1 Newsletter for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Sue s Adieu To the Staff of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, It is with heartfelt emotion that I thank you for being with me on this journey for the past eight years. I have truly enjoyed your companionship and appreciated your support. As well as good-bye I want to say keep up the spirit of professionalism and perseverance which has gotten you here. I will continue to watch your progress with great interest and will positively share in celebrating your accomplishments. I cherish the perfect gifts and your kind words. All the Best, Sue Vollbrecht (Retired) Manager, Laboratory Medicine 1
2 Cytology Connects In November 2014 Cytopathologists and Cytotechnologists at LHSC received training on ClinicalConnect TM. Clinical Connect TM is the regional clinical viewer, created to provide health care teams secure electronic access to electronic health care records from hospitals and oncology centres in southwestern Ontario. This system allows access to patient history including radiologic and clinical findings as well as previous cytopathology results from gyn and non-gyn samples received from the Stratford- Huron-Perth Alliance Hospital group to provide best patient care in our Cytopathology service. Connecting South West Ontario (cswo) Regional Clinical Viewer: Delivering the EHR The EHR is currently being delivered in two channels: 1) the Regional Clinical Viewer, ClinicalConnect, and 2) EMR Download Technologies. ClinicalConnect TM in a Nutshell No Cost -ClinicalConnect TM is a service funded by ehealth Ontario Zero Footprint for Infrastructure -ClinicalConnect TM is a secure web portal, the only requirement being a compliant, internetconnected web browser -Health Records available from entire South West Ontario cluster (LHINs 1-4) Supports Available for Implementation and Deployment -Change Management & Adoption Delivery Partner is a team dedicated to the effort Simple Information Available in ClinicalConnect TM Available Now Available Soon Huron Perth Hospitals (5) Grey Bruce Hospitals (12) London Thames Valley Hospitals (11) SWODIN DI-R Images Phased rollout CCACs (4) Remaining ESC Hospitals (5) Bluewater Hospital (ESC) Waterloo Wellington Hospitals (6) Hamilton Niagara Hospitals Brant Hospitals (8) Getting Access to ClinicalConnect TM Find out how to get connected by contacting the cswo Change Management and Adoption Delivery Partner at cswo@sw.ccac-ont.ca. 2
3 People & Places Congratulations to Jennylyn Graham! Jenny has accepted a full time Pulmonary Assistant 4 position in the Pulmonary Function Laboratories. Recognitions Dr. Michael John, Division Head of Microbiology, is the recipient of the Joint MAC Award, for recently demonstrating qualities of leadership within the scope of their position or providing outstanding contributions to the success of initiatives aligning with the strategic directions of both LHSC and St. Joseph s. A quote from his nomination: Dr. Michael John has provided ongoing leadership to Infection Prevention and Control that has spanned both LHSC and St. Joseph s over 15 years. With the merger of the clinical laboratories and creation of the London Laboratory Services in 1998, the city-wide infection control team was created. During the time of restructuring and program transfers, in collaboration with operational leadership, Dr. John provided the medical leadership to create a vibrant infection control strategy and consistent policy framework that was aligned with each organization s strategic directions. Congratulations to Dr. Michael John on a job well done! Our People: Congratulations PaLM! What a great way to start 2015! This season during the Holiday Food Drive Challenge, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine collected 7610 pounds of food for the London Food Bank! Congratulations everyone! Once again you have made a difference in our local community with your generosity. Thank you for your continued support of the London Food Bank. 4 Update from the Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist QUALITY: Welcome to 2015! As our IQMH Assessment approaches this spring, the Quality Committee and all PaLM staff will be preparing to ensure our labs are compliant with all 524 requirements. Over the next few months, many new initiatives and reviews of existing processes will be communicated to all staff. A new ilearn on Ethical Standards rolled out on January 14 th. We sent a PaLM Staff Satisfaction Survey that was completed on January 31. Surveys are being circulated to our Customers as well and this will include our Internal Clients, External Clients and Regional Partners. SAFETY: A lab specific Safety ilearn will be assigned to staff in February. Safety Audits done twice yearly continue to identify non conformances. I encourage all staff to be proactive and do your best to ensure checklists are completed, safety requirements are adhered to and we are working in a safe manner. Please visit S:\LABM\SHARED\IQHM Section 10 Safety Checklist to view the Safety Requirements in Section X of the IQMH Checklist. It will make you aware of the many requirements we must meet. These requirements are focused on staff safety and aid us in keeping staff and patients safe on a daily basis. Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. - Robert Collier Donna Murphy Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist Pathology and Laboratory Medicine 4
5 Staff Resources: Tips for New Passwords A reminder that you will soon need a password with more oomph to access the hospital network. The next time you are asked to change your password, it must be a minimum length of 10 characters, a combination of numbers, upper and lower case letters and/or special characters and must be changed every 180 days. A tip sheet has been created by Information Technology Services to ensure your new password meets the new corporate password standard. It s available on the intranet, along with more information on the standard and answers to questions staff may have. Be sure to review the tips before it s time to change your password. Safety Matters: Paper Towels-Check your technique During flu season and always, protect yourself and the people around you by washing your hands often with soap and water or an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. After washing your hands with soap and water, shake them 12 times and dry with a single paper towel. This practice reduces waste and helps preserve the environment. Watch Joe Smith's 4-minute TED Talk to learn more. TIL: Today I Learned In 2010, Finland became the first nation in the world to make internet access a legal right for it s citizens, requiring at that time that internet access providers make available for purchase a minimum of 1Mbps connection within 2 km of every Finnish citizen. This was no small feat considering certain very remote regions of the country. A poll conducted for the BBC World Service found that almost four in five people around the world believed that access to the internet is a fundamental right. Finland s original plan was to increase the connection to 100Mbps by 2015, something that is close to happening! Lab Link Articles To submit an article please contact Laura Gopaul at ext or by . Submissions may be edited to ensure that language and content appropriately reflect LHSC core values of respect, trust and collaboration.
