2 Introduction - Responsible to the Generations Pastor and Pastoral Administrative Advisory Team. - Relates closely with the Generations leadership team. - Position mission: to coordinate all of the ministries for young adults; to recruit, screen, equip and support leaders to accomplish the mission for young adult ministries. Duties of the Young Adult Coordinator Your ministry as the young adult coordinator can be described in the following ways: Chair the college ministries committee - Meet with those who nurture CLiC in Sabbath School and any other young adult ministries of the church. - Set the agenda of this meeting to include the scheduling of all ministry programming, events and trips for the year and a discussion of the Generations curriculum planned for each. - Reduce overlap, eliminate gaps, and coordinate efforts in programs. - Encourage a cooperative spirit in which all of the leaders of the various programs work together. Planning and ideas. - Facilitate creative new ideas. - Plans new programs as church resources permit, assigning both starting and ending dates for each. - Develops with the leadership team a coordinated calendar of ministry events for the entire year, distributing it to every young adult and leader in the church. - Coordinates the ministries to young adults so that leaders see their ministry as part of the Generations team, all working together for the good of the church s children. - Work with the program leaders to draw together an overall plan and budget for a comprehensive program of young adult ministries and present to the Generations pastor. - Works with team leaders to establish and keep current 3 year goals and 1 year benchmarks. Communication You will represent the interests of young adult ministries to - The Generations Pastor and team, Senior Pastor, and Pastoral Administrative Advisory team to keep the concerns and needs of young adults before the church leaders. 3 The church ministries team leaders - Work together with the Generations pastor and team to create opportunities for nurture, witnessing, community service, stewardship, and family life activities for the whole church. Church treasurer - Work with Generations pastor and treasurer to develop an overall budget for the young adult ministries. Information - Provide a calendar listing all young adult activities and events for the local church and see that these events get advertised in the church bulletin and newsletter. - Keep an up-to-date, permanent record of all the young adults in the church and those non-members who have attended outreach programs or visited on Sabbath. - Provide information to your leaders about training events and new resources. Clarify goals - Conduct a needs assessment among the young adults in the congregation and the community helping the leaders of young adult activities understand these needs and set goals for ministry. - Support and encourage the young adult leaders in their programming and evaluate the effectiveness of their programs in meeting the needs. - Support the overall church leadership, while at the same time safeguarding the creativity of the young adults so that they may enjoy spiritual nurture in a comfortable, accepting environment. Coordination of Young Adult Ministries - Recruits volunteers, such as leaders, assistant leaders, teachers, and support staff, for the various ministries; has prospective volunteers fill out the volunteer application, ministry information and background check release forms. - With Generations pastor, screens volunteers by evaluating written applications and by interviewing prospective volunteers. - Equips volunteers by encouraging them to attend conference or other training events and provides adequate resources, materials, and equipment. - Encourages ministry leaders to mentor and lead their team members. - Mentors a promising leader into the role of young adult coordinator. - Implements Generations Curriculum - Reviews and evaluates support resources for content and general suitability. - Makes selections in consultation with the ministry leaders, and presents the selection for a vote of the leadership ministries committee. 4 Time Commitment Approximately 8-10 hours per week. Length of Commitment One or two years, depending on the practice of the local church. Training - Leadership training (on-going). - Volunteer management seminar (recommended). 6 Guidelines for Ministry Volunteers Because our society is filled with pain, problems, and litigation caused by improper conduct of adults working in ministry, it is imperative there be meaningful guidelines for conduct to protect both themselves and those being ministered to. Here are some practical guidelines: 1. NEVER be alone with the opposite sex. 3. Always ask permission before touching anyone anywhere when responding to an injury or problem. 4. Physical and verbal attacks are inappropriate--always. 5. A handshake is the safest display of affection. -The six-month rule. Never recruit a volunteer who has been a member of your church for less than six months. -The glass window rule. Always see that there is glass in or around the door to the rooms in which you might find yourself alone with a student. Otherwise, leave the door open so that you are in full view.
