1 Leadership Development Program Certificate in Leadership Excellence

2 Program Overview Leadership Development Program Earn a Certificate in Leadership Excellence What do great leaders have in common? They never stop learning. And great leaders see leadership development as a lifelong commitment. The Leadership Development Program offered by Georgia State University s Robinson College of Business is designed for professionals seeking to accelerate their development as leaders. We help good leaders become great. We help great leaders learn new ways to mobilize others to step into the unknown. We help leaders master the tools and techniques of adaptive leadership. This fast-paced and highly-interactive program features today s hottest leadership topics presented by world-class faculty and world-tested executives. They offer thought-provoking content using multimedia presentations, relevant case studies, computer simulations, and small-group exercises. The Leadership Development Program Topics: Day One: Adaptive Leadership: Improving Data Collection and Problem Identification Day Two: Creative Problem Solving: A Deep Dive into the Peer Consulting Methodology Day Three: Strategic Innovation: Integrating Innovation with Strategic Thinking Day Four: Change Management: Featuring the ExperienceChange Simulation If you want to help your organization thrive in a changing world, while at the same time advancing your career, then this program is designed for you. 3 Day One: Adaptive Leadership: The Diagnosis Phase Improving Data Collection and Problem Identification Session Overview: If you want to strengthen your practice of leadership no matter where you sit in your organization, this Leadership Development Program is for you. Adaptive Leadership is a practical leadership framework that helps individuals and organizations adapt and thrive in challenging environments. It is being able, both individually and collectively, to take on the gradual but meaningful process of adaptation. It focuses on how to best diagnose the essential from the expendable. The session facilitator will facilitate focused discussions on Adaptive Leadership which was made famous by Harvard Business School professors Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky. According to Heifetz, the adaptive approach to leadership will help you think and execute amidst changing complexity. With its comprehensive and systematic approach to assessing candidly the situation and yourself, adaptive leadership goes beyond the theory to provide a practical set of stories, techniques, and activities that will help you better assess and address the toughest challenges that lie ahead. Participants Will Discover How To: Effectively implement the key principles of adaptive leadership Utilize the peer consultation technique to better diagnose a leadership dilemma Make your leadership both more effective and more powerful Lead with the courage and skill to challenge the status quo Lead, and survive, through the dangers of change Adapt current activities to face future opportunities and challenges Articulate the difference between a technical problem and an adaptive challenge Meet the challenges of leadership in a complex and rapidly changing world Day Two: Creative Problem Solving: Peer Consultations Developing System-Level and Self-Level Solutions Session Overview: This portion of the program focuses on the actions needed to develop the leadership capacity to operate more creatively and courageously in mobilizing collaboration and innovation across the organization. According to Ron Heifetz, founder of Adaptive Leadership; You are a system as complex as the one you are trying to move forward. To understand your personal system, you have to take stock of many different things your personality, life experiences, cognitive and other skills, and emotional make-up. Understanding the system that is yourself can help you make the personal challenges needed for you to lead adaptive change successfully in your organization. The Leadership Development Program offered by Georgia State University utilizes the Hogan approach to leadership development and assessment. The Hogan Challenge Report describes your characteristic way of interpreting the world and treating subordinates and colleagues while under stress and pressure. It predicts GSU Robinson College of Business Office of Executive Education execed@gsu.edu Page 3

4 career-derailing behaviors that interfere with the ability to build cohesive and high-performing teams which is the hallmark of effective leadership. The Hogan leadership assessment process and reports have been validated by substantial academic research and corporate analysis. Participants Will Discover How To: Utilize the Hogan assessments to strengthen your practice of leadership Identify your contribution to the difficulty name your piece of the mess Find better ways to both compete and collaborate Help others understand that employee morale is a direct function of clarity Manage your default settings loyalties, bandwidth, and personal tuning Identify the value conflicts embedded in the strategy of the organization Build integrated competencies across the organization to create new and sustained value In practicing Adaptive Leadership, you make interventions that are designed to help people in your system (your organization, team, community, or society) address their most critical challenges. Interventions to diagnose and mobilize adaptive work will take the form of process ideas, frameworks and change initiatives. Day Three: Strategic Innovation Leading Innovation and Growth Session Overview: A recent IBM-sponsored survey of 1,541 CEOs, general managers and senior public sector leaders worldwide reported that events, threats and opportunities aren t just coming at us faster or with less predictability; they are converging and influencing each other to create entirely unique situations. These firsts-of-their-kind developments require unprecedented degrees of creativity a more important leadership quality than management discipline or financial acumen. Developing and implementing an innovation strategy is the central task of a leader, whether the CEO of a Fortune 100 company, an entrepreneur, a church pastor, the head of a school, or a government official. In this highly-interactive session, you will learn how to use your unique leadership skills to more effectively develop and execute an innovation strategy. The Strategy Methodologies Presented in this Module Include: Porter s Five Forces Model The Competing Values Framework The IDEO and Stanford Design School Approaches to Innovation Participants Will Discover How To: Develop an innovation strategy Identify and overcome the common barriers to innovation Use proven tools that are useful in the formation an innovation strategy Learn from strategy formation best practices from highly successful and innovative companies Quickly identify when tactics and strategies are out of alignment Ensure that strategic initiatives don t get lost in the organization s systems Improve the leadership skills needed to execute your company s innovation strategy GSU Robinson College of Business Office of Executive Education execed@gsu.edu Page 4

5 The Competing Values Framework (CVF), displayed at left, is a popular business model that helps leaders at all levels better understand how to build and manage an innovative culture. It is the leader s responsibility to understand and manage the natural, and positive, tensions that exist between the competing values. Collaborate: These are the people who value doing things together. Their innovations are incremental and slow. Create: These are the people in the organization who value doing things first. Their innovations are typically breakthrough. Compete: These are the people who value doing things fast. Their innovations are breakthrough and fast. Control: These employees most value doing things right. Their innovations are typically incremental and internally-focused. Day Four: Change Management Featuring ExperienceChange Simulation Session Overview: Excellence requires practice. This concept is well known to athletes, musicians, and doctors, but is rarely applied by business professionals. The ExperienceChange simulation, developed by the firm ExperiencePoint, is an effective way to bring the discipline of perfect practice to professionals interested in mastering change management. Building change capability is both a leadership and organizational imperative. The ability to effectively manage organizational change has become a competitive differentiator. The simulation focuses on Global Tech, a fictional company fraught with realistic competitive pressures and change challenges. Through careful application of change management best practices, the program participants, in small teams, are asked to build stakeholder buy-in and lead the company to success. The teams will be instructed that Global Tech has hired them to save the company. With limited time and resources, the teams must identify the issues, create a change plan, and implement this plan in the face of resistance. Participants Will Discover How To: Identify forces for and against change Apply change leadership best practices Manage and overcome resistance to change Deal with the inevitable surprise that accompany change projects Ensure that change initiatives don t get lost in the organization s systems Better plan, communicate, and implement change ExperienceChange is a multi-media simulation utilizing the change process and steps created by John Kotter in his book Leading Change. The simulation has been used by hundreds of organizations including GE, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, NCR Corporation, the NASA Johnson Space Center, Nokia, and the U.S. Navy.
