1 5/1/13 Associate in Applied Science Radiologic Technology Carl Sandburg College offers a two-year associate degree program in Radiologic Technology, beginning each year in June. This program is designed to prepare students to perform diagnostic x-ray examinations on patients in hospitals, imaging centers, physicians offices, and other healthrelated institutions. Radiologic technologists use x-ray equipment to create images of organs, bones and blood vessels of the body. An x-ray image, or radiograph, is produced when a small amount of radiation passes through a body part and is recorded on film or stored electronically on computers. Radiologic technologists must accurately position patients and manipulate x-ray equipment to ensure that high quality diagnostic images are produced. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, radiographic techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. Radiologic technologists work closely with physicians who then interpret the images to either confirm or rule out disease or injury. Working Conditions: Radiologic technologists may work in a variety of health care facilities, although most are employed in hospitals or major medical centers. Technologists typically work 40-hour weeks that may include evening, weekend or on-call hours dependent upon their employment setting. Physical stamina is important in diagnostic imaging because technologists are on their feet for long periods of time and may be required to lift or turn disabled patients. Employment: Employment of radiologic technologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through The median salary for radiologic technologists in the State of Illinois is $48,400 ( However, earnings will vary by geographic location, employment setting, and experience. Accreditation/Licensure: Carl Sandburg College is accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools The Higher Learning Commission, 30 LaSalle Street, Suite 2400, Chicago, IL Graduates are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography-RT(R). This certification is nationally recognized and enables the student to pursue employment throughout the United States. For Additional Program Information Contact: Counselor: Dan Yasenko, dyasenko@sandburg.edu or for an appointment Admission to limited enrollment programs is competitive and selection is based on candidates overall academic performance. All prospective students for the Radiologic Technology program must submit all admission materials and meet admission requirements before their applications will be considered for review. Applicants who are denied admission to a program and wish to apply for a subsequent academic year must repeat the application process in its entirety. As a result, no application files are carried over from the prior year which allows the evaluation process to begin anew October 1 of each year. The most qualified applicants who are residents of the Carl Sandburg College district or who are residents of a community college district participating in a cooperative agreement with Carl Sandburg College will be given preference for admission to the programs. Number of Students Admitted Each Year: 16 per year
2 Admission Requirements for Radiologic Technology (AAS) Admission is competitive. Only the most qualified applicants are admitted. Applications are accepted October 1 through February 15 for review in March. Applicants will be notified in writing within two weeks of the admission meeting of admission status. If necessary, an additional review session may be scheduled with a deadline for materials by May 30. Admission Process After the review of applications each student will be offered conditional admission, placed on the alternate list, or denied admission. Alternates will be offered conditional admission as positions on the conditional admission list become available. In order to be given full admission to the program the student must complete all program specific paperwork as required. This paperwork will be distributed and discussed in depth at a mandatory meeting. Additional information regarding the mandatory meeting will be contained in the letter sent from the Admission Office notifying students of initial program admission status. All students, including those on alternate lists, are required to attend the mandatory meeting to pick up program specific paperwork and hear the discussions that take place. Students who do not attend a mandatory meeting will not be given this paperwork and will forfeit their position on the admission list. Students who are conditionally admitted (including alternates) to the Radiologic Technology program must pay a $100 deposit when notified of initial program admission status to guarantee a place on the admission list. Once the student registers and pays his/her tuition, the $100 will be applied towards tuition. Students who accept their seat and drop for any reason will forfeit their money. Alternates who are not admitted will receive a refund. Admission Requirements: (Application Deadline February 15) 1. 3 Students interested in enrolling in this program may complete as many general education courses as they wish before going through the application process. Although it is not necessary, it is recommended to complete as many of the general education courses prior to the start of the RDT coursework, due to the rigorous quality of the program. General education courses do not have to be taken at CSC, although course equivalency should be verified prior to completion of courses at other institutions. NOTE: This program requires a criminal background check, health evaluation including proof of immunity, a 10-panel drug screen, and CPR certification prior to entering radiologic technology classes. Details for these requirements are presented at the mandatory meeting. Notes of general interest: *It is strongly recommended that BIO, MAT, CHM/PHY and MDT courses be completed no more than five (5) years prior to the starting date of the program. *It is highly recommended, but not required, that students taking Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 211 & 212 or equivalencies) complete both of these courses at the same institution. The equivalency for the CHM 100 or PHY 151 can be satisfied by completing one year of high school Chemistry with grades of B or higher or one year of high school Physics with grades of B or higher. Notice to Applicants of the Radiologic Technology Program: Your personal history may affect your ability to be certified / licensed as a radiographer. In order to be eligible for A.R.R.T. certification, candidates must be of good moral character. The qualifications for candidate eligibility for certification are reproduced below from Section IIA of the Examinee Handbook of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists: Candidates must be of good moral character. Generally, the conviction of either (1) a felony, or (2) any offense, misdemeanor or felony involving moral turpitude indicates a lack of good moral character for Registry purposes. Those who have been convicted of a crime may be eligible for registration if they have served their entire sentence, including probation and parole, and have had their civil rights restored. In addition, the application for licensure in the State of Illinois asks the following questions: 1. Have you ever been convicted of a felony? 2. Have you been denied or had a license/certification revoked? 3. Have you been formally notified of any complaint against you relative to the practice of radiologic technology? 4. Have you had a drug or alcohol abuse problem? 5. Do you have a mental or physical disability that, through the practice of your duties, may be dangerous to patients or the public? A response of yes to any of the above may result in the delay or denial of your license. Questions regarding eligibility for A.R.R.T. certification and/or Illinois licensure may be directed to: The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists IEMA, Division of Nuclear Safety 1255 Northland Drive 1035 Outer Park Drive St. Paul, MN Springfield, IL (651) (217) OR (217) NOTE: Students enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program must complete all RDT courses with a grade of "C" or better in order to register for subsequent courses. In order to graduate, each student must complete all required courses with a grade of "C" or better.
