1 Kinship Resource Guide YMCA Kinship Navigator Program San Diego County

2 Dear Kinship Caregiver, This guide was created as a resource for Kinship families residing in San Diego County by the YMCA Kinship Program. It is a list of agencies and programs, which address issues commonly faced by Kinship families and is organized first by need and then by region of the county that is served. Please see the table of contents on the next page for a complete list of need topics and corresponding page numbers. The YMCA Kinship Program provides services to relative caregivers throughout San Diego County. The mission of the Kinship program is: To support to kinship caregivers throughout San Diego County in achieving safety, permanency, and well-being for their families through education, advocacy and community collaboration. The Kinship Program offers a variety of services including: Kinship Navigator Services: - Assessment of family needs - Information and referral - Education - Advocacy - Short-term case management Case Management Services (more intensive services for families involved in the child welfare system) Respite Service (for caregivers who are 55 and older) In addition to the Kinship Program, the YMCA of San Diego County offers many community and social services through the programs in the Youth and Family Services and Childcare Resource Service departments as well as at the 14 branch sites (swim and gym facilities) located throughout the county. See the YMCA section of this guide for more information about all branches, departments, and camps. Quick, free access to information about community, health, human and disaster services in San Diego County. Toll-free telephone number and can be used to access County services. ACCESS ACCESS Customer Service Center (866) An extension of the County of San Diego Family Resource Centers (FRC's). Serves residents, providers, and other government agencies with questions or needs related to Family Resource Center programs and services (public benefits). Agents provide assistance via phone, , and fax, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm, excluding County holidays. Adoptions County Adoptions 5950 Levant St. San Diego, CA (877) Licensed public adoption agency which serves all members of the adoption triad: adoptees, birth families, and adoptive parents. Both voluntary relinquishments as well as adoptions of children from the foster care system are handled by the agency, which is staffed by professional social workers. Adult/Elder Abuse Adult Protective Services (800) Serves adults 65 and older and dependent adults 18 and older, who are harmed, or threatened with harm, to ensure their right to safety and dignity. APS investigates elder and dependent adult abuse, including cases of neglect and abandonment, as well as physical, sexual and financial abuse. After-School Programs The best way to apply for before and after school care for your child is to call the child's school directly and ask if they offer a free or low-cost after school program. At-Risk Youth (Countywide) Alliance for Community Empowerment (ACE) (800) ACE-9458 A partnership of community organizations working together to address the effects of community violence, strengthen the family, and empower the community. ACE offers: mobile response teams, gang awareness, strengthening families, and a leadership academy. Services are offered free of charge throughout San Diego County. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego 115 West Woodward Avenue Escondido, CA (866) Provides a variety of programs for youth including day camps, after school programming, health and life skills, character and leadership, education and career, sports and fitness, and the arts. 5 California Youth Crisis Line (800) A toll-free helpline available 24 hours a day to youth and their families in crisis or need with confidential and non-judgmental crisis-intervention counseling and appropriate referrals to assist callers with issues such as family problems, runaway and homelessness, depression, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, suicide and more. Job Corps (800) A free education and training program that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED, and find and keep a good job. For eligible youth at least 16 years of age. Juvenile Diversion Program (619) Enables eligible youth, including at risk and high-risk youth, to prevent entry or re-entry into the juvenile justice system. The service target population is youth from 12 to 17 years of age. Services include: Skill Building, Community Service, Academic Assistance, Agency Referral, Counseling, and Case Management. National Runaway Switchboard (800) Offers 7 day/ 24 hour crisis intervention, including information and referral, message service for youth and their legal guardians, conference calls to family or agencies providing help, and free bus rides home. San Diego County Probation Department - Juvenile Probation Center 9444 Balboa Ave., Suite 500 San Diego, CA (858) Offers resources to parents, families, schools, and concerned friends who need help steering at-risk youth toward positive activities. The Department partners with community-based organizations located throughout San Diego County to offer assessments and case management at no cost. The program serves teens through in-school curriculum aimed at assisting youth to make responsible decisions relevant to sexual and reproductive behavior. Transitional Youth Academy 2195 Oceanside Blvd. Oceanside, CA (760) A prevention and intervention program for high-risk youth, which offers intensive behavioral health and crisis intervention counseling, as well as case management, educational supportive services, vocational development, and life skills training. (South) Community Assessment Teams 1124 Bay Blvd, Ste D, Chula Vista, CA, (619) Assists families with youth who are at risk for involvement in the criminal justice or dependency systems and provides assessment, prevention, and referral services and can link families to drug and alcohol treatment, housing information, education, employment, and life skills training. Also serves as a resource for teens providing pregnancy prevention education, leadership training, job readiness, and career planning. Sliding scale. South Bay Community Services - Youth Services 1124 Bay Blvd. #D, Chula Vista (619) Provides youth with a full spectrum of services designed to offer youth the resources and skills they need to reach their full potential and give their best to themselves and their community. Programs include housing and support for homeless and runaway youth and youth aging out of the foster care system, as well as counseling, tutoring and job skill training.
