The baccalaureate degree can be in any major, but because of the science requirements for entrance into the Physical Therapy program, students usually major in biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, or physics. Those students planning to apply to either the Occupational Therapy or the Physical Therapy program should contact the Allied Health Sciences advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences. PRE-CARDIOPULMONARY SCIENCE (Bachelor of Science degree offered through the School of Allied Health Professions at LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport and in New Orleans) This curriculum is designed for students desiring to apply for entry into the professional curricula in Cardiopulmonary Science (Respiratory Therapy and Cardiopulmonary Technology) offered through the LSU Health Sciences Center- Shreveport. The degree program provides the education and training in the areas of prevention, diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of people with heart and lung disorders. In addition, the baccalaureate therapist and technologist is a potential educator or supervisor in Cardiopulmonary departments. The program is a baccalaureate degree program offering a dual Bachelor of Science in both Respiratory Therapy and Cardiovascular Technology. Upon completion of the degree requirements for this program, the LSU Health Sciences Center- Shreveport will award the degree. A student planning to enter this program should contact the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the LSU School of Allied Health Professions, 50 Kings Highway, Shreveport LA 70 during their second semester at LSUS for detailed information concerning admission requirements. The physician assistant is a health care professional who is academically and clinically prepared to provide health and medical services with and under the supervision of a doctor of medicine. This program is a 27.month academic and clinical experience offered at LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport, School of Allied Health Professions. Applicants to the Physician Assistant program are required to have completed,000 hours of work experience in the medical profession. 4 OTHER BIOMEDICAL PREPARATORY PROGRAMS Programs designed to prepare the student for admission to continue in a four-year curriculum at another university are outlined below. These outlines are intended only as guides. The general catalog of the university where a student plans to complete the degree is used to plan the two-year program at LSUS. PRE-MEDICAL AND PRE-DENTAL Students who plan to pursue medicine or dentistry as a profession should select a degree program that will adequately prepare them for entry into a professional school yet provide ample opportunity to pursue additional interests in varied academic disciplines. Most professional schools stress a four-year degree program as the best possible preparation. Students may select any major; however, they and their adviser must be sure that the major program selected includes those courses required by the medical or dental school and offers sufficient free electives to include 0 to 50 hours of science. Students interested in attending medical or dental school usually major in biochemistry, biological sciences, or chemistry. Please see the Pre-medical/Pre-dental advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences for assistance in selecting the necessary course work, taking the MCAT or DCAT, or filing an application for admission to the medical or dental school. PRE-DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM (Bachelor of Science degree offered through the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans) This curriculum is specifically for students that apply for the professional curricula in Pre-Dental Hygiene for a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, Louisiana or other accredited universities. Year One and Two comprises the pre-professional program in Dental Hygiene. These courses will be taken at LSUS. Transfer students from other accredited universities or colleges will have to satisfy these curricular requirements. PRE-NURSING LSUS offers a pre-nursing program that prepares students to enter the professional nursing curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at either Northwestern School of Nursing or LSU Health Sciences Center School of Nursing in New Orleans. Admission to nursing school is on a competitive basis. Applications for admission to the sophomore year must be submitted well in advance of the anticipated date of entrance to complete three years of study. Students are accepted in the fall and spring of each year. Pre-nursing requirements vary with each professional school of nursing, and entrance to each school is competitive. Prospective nursing students should obtain the entrance requirements from each school to which they will seek admission. Electives: A total of 5 hours (5 courses) of electives are required for admission into ULM s College of Pharmacy. These are divided into three categories as follows:. Humanities Electives: Students may take 9 hours of any foreign language, history, religion, speech, philosophy, or literature courses. 2. Fine Arts Electives: A minimum of one -hour course is required. You may select one of the following courses: FA 0: (Introduction to Fine Arts) or MUS 20: (Music Appreciation) Note that acceptable fine arts electives are survey courses in Fine Arts, Art, Dance, Music, or Theatre. Applied courses, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, dancing are not acceptable as fine arts electives.. Social Science Electives: A minimum of one 00-level course ( hours) from any one of these areas is required: Sociology, Geography, or Political Science. The ULM College of Pharmacy s application deadline is currently February st. The PharmCAS application, the College of Pharmacy supplemental application, and the ULM undergraduate admission application are also due February st. PRE-RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY LSUS offers course work to prepare a student to apply for admission in the Radiologic Technology degree at either Northwestern State University, Department of Life Sciences, Natchitoches, LA 797 or the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Monroe, LA The radiologic technologist is a health care professional who will administer x-rays, radioactive substances, and sound waves in the detection and treatment of diseases, evaluation of broken bones, ulcers, tumors and a variety of other physiological conditions. At least two years of college work in specified areas is required to be eligible for admission to the clinical program in radiologic technology.
