3 Judging is meaningful. As a judge, you can help them understand what they are doing right, and where they need improvement. You ll help them get a realistic sense of the standards they will be held to as job applicants and corporate managers. And, just by your efforts, you will be encouraging them to stay on an aggressive path of hard work and intellectual exploration. Most students competing in the Case Competition come from regions of the country where challenging academic regimens are something of misnomer. Politics, funding deficits, and system-wide lethargy have created an environment where lack of achievement is too often the status quo. But they don t want your sympathy. They want your support. These students have stepped up to the challenge. They ve given up their spare time after school and on weekends. While their friends are hanging out, Case Competition competitors are learning how to perform a SWOT analysis, read financial statements, and communicate ideas. Updated as of 1/28/

4 HOW TO BECOME A JUDGE GENERAL CRITERIA FOR JUDGES: Judges should be corporate or academic professional or entrepreneurs. Judges should be management or executives and have ten years of experience. The National Case Competition teaches students that they can accomplish more than they have ever imagined if they are pushed harder than they have ever been pushed. They want to rise to a new level of expectation. And they are counting on you to set the bar. Finals judges should be senior executives with 15 years of experience or more. Generally, judges are asked to pay for their own travel and accommodations. To prepare, judges will be asked to read and become familiar with the case and judging and scoring guidelines. Additional information will also be provided to help judges understand standards and scoring techniques. Judges are asked to hold competitors to the same standards that MBA candidates are held to in graduate school, not the standards generally associated with high school. 4 Updated as of 1/28/2015 4

5 THE LOT NATIONAL BUSINESS CASE COMPETITION The future of the American workforce gathers each June at the Leaders of Tomorrow Business Case Competition for one incredible show of force and competence. Reset Your Expectations. High school students analyze an MBA-level business case and present recommendations before panels of senior corporate executives and business school faculty Students must master advanced math, critical thinking, analytical, writing, research and presentation skills Students must also present detailed financial projections and implementation plans Judges are instructed to evaluate participants not as high school students, but with the same level of objectivity they would use when evaluating a graduate student. Students must defend their ideas in a high-pressure environment that invites scrutiny from both their peers and professionals The competition attracts teams from more than 25 cities across the country Updated as of 1/28/

6 BUSINESS CASE COMPETITION HIGHLIGHTS AT-A-GLANCE The LOT National Business Case Competition will be held June 26-28, 2015 at Rice University in Houston, TX. More than 900 students have participated in the competition Over more than thirteen years, the competition has provided more than $400,000 in scholarships and programming support Teams from more than 28 cities have participated in the competition Participation in the competition is free for all students Teams have analyzed companies including Apple, Starbucks, the National Basketball Association, Black Entertainment Television, Walmart, Samsung, and EMI The first competition was held in Atlanta, GA in 2001 Updated as of 1/28/

7 Jamira Burley A Success Story As a Temple University student majoring in international business and legal studies with a minor in Chinese, Jamira Burley considered herself on a mission to use her personal experiences as a driving force to improve the lives of others. She is used to setting an example she was the first of sixteen siblings to graduate from high school, though that high school was one of the top ten most persistently dangerous high schools in Philadelphia. Death and incarceration were facts of life in her immediate family. She credits the Philadelphia Leaders of Tomorrow program with helping her learn how to excel. Today, she is the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Mayor s Youth Commission. Years after she first participated on a case team, Jamira still relies on the training she received through LOT. The skills that I gained and developed are now helping pave the way in my current attempt to gain my business degree at Temple University, she explains. Although a troublesome child and a pain to a number of my mentors, never once did they give up on me and for that I am grateful. They helped me realize that there is no such thing as a glass ceiling and that I alone can place constrictions on myself.
