1 Alief ISD Alief Career and Technical Education FEBRUARY 18, 2013 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Meet the New Certified Nurse Aides! T en Alief CTE students completed the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program. Pictured at left are five of the seven students who have received the state certification which allows them to pursue a job as a Certified Nurse Aide. The program is a 96 hour program combining classroom instruction and clinical practice in a nursing facility. To receive the certification, the students completed a skills performance in a nursing facility and a 60 question written examination. They had to successfully complete the skills performance to take the written examination. In this program, Alief CTE students attend classes at Alief and at Houston Community College Bissonnet facility. The spring class of CNA students has begun their journey to their CNA certification. They will sit for their examination in May. Holub Students Explore Careers on the Go S tudents in Ms. Jefferson s Exploring Careers class at Holub Middle School have been assisting the CTE department with the impending pilot for the Careers on the Go I-Pad program. The CTE department has provided ten I-Pads that store career e-books, Achieve Texas magazines, KUDER resources, as well as other beneficial information that will use technology to provide resources to students. The I-Pads will rotate to all of the district middle schools in the spring semester and will be available for classes to use. The 7 th and 8 th grade students have been completing lessons and activities that are geared towards their career focus and future goals. The technologically-savvy students are providing feedback on the ease of use of the electronic device, as well as the relevancy of the content and the interest of the prepared lessons. The information gathered from the students will then be integrated to make this program both engaging and successful. Remember February is CTE MONTH Check out our displays In the Administration Building
2 ALIEF CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION Page 2 CTE Students Speak at Elementary Career Days CTE seniors in advanced level programs spoke to elementary students recently at Boone Career Day. The high school seniors told students about the CTE programs in high school that they are studying. The programs of Culinary Arts, Engineering, Health Science and Automotive Technology were represented by the students. CTE students are scheduled to go to several other elementary Career Days in February. Horticulture students learn caregiving of plants Students spin the Wheel of Fortune at the Reality Fair Principles Students Get a Dose of Reality Learning to live with a budget is the goal of the CU4 Reality Fairs held at Elsik and Hastings Ninth Grade Centers. Students from Alief s Principles of Business, Marketing and Finance classes from Taylor, Kerr, Elsik and Hastings Ninth Grade Centers participated in the fairs held in November and December The CU 4 Reality Fair is a fun and exciting simulation of spending and budgeting based on career choices and lifestyle decisions. After studying budgeting in their classroom, students choose a career. When they attend the fair, students are given a salary for that career. They then plan a monthly budget. At the fair, students use their salary to purchase housing, transportation, and other items such as electronics, clothing and pets. During the fairs, community volunteers are on hand to help students select the items based on their salary. They also have simulated credit counseling. This event is an initiative of Texas Credit Union League and is being sponsored by Peoples Trust Credit Union and Shared Resources Credit Union. Culinary Students Win Top Prize Students in CTE s Culinary Arts program recently participated in the first annual Soup er Bowl cook off sponsored by the Houston Westchase Rotary Club. The culinary students battled against nine other teams in the competition and fared exceptionally well with their chicken tortilla soup entry by taking home the first place title. The event was held at the Quillan Center in Houston and the proceeds from the event benefitted the Houston Westchase Rotary, WHAM (West Houston Assistance Ministries), as well as provided scholarship money for deserving Alief ISD students.
