Louis Corrigan Mobile Cohesion I think the MSC is useful in 2 ways - (i) as a qualification - so it instantly provides a frame of reference and level of credibility with others - before initially meeting them - I found this particularly useful as a person with a purely technical background when dealing with non technical people on the business side - e.g. Accountants, MBA's etc. I found this in dealing with people both inside my previous company (large multinational corporate) and externally. I'm sure that it helped, and would have helped further in my career progression with large corporates (had I chosen to follow that route) precisely because it gives others that frame of reference. (ii) As a learning experience. For me the MSc was an invaluable learning experience. As somebody from a purely technical background I found it difficult to communicate with, or hold the attention of non-technical people for too long - however the MSc taught me a new language, through which I now can communicate with non-technical management. It has also helped to broaden my thought process - and have a more holistic view of the complete research/development/marketing/sales process, which is at the heart of any product business. My current career path has found me in a new start-up situation - so while the MSc hasn't directly helped me 'land the job' as such - it certainly has equipped me well to do it. The interaction with people from different companies/industries is a major benefit of the course, with representatives from both multinationals and indigenous corporations. The projects assigned were always relevant and the case studies slanted towards more technology/science based companies. The relevance and application was always evident. The course is presented in a very professional format and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I would certainly recommend this course to those who want to develop their business competencies in a technology/innovative/new product development environment, from whatever business sector. It s a well thought out, well-presented and timely course covers all the necessary topics in a balanced way it certainly exceeded my expectations and has removed limitations on career development options that may not have been possible before. Certainly it has allowed me and given me the confidence to successfully present new and innovative approaches to solving process, product and technology and people issues. In 1998 I was employed as a system architect in Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd, Clonskeagh, Dublin and was concerned about our subsidiary s ability to manage technology projects and my possible contribution to such an internal competitive innovation process. I undertook the MSc program at the National Institute of Technology Management in UCD in order to help address this and give my career a further competitive advantage. To the best of my knowledge this is the only suitable program available in such a critical domain with such a strong reputation and relevant course content. The program was totally appropriate to the range of management roles and technical responsibilities within a large multinational like Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd, especially during the current difficult trading conditions, where dynamic technology strategies are required not just for mandate enhancement but for ultimate survival. Relevant topics of particular interest (excluding all obvious overlaps with typical MBA courses) are organisation & innovation, technology strategy and product development. As a large software design organisation, these modules are very useful in shaping how we can approach the acquirement, development, commercialisation and deployment of technology based products and services. My role today within Ericsson is as a senior manager of research reporting directly to the managing director. This increased responsibility came about as a result of the major project I undertook as part of the MSc and currently employees 8 professional researchers, who would otherwise not be engaged by Ericsson. Thus Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd has acquired a new long-term competitive capability necessary for its existence within the multinational, particularly during current rationalisation processes. The Masters program definitely gave me the ability, framework and confidence to manage and contribute at this higher level within the organisation. This degree program is to be highly recommended to engineers and managers engaged in product development companies both SMEs or multinationals, who are interested in having the framework and experiences to lead their sections, departments, or companies towards acquiring and maintaining continuous innovation capabilities. The MSc in Technology Management provides this training in a great location with excellent experienced Lecturers. It has given me more confidence in my decision-making! The associated NITM seminar series has also provided excellent content, with practitioners like Bob Tait and his Stage gating seminar being my highlight to date. The MSc has also provided me with a wide Network or new contacts, (my Classmates and Lecturers) in different Industries, with different relevant experiences. Taking on this course, though not easy, was definitely one of my better decisions.
