the health officer positions at the Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation office, and community health clinics as well as at the Association for the Blind. A career in academia or research is also an option. Just as surely as it has reshaped the fields of commerce and industry, IT will change the practice of every healthcare provider/professional and healthcare assistant. It is central to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. This sees the pressing need for more healthcare professionals who are trained in Healthcare Informatics. This Advanced Diploma in Healthcare Informatics is designed to equip healthcare and IT professionals with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to ensure that the healthcare sector and ultimately, the patients, gets the best out of IT. This Advanced Diploma in Healthcare Informatics programme intends to prepare healthcare and IT professionals to become health informaticists. Health informaticists can work in a wide variety of health-related fields and settings, including dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, medical research, clinical care and public health in order to influence safe, quality and cost-effective patient care. ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN TEACHING METHODOLOGY FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS (N/141/5/0020, 01/2019) Changing medical technologies and better informed patients make for a healthcare environment that is evolving at a fast pace. It is now more important than ever for the healthcare professionals to be adequately trained to effectively meet the demands of healthcare. Playing a crucial role are healthcare educators. Clinical expertise and paper qualifications alone do not make a healthcare educator. It requires different sets of skills that empower and inspire learners to do their best for the patients. As an educator one must be able to combine clinical expertise with responsibilities related to designing curricula, developing courses / programmes of study, facilitating and mentoring learners, evaluating learning and documenting the outcomes of the educational process. This programme is designed to provide the art and science of healthcare-related pedagogy to groom the best healthcare professionals. This Advanced Diploma in Teaching Methodology for Health Care Professionals intends to prepare healthcare professionals to become qualified teachers for the healthcare industries. They are able to work in public and private institutions of higher learning, hospitals and healthcare facilities. The programme is also useful and relevant to those who are involved in patient teaching, clinical education, continuing and in-service education as well as community health education.
