1 List of Treatments for Possible Injuries/Conditions A. Apply cold compresses to affected area; elevate the area to reduce swelling and possible bleeding B. Apply direct pressure to wound area with sterile dressing; calm and reassure patient Raise the bleeding area above the level of the heart and apply pressure point bleeding control Prevent shock and monitor CABs C. Keep patient still until EMS arrives; prevent shock Do not give patient anything to eat or drink D. Stretch out the affected muscle to counteract tightening Massage the muscle area firmly, but gently Apply heat source wrapped in cloth to muscle area E. Check the CABs and keep the patient still; limit mobility Support the injured side with a pillow or folded material and secure with roller bandages Closely monitor CABs and seek medical attention immediately F. Using sterile gloves cut away clothing from the wound area

2 Apply indirect pressure around the embedded object with dressing; immobilize the object in place with bandages Closely monitor CABs and seek immediate medical attention G. Immobilize the area above and below the injury, then splint and sling the injury in position Check circulation below the injured area Monitor for shock and seek immediate medical attention H. Check circulation, keep airway open and monitor breathing Calm and reassure the patient Do not allow the patient to lie down Apply cold compress to the area to reduce pain and swelling I. Remove clothing from area, and apply cold compresses to affected area Elevate the affected area above the level of the heart Stabilize and do not move the affected area J. Keep the patient still and immobilize the area above and below the injury and sling Check for circulation below the injured area Monitor CABs and prevent shock

Cool the area with cold (not ice) water for at least 10 minutes Blot the area dry with clean (preferably sterile) cloth and cover with non-adhesive/sterile dressing Protect area from pressure or friction L. Apply cold compress to area to reduce swelling; elevate above the level of the heart to reduce blood flow to the area M. Using sterile gloves wash the wound with mild soap and running water Control bleeding with a sterile dressing and direct pressure Elevate the wound area above the level of the heart Bandage the skin edges close together and seek immediate medical attention N.Cool the patient down and place into the shock position with feet elevated a. Closely monitor the patient s CABs and watch for shock and seizures b. Keep the patient cool until EMS arrive O. Calm and reassure the patient, encouraging the patient to rest in a comfortable position a. Loosen the patient s clothing around the neck, chest and waist b. Keep the patient warm, monitor the CABs until EMS arrives

4 P. Have the patient rest with feet elevated a. Cool the patient down b. Have the patient sip electrolyte beverage c. Massage the affected muscles gently until relaxed Q. Using sterile gloves scrub the skin area with mild soap and clean washcloth under running water to wash out all tiny pieces of debris; apply antibiotic ointment and bandage affected area R.Place patient in shock position with feet elevated Keep the patient comfortable and loosen any restrictive clothing Keep patient warm, monitor CABs until EMS arrives S. Cool the patient down and place into the shock position with feet elevated a. Have patient sip cool electrolyte beverage b. Keep the patient cool and closely monitor for shock and convulsions T. Place direct pressure on wound area with sterile dressing a. Suspect neck injury and secure airway by stabilizing head and neck; do not move patient b. Keep patient calm and awake c. Check and monitor CABs U.Check patient s CABs and handle patient gently

5 a. Remove wet or restrictive clothing and replace with warm/dry clothing b. Rewarm the patient, particularly covering the head/neck c. Apply warm compresses to neck, armpits and chest wall d. If patient is conscious and alert, give warm and sweetened non-alcoholic liquids in small volumes V. Give patient abdominal thrust and back blows W. Remove any contaminated clothing a. Drench affected area with fresh water for at least 15 minutes b. Apply cool, wet compresses to relieve pain c. Monitor CABs closely X. Encourage the patient to breathe more slowly and hold breath after inhaling a. Have the patient relax and encourage talking b. Have the patient breathe in and out of cupped hands Y. Apply cold compresses to affected area a. Immobilize and elevate the affected area above the level of the heart b. Keep the patient immobile and rested as much as possible

6 Z. Move the patient to a warmer area, removing constrictive clothing a. Rewarm the affected area in warm (not hot) water for at least 30 minutes (or with wet and warm compresses) b. Move the affected area as little as possible c. Loosely wrap the affected areas to keep them warmed
