3 Introduction The popularity of Yoga as a modality of health, wellbeing and personal development has grown considerably in recent years. Concurrently there has been a growth in popularity of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and traditional and natural health modalities. This has also spawned an interest in Yoga Therapy, which while practised in its homeland India for centuries, is now gaining considerable momentum in Australia and throughout the World. The Australian Association of Yoga Therapists (AAYT) publishes the following definitions of Yoga Therapy and the Yoga Therapist: Yoga Therapy empowers and supports individuals to manage their health using the principles of yoga and applying a range of yoga practices developed within a professional therapeutic relationship. It is about assisting the whole individual, rather than focusing on the condition and the tools used may include asanas (postures), pranayama (breath work), mudras, relaxation, meditation, dietary advice, lifestyle counselling and self-development guidance. A yoga therapist is an experienced yoga teacher with specialised skills and knowledge in the application of yoga in a therapeutic setting. A yoga therapist draws from the principles of yoga and the full range of yoga practices, bio-medical knowledge and assessment skills to establish a professional relationship with clients in developing a self empowering therapeutic program appropriate to their needs. This recognised course provides the opportunity for qualified Yoga Teachers to extend their skills and scope of practice by training to become a qualified Yoga Therapist. This course is recognised by the Australian Association of Yoga Therapists (AAYT). The AAYT is Australia's peak Yoga Therapy representative organisation which has endorsed standards for the practice of Yoga Therapy in Australia, along with a register of practitioners who meet the standards and training programs recognised for providing training in accord with the standards. 3

4 Qualification Outcomes The Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy will provide the practical skills and related scientific and traditional knowledge required to become a competent and effective Yoga Therapist. Graduates will have a high level of competency in all aspects of Yoga Therapy practice, underpinned by an experiential understanding of the meaning and processes of Yoga Therapy. Their training will provide them with the requisite skills and professional standards to take their place as well credentialed professionals in the fields of healthcare, wellbeing and personal development. The Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy qualification will be provided by the Australian Institute of Yoga Therapy (AIYT). Industry Recognition The Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy is an Australian Association of Yoga Therapists (AAYT) recognised qualification. Those who successfully complete the training and achieve the qualification will be deemed to have met the AAYT membership standards and will be eligible to apply to become an AAYT registered Yoga therapist. Registration with the AAYT is regarded as the industry standard by Yoga Australia. This qualification provides 384 nominal hours of graduate training, which can be used toward the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for Yoga Australia members. Program Structure The training program draws from the extensive, authentic traditions of Yoga, along with recognised protocols and practices for contemporary Complementary Medicine practitioners. It has been developed to meet the needs of Yoga Teachers wishing to extend their scope of practice to become Yoga Therapists, who in turn will be able to provide professional, well grounded Yoga Therapy treatment and advice to the broader community. The Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy is delivered in three distinct modules. To achieve the full qualification, all three modules need to be completed. Yoga Teachers who are also qualified and experienced in another health or well-being modality, may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL) by way of up-front assessment for one or more of the modules. The modules are - 1. Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Yoga Therapists 2. Professional Practice for Yoga Therapy 3. Students will be required to have a client information form filled out by each of their case study clients, and then video record themselves conducting an assessment interview and a Yoga Therapy session with both clients. The second client will also have a review session 3 to 4 weeks after the first, which must also be video recorded.
