1 Accident Policy 1. To create a safe, enjoyable space for staff, children and parents. 2. To ensure that all children, staff, parents and visitors to the Centre receive appropriate first aid and follow up in the event of an accident. Accident Procedure & Injury Report Form The Centre will take a proactive approach to OH&S and children s safety, ensuring a safe building, toys and resources, and experiences. In the event of a serious accident or injury the first aider must asses the situation by; D Asses the dangers, is the patient or the first aider in any danger from the environment or equipment. R Response, Is the patient responsive to talk, touch, feel, voice commands. A Airways, are they clear and unobstructed. B Breathing, is the patient breathing unassisted. C CPR, is this required Wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) ie gloves Get the first aid kit and body fluid kit. Get someone to call an ambulance (see Ambulance Policy). Administer suitable first aid until ambulance arrives. Complete an injury report form. (See From attached) Note the patients daily details (food intake, sleep/ eat, toileting information) Collect the patient s personal file from the office. Relief staff or management will be contacted to comply with child / staff ratios for period of absence. If the patient receives external medical attention as a direct result of the injury or accident a copy of the accident form must be sent to COMMUNITY SERVICE and an external medical form (or workers comp form) completed Any accidents, injuries or incidents are managed with control and precision, with the child s welfare being a priority. In the event of a minor accident or injury the first aider must; Asses the patient. Ensure adequate supervision for all other children. Wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) ie gloves Offer comfort. Administer suitable first aid. First Aid Kits and body fluid kits are located in each room. Clean the wound (if appropriate) with paper towel and water. Ensure no equipment, toys or resources are damaged which may cause more accidents. Remove if necessary. Clean the treatment site. Dispose of any body fluids, tissues, washers etc appropriately. Complete an accident/ injury report. Staff must write their full names on to the accident/injury forms. Call parents if needed. Complete the injury monitoring system on the back of the injury form. Ensure that the parent is shown the accident report and monitoring system up on collection. Parents are to be contacted by TL s or next in charge, if the child has received: injury to neck or head, a bite (human or animal), injury causing significant bleeding, injury which may require further medical treatment. Explain that you are making a courtesy call and the state of the child. Explain what has happened in a clear manner and what has done to care for the child. Complete the injury report form ASAP including the post injury monitoring on the back. Parents must sign the report up on collection; the report form must be completed with in 1 hour of the injury and asap for head injuries. If necessary, ring ambulance immediately (see Ambulance procedure) Accident/ injury forms will be kept until the child turns 21 years of age.

Please complete over for post injury information.

4 Post Injury/Accident Monitoring System To ensure that all people who receive injury/ accidents whilst at the Centre we have ensured that sufficient monitoring of the injured person has occurred post injury. If there are any concerning changes in behaviour, skin tone, temperature or consciousness external medical assistance may be called (see Ambulance Policy). Staff are to complete the information on the back. Please note 1 5 to indicate if there are any noticeable changes from before the injury or after the injury 1 = normal for the child 5 = very unusual. If there is an increase in these changes contact the parent and management.
