6 Day 3: Wednesday, August Depart Hotel at 08:45 09:00-09:45 - Meeting with Danish District Heating Association Merkurvej 7, 6000 Kolding, Jutland John Tang Denmark is a world leader in district heating. Danish District Heating Association is a member organization representing 400 district heating companies. These companies account for 98% of the district heating sold in Denmark. The members span from small cooperatively owned companies, supplying a few hundred households, to large municipal utilities, serving several hundred thousand consumers. In Denmark, 1.5 million households are connected to collective district heating networks. Some 60% of the Danish population is thus kept warm by district heating. District heating provides Denmark with many economic advantages, among other things by utilizing energy that would otherwise be wasted. District heating uses many types of fuel and these are often combined within individual district heating networks. Many of the fuels replace imports, improving the security of supply contributing to national and local economies. About 75% of Denmark s district heating is produced in combined heat and power, CHP, plants that generate both heat and electricity simultaneously. This allows more than 90% of the fuel energy to be utilized, in comparison with 40% utilization if electricity alone is produced. In comparison with individual gas- and oil-fired boilers, district heating halves energy consumption. 40% of all district heating is generated without any CO2 emission at all, thanks in part to the use of biofuels. Finally Danish district heating technology is an important export sector including consultancy, planning, insulated pipes for distribution of heat, energy conversion technology for solid and liquid biomass, natural gas and incineration of garbage. Equipment for combined heat and power is available from the smallest KW-size units to many hundred MW plants. New technologies include district heating from solar and wind. 6
7 Day 3: Wednesday, August (continued) 09:45 10:30 - Presentation in the hotel by Averhoff Energi Anlaeg A/S, The meeting takes place at Danish District Heating Association Director Bjarne Averhoff Averhoff Energi Anlaeg is a leading consulting turnkey contractor who assists Danish district heating companies and utilities with the replacement and optimisation of their plants. 7
8 Day 3: Wednesday, August (continued) 10:45 12:30 - Visit to Energinet, Danish Grid Administrator Tonne Kjærsvej 65 DK-7000 Fredericia Tel: Kim Behnke, Head of Section kbe@energinet.dk Energinet.dk is Denmark s grid administrator and is responsible for the reliable operation of the main electricity and gas transmission systems in Denmark and for ensuring sufficient supply of electricity and gas to cover consumer demand. Energinet.dk ensures equal access to Denmark s grid to all the country s diverse power producers. Energinet.dk has a mandate to purchase all Danish wind power and balances its electricity portfolio by purchasing and selling electricity from neighbouring countries. This innovative company is owned by the state of Denmark and is the world s leading smart grid operator and has become one of Europe s most advanced and reliable grid operators. 8
