1 Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Accelerated Training Yoga Shanti WHB: January - May, 2016 What is Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT)? Imagine a healthcare system where the patient is treated, not just the disease a system where Eastern healing techniques support Western medicine in a holistic approach to patient care. In 2009, the Urban Zen Foundation launched the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program (UZIT) toward realizing this vision. The UZIT program includes training in yoga therapy, essential oil therapy, Reiki, nutrition and contemplative care. Inspired by Donna Karan and designed by Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee, UZIT trains members of the healthcare and yoga communities to provide its cluster of therapeutic support services to people facing illness, injury or stress, those in and out of a hospital setting, including senior care facilities, hospice, nursing schools as well as serving staff at secondary schools. Its curriculum is uniquely designed to address the classic symptoms associated with illness: Exhaustion, Pain, Anxiety, Nausea, Insomnia and Constipation (PANIC ). More than 750 students have completed the program, which includes a minimum of 50 hours of clinical rotation in a hospital or healthcare setting or in private or out-patient settings. Visit the Urban Zen website for more information on this inspiring work.
2 About the UZIT Accelerated Training Program This application-based Accelerated program is designed for individuals who are already established in one or more of the Urban Zen modalities (yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, doctor, nurse or other allied medical professional, essential oil therapist). Lectures and practice sessions include training in the 5 Urban Zen modalities and how to layer them to alleviate the symptoms of PANIC (Pain, Anxiety, Nausea, Insomnia and Constipation): Yoga Therapy including in-chair and in-bed movement, restorative yoga, breathing practices and guided meditation/body scans Reiki includes Level 1 Reiki training for self practice and for use in clinical setting Essential Oil Therapy training and practice with 10 therapeutic-grade essential oils including Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Frankincense and other special blends. Participants will learn benefits and contra-indications for each essential oil. Nutrition including nutritional information as a form of self-care for UZITs. Contemplative Care training and practice in the ability to stay present, calm and effective in the midst of suffering. The UZIT program equips therapists with the necessary tools to avoid the burnout that is rampant in the nursing and caregiving communities. UZITs learn techniques of grounding, relaxation and restoration in order to be present as they serve. As Roshi Joan Halifax says, Healthcare without self care is sick care.
