2 WELCOME TO SAIT POLYTECHNIC Whether you are starting your very first semester, or getting ready to graduate, a student award in the form of a scholarship or bursary can help you achieve your goals and find success. Every year, more than $4 million in awards is available to SAIT students in almost every program through the generosity of our corporate partners, alumni, faculty, staff and friends. An award might mean you don t have to take that part-time job to finance your studies. An award might mean recognition for academic success or community involvement. An award might make the difference between just wanting to attend and being able to attend. You ll find everything you need to know about applying for awards in this publication. You can also attend one of our special award assistance labs to learn more about the process turn to Page 2 of this book for more information. I encourage you to apply. You are a valued member of the SAIT family, and you re here at an exciting time in SAIT s history. In 2016, this institution will celebrate its centennial. In just under 100 years, we have grown from a tiny school on the northern edge of town to today s state-of-the-art campus, and we are well on our way to our goal of becoming a global leader in applied education. Throughout our 10 decades, more than 211,000 students have graduated from SAIT, and the Alumni and Development team is proud of our alumni, and all they have achieved. But our team doesn t focus only on people who have already graduated. Alumni and Development is just as dedicated to supporting the career goals of our current students. We re here to help, and we d love to meet you. So be sure to drop by the Alumni and Development window (MA 113 in Heritage Hall) to say hello. On behalf of the Alumni and Development team, I wish you a great year and continued success. Brian Bowman Director, Alumni and Development

4 FACES OF STUDENT SUCCESS This guide includes the information you ll need to apply for a student award, and it also shares the inspirational stories of SAIT students who have already received awards people like me. Just as I was completing my studies in the Radio, Television and Broadcast News program, I received the Brandi Costar Memorial award. It helped me pay for tuition and lifted the financial stress of having been a student for two years. I graduated from SAIT in 2009, and now I m not only a proud alumna, I m also working here! My job title is Student and New Alumni Coordinator, and I m dedicated to ensuring your time at SAIT is as enjoyable and fruitful as possible. I know what it s like to study here and how great it feels to graduate with a SAIT credential. I also know that, sometimes, you have questions or you need help. If you re not sure where to start or who to ask, be sure to contact me. If I can t help, I ll know who can and I can put you in touch. I ll be on campus from residence move-in, all the way to graduation day, so be sure to say Hi! And watch out for my Swagon, filled with SAITbranded freebies. I m part of SAIT s Alumni and Development team, and together we offer: Networking events that will connect you with your industry a great way to learn more about your future career. Who knows? Maybe you ll meet a future employer. Volunteer opportunities that are fun and worthwhile (plus they ll beef up your resume). Help out as little or as often as you d like. For more information, visit sait.ca/alumni or [email protected]. Award assistance labs, because making student awards as accessible as possible is one of my own personal goals. Each lab will connect you with staff who can answer your questions and help you start the award application process. Watch for information on mysait.ca before each major award deadline for the award assistance lab schedule. Free business cards. Watch in the coming months for your free business cards perfect for handing out at networking events. From the moment you arrive on campus, the Alumni and Development team and I will do all we can to support your career goals. It may only take a handful of years to graduate, but once you do, you ll always be a member of our alumni family. As a SAIT student, then a SAIT alumna, and now as a SAIT staff member, I ve gotten to know and appreciate SAIT from just about every angle. I m a vocal advocate of my alma mater, and I hope you ll feel the same way. Welcome to SAIT! Courtney Garlough Student and New Alumni Coordinator [email protected] 2 sait.ca

Her mother could only afford to send Siranuch to school until she was 16; then she had to go to work. Sira, as she likes to be called, met her husband and moved to Canada in She set out to improve her English so she could go back to school. A couple of years later, Colquhoun enrolled in SAIT Polytechnic s Travel and Tourism program. My mother is so proud, says Colquhoun. I m the first in my family to graduate from a post-secondary school. During her time at SAIT, Colquhoun received a Sam Switzer student award. Every year, it distributes $6,000 to five students. The Sam Switzer student award helped Colquhoun to achieve her education goals, and now she says she is determined to pay back that help throughout the rest of her life. I am so honoured to have received this scholarship, Colquhoun says. It gives me the incentive I need to further my education. She says she wants to continue her education and she s currently contemplating her options. Meanwhile, she has plans to go back to her village in Eastern Thailand and spread her good fortune. I plan to use the money to pay off my SAIT tuition and for future education, but with what s left over I would like to help more of the students from my village, says Colquhoun. For the past few years, she and her husband have been going back and giving eight of the best students in her old school a scholarship to help them buy much needed books, school supplies and clothing. This year, with the help of Sam Switzer, Colquhoun says she is going to double the amount of students she will help. Colquhoun also cooks a big lunch to feed the entire school. The Thai government only provides the equivalent of 30 cents per student for lunch and Colquhoun says she nearly triples that. The kids get a full lunch including a choice of meat and ice cream for dessert. I believe in giving back what I get. It s a full circle that goes round and round, passing on the good along the way.

I was under tremendous financial pressure and, when not in class, I was aggressively taking part-time jobs. My busy schedule was about to become a challenge for my family life and for my academic performance, so the financial assistance through the award came as a great relief. I look forward to an opportunity to thank the donors who have helped me and hope that, one day, I will be able to do similar acts of kindness. On August 1, 2009, three-year-old Michelle Krsek was tragically killed when strong wind gusts blew a large piece of metal off an 18-storey tower under construction in downtown Calgary. Michelle has not been forgotten and her death has become a catalyst. The City of Calgary has teamed up with SAIT Polytechnic to create an academic award aimed at raising awareness of construction project safety. Avree Bujaczek, a third-year student in SAIT s Bachelor of Science in Construction Project Management, was one of two recipients of the Michelle Krsek Memorial Award in 2014 its inaugural year. The significance of this bursary is not lost on Bujaczek. The reason for the award is so sad, but what they ve done with that tragedy is really powerful, says Bujaczek. It s really made people in the industry think about safety and make changes (to create) safer construction sites. The award has also brought change to Bujaczek s life. The $1,750 bursary offered a bit of financial breathing room in a tight student budget financed through student loans and a line of credit. As a mature student, the financial assistance is a huge help, she says, adding that the extra cash allowed her to better focus on her studies. And that focus will help make a difference. Bujaczek is passionate about what she s learning, about the hands-on way it s being taught, and about the curriculum aimed at advancing construction site safety. We (Construction Project Management students) will be able to take that culture of safety we re learning and apply it to our worksites to make everyone safer, says Bujaczek. VANESSA BROWN STUDENT WITH AN IRON WILL REAPS REWARDS WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR ENERGY? You ve been working hard for your education, and we recognize that. Enerplus is seeking the best and brightest and offers competitive salaries, a collaborative work environment and a spirit of community giving. With a team of 800, we re a growing North American energy producer with world-class oil and gas assets. If you want to be part of a top notch team that thinks outside the box, let s talk. Visit jobs.enerplus.com to learn more about our student, and new graduate opportunities. Vanessa Brown is grateful to SAIT Polytechnic for helping her feed two of her lifelong passions: athletics and health care. A native Calgarian, Brown is in her second year of Respiratory Therapy studies in the School of Health and Public Safety. Respiratory therapists care for patients by evaluating, treating and maintaining cardiopulmonary (heart and lung) function. Brown is also an Ironman athlete. She recently won in her category at the Whistler Ironman competition, where she swam 4 km, biked 180 km and ran 42 km all within 12 hours. Her victory qualified her to represent Canada in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. Training for an Ironman is expensive. I was working two part-time jobs to pay for school and for training for Whistler, says the 22 year old. When I read the letter telling me I had received a SAIT student award, it was just like a reward for all my hard work. Brown works equally hard on her studies. She has been interested in anatomy since she was a teenager. I loved biology and science in high school. I knew I wanted a career in health care. She studied kinesiology at university for two years before switching to respiratory therapy at SAIT. Brown says it was a great decision. Class sizes at SAIT are drastically different. In university my classes were in 500-seat lecture halls. I felt like a number. Here at SAIT I m in a class of 55, which means I have a real relationship with my instructors. I get way more one-on-one time with them. Brown received the Jack Dallas Memorial award for leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship and athletic participation, and she reflects each of those values in her daily life. She says receiving this award is extremely meaningful because its namesake was an avid curler and a Shriner, just like her grandfather. And Brown is just as keen to succeed in her studies at SAIT as she is to finish an Ironman competition. I know I want to work in a hospital. I hope to work in pediatrics, possibly at Alberta Children s Hospital. I ll know for sure after I do my practicum, she says. I love setting goals. I love achieving goals. 30 sait.ca Student Awards Guide 2015/

35 TAMARA MARCHESIN STUDENT AWARD IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE FOR SAIT BAKING STUDENT The path to the right career can sometimes require a bit of travelling. For Tamara Marchesin, arriving at a career in baking and pastry arts has been both a figurative and a literal voyage, and it s a destination she s reached with the support of a student award. Finding the right career was a bit of a journey, says Marchesin, but I ve figured out what I m passionate about and I feel really fortunate. Marchesin s exploration began with general maths and sciences classes at the University of Lethbridge. She learned a lot, but she had no idea where those courses might take her. After Marchesin s second year of undergrad studies, still unsure of her career direction, she decided to take a year off to travel and think about her options. She began working full time in a Lethbridge cake shop to save money for her trip. Baking had always been a hobby, but Marchesin was amazed at how much she enjoyed baking as a job. I thought, I love doing this, she says. Marchesin s inkling about baking was confirmed later that year when she was exposed to European pastries during her three-month backpacking trip there. The pastries there are phenomenal. I felt so inspired that when I came back to Canada, I went back to work full time to save for a year and then I registered in the baking program at SAIT, she says. Fast forward two years to early 2014 and Marchesin is a graduate of SAIT s Baking and Pastry Arts program. But her journey with SAIT has continued even after her classes ended, thanks to a student award Marchesin received from the Châine des Rôtisseurs in March Châine is an international gastronomic society devoted to promoting fine dining and encouraging the development of young chefs. Each year, one student from the School of Hospitality and Tourism is selected for the award on the basis of academic achievement and an essay submission. I was pretty excited, says Marchesin. It was quite an honour to receive it. Marchesin is also excited about what the Châine award s financial support will enable her to do. She will complete the journey to her baking career with one more trip, joining her classmates and instructors on a one-week SAIT Baking and Pastry Arts study trip to New York City. The award has really enabled me to make the most of the New York trip, says Marchesin. Because it s fully pastry focused, we re meeting with the best of the best people in my industry. We re getting lessons from amazing, amazing chefs. It s the opportunity of a lifetime. For Marchesin, having the chance to travel and learn from industry icons as she prepares to launch a career she loves is surely the icing on the cake. There are easier ways to make a living, Alex. Although Nielsen knew laying bricks wasn t what he wanted to do for a living, he also knew something easy wasn t among his criteria for a future career, either. What he wanted was a career he could feel passionate about. He has found that career in Hospitality Management, and it s an industry in which he s already been working hard. For seven years after high school, Nielsen lived in Denmark, where he worked in a bar. And he loved it. During a trip back to Denmark, a conversation with a friend helped Nielsen connect the dots. My friend said that, since I was so passionate about the service industry, I should consider a career in it. And that s what I did. Nielsen enrolled in SAIT s Hospitality Management program and soon began reaping the rewards of his bricklayer s work ethic. In his second year of studies, Nielsen earned three student awards, including the Willow Park Wines & Spirits award for the highest mark in beverage management, a South Calgary Rotary Club award for food and beverage service, and the SKAL International Calgary award for successful completion of an internship. I can t tell you how much of a help these awards are, says Nielsen. The biggest part is that they really inspired me to keep working hard. Hard work and hustle are Nielsen s M.O. He worked 110 hours beyond the 480 hours required to complete his program internship, working at two restaurants for four months between school semesters. Currently, Nielsen works as a server at La Chaumiere an institution in fine dining and French cuisine in Calgary for 36 years. Here, he s applying his ambition and the skills he acquired at SAIT to learn the industry from the dining room floor up, in the hopes of owning his own restaurant someday. I feel like my education at SAIT gave me a well-rounded foundation. It gave me the theoretical training and the practical, hands-on training I need to succeed. That balance was one of the things that drew me to SAIT, and I think it will benefit me going forward.
