5 OPENING REMARKS District Snapshot Purpose of this community input session Public input for development of a potential bond referendum for action by the WFISD Board of Trustees To represent the entire community in the planning process How the input will be utilized
6 SCHOOL FACILITIES School facilities are powerful indicators of community values and aspirations They can also address the social, educational, recreational, and personal needs of the members of the broader community Schools should be a resource to the community at-large Environment affects learning When school facilities are perceived this way, value is created for the school and for the community, since families can be strengthened and communities can realize added vitality (Source: BEST Collaborative Policy 2005)
7 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL S Provide Student Population relief at all Elementary Schools Aligns all 6 th graders with 7 th and 8 th grade students academically with state curriculum standards Places all 6 th graders at Junior High Schools Currently 182 out of th graders at Junior High Schools - All other 6 th graders at an Elementary Campus 400 Student Classroom additions and limited existing facility renovations at both Barwise and McNeil Junior High Schools Limited existing facility renovations at Kirby Junior High Changes all Junior High Schools to true Middle School grade level alignment
8 CAREER EDUCATION HB 5 Passed by state legislature in 2013 All district current freshman are aligned with this state law Current district facilities do not align with HB 5 A new Career Center allows WFISD to offer classes for all five endorsements included in HB 5 Perot Commission started in 1984 began this program and need for the 60% students that do not go to college as well as 40 % that do go to college 5 of top 10 occupations in future are in medical fields All 3800 High School Students will have the opportunity to utilize this facility Partnerships with local community, colleges, Chamber to train for local workforce needs
9 WHAT IS CAREER EDUCATION? BACK THEN Career education has taken on a whole new identity Course offerings were once limited to shop class and agriculture, focused on trades that supported a farming-based economy. Programs today are less agriculturefocused and better designed to prepare students for higher level skills and entry into today s workforce
10 WHAT IS CAREER EDUCATION? TODAY Goal: to help students discover their interests and the educational pathway that can lead to success Real world training The opportunity to uncover their desired path for themselves

16 BRIDGE TO COLLEGE & CAREER COLLEGE READINESS Students can receive college credit in high school through these programs. Partnerships with local colleges can provide advanced educational opportunities.
17 BRIDGE TO COLLEGE & CAREER WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Students are trained and certified in their chosen field of work. Studies have shown that graduation and retention rates are increased with these programs. Students are prepared to begin their careers immediately after graduation.
