1 CANADIAN HOSPITALITY FOUNDATION 2013 SCHOLARSHIP Bachelor of Applied Business Degree in Hospitality Management Sponsored by John Rothschild $2,500 Who Can Apply College Students: First or second year students of a community college currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Business Degree in Hospitality Operations Management University Students: Third or fourth year students who have finished a diploma program and enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality & Tourism Management or Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel & Food Administration. (2 + 2) Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants Students who have received other Canadian Hospitality Foundation scholarships in the past are eligible to apply. How to Apply Applications are available online: Send the completed application form and the required documents directly to the Canadian Hospitality Foundation, 300 Adelaide St. East, Rm 339, Toronto ON M5A 1N1, on or before the deadline date (please note that missing, falsified or incomplete documents will be grounds for elimination): Application form: completed and signed (pen or typewritten only) OFFICIAL Transcripts of Records: (1) your current complete academic history at the college you are enrolled in now. (2) If you are coming from another college and going to a different college to pursue your bachelor s degree, we will also need your transcript from the diploma program (web grades, academic records, photocopy, ed or faxed transcripts will NOT be accepted). Letters of recommendation from your program instructor and/or Administrator must be signed and must include the person s address, telephone and address (on school letterhead) One or more letters of recommendation from your past or current employers (reference letters for volunteer activities will also be considered) must be signed and must include address, telephone and address (on company letterhead). Resumé An essay on one of the topics listed on the application form (300 words) 1 of 5

2 The Foundation reserves the right to check all references. All French language documents must have an English translation attached. Criteria Applications are reviewed by the scholarship sponsor and will be judged on the following criteria (note points assigned to each of the criteria from a total of 100 points): Work experience (20): based on quality and length of work experience with extra points for foodservice, hospitality, and culinary-related experience and for increased levels of responsibility Scholastic record (20): based on grade point average Leadership and ability to get along with others (20): based on work experience, letters of reference and responses to application questions Professional Promise (20): based on work experience, letters of reference and responses to application questions Essay (10): evaluated on how well it is written, relevance to topic and knowledge of topic Discretionary points (10): given at the discretion of the sponsor and based amongst other things on quality of application (neatness, imagination and effort put into its presentation) Deadline for Submission Application and the required documents must be mailed directly to the Canadian Hospitality Foundation office no later than Friday, May 17, Applications received after that date will not be eligible Payment of Scholarship Money The scholarship money will be paid in its entirety in November of the year the scholarship is awarded. The Foundation will seek confirmation of full-time enrollment from the college before payment is made. Payment is made directly to the college for credit towards the recipient s tuition fees. If the tuition fee has already been paid in full, the money will then be paid to the student by the college. Please write your 300-word essay on one of the following topics and make sure your essay has your name on it: 1. As our world increasingly becomes a "global village", managers are faced with the task of managing a very diverse workforce. What strategies would you implement to successfully lead such a workforce? 2. Employee retention is a major issue in the foodservice-hospitality industry. Additionally, the industry is facing a major shortage of skilled workers. What actions would you take to ensure that your 400-set casual/fine-dining restaurant does not fall victim to these trends? 3. What significant changes have occurred in the structure of the hotel industry in the last decade and why? 4. What are the factors an independent hotelier should take into consideration in deciding whether to brand a property?
