President s Perspective Mission. Teaching and learning. Valuing people. Responding to growth. Expanding facilities. Managing resources. These critical areas of focus are the pillars of Lewis University s current strategic plan, Vision 2011: Shaping the Future, Responding to Growth, launched in The work outlined in this plan and the pages that follow speak to a major transformation happening here at Lewis. Our growth is steady, our Mission and core values remain constant, and our quality and effectiveness continue to increase. Our dynamic Mission is at the center of all that we are accomplishing here at Lewis University. It is rooted in the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers who sponsor Lewis University. That commitment to Mission is evident in a variety of faith-based courses stressing ethics and social justice, as well as in special scholarship opportunities to allow greater access to qualified but needy students. It is also shown in the way the faculty explicitly incorporate the Mission into their syllabi and program offerings. Another example is our enthusiastic celebration of diversity, as well as the services that we offer to our regional community through various Christian outreach and educational programs. The recent addition of several endowed Centers of Excellence is another fine demonstration of our effort to engage our students in scholarly activity. With a highly generous $500,000 gift from Lowell Stahl, who is one of the outstanding business leaders in Chicagoland, Lewis is pleased to have launched the Lowell Stahl Center for Real Estate Studies. Lewis is also most grateful to Trustee Emerita Kathryn Kelly and her sister, Rose Mary Perryman, who are the executors for the estate of Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty. They have made an exceptional commitment of $750,000 to begin The Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty Center for Aviation and Health Research. Meanwhile, as our reputation for excellence spreads, applications increase and our student population progressively expands. We also continue to add new and relevant academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lewis is recognized regionally and nationally as one of America s top tier universities in our category of higher education by both US News and World Report and The Princeton Review. As our academic programs and overall enrollment develop, the campus will continue to be transformed to accommodate this expansion. In 2007, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of James and Anne LaGrippe, John and Jeanette D Arcy and the Lewis Foundation, the new $1.7 million James A. LaGrippe Pastoral Center was dedicated. In addition, our fifth regional campus was opened, in Chicago at De La Salle Institute on the dynamic Near South Side, and our Tinley Park Campus was expanded. Additional campus improvements include a very welcomed renovation of the Student Union, thanks to a generous and timely gift from Trustee Edward Prodehl and his wife, Sandy, and a major upgrade of Ryan Hall last summer. Furthermore, as a follow-up to their wonderful gift last year for the 75th Anniversary Time Plaza, Brent and Jean Wadsworth very generously have offered additional support to create a beautiful new performance area and art gallery at the Oremus Fine Arts Center. Moreover, in pursuing our Catholic and Lasallian Mission, Lewis remains firmly committed to ensuring that scholarship aid awards are available for our financially needy students. For instance, nearly $100,000 in net revenue was raised for need-based scholarships at Lewis University s Signum Fidei (Sign of Faith) Celebration last fall. Additionally, Lewis is honored to have received a number of newly endowed scholarships. For example, in 2007 the Joliet chapter of UNICO, the largest Italian American service organization in the United States, established a generously endowed scholarship here at Lewis. Others have been established by Trustee Andy Langert and his wife, Candy, and by retired faculty member, Dr. Paul Kaiser, and his wife, Kathy. Through scholarships and other University funding, Lewis provides approximately $15 million in institutional financial aid, apart from government student grants and loans. In short, Lewis is steadily moving forward in the progressive transformation of our entire educational enterprise, which is ensuring that the University remains faithful to our mission while meeting current and anticipated needs throughout our regional community and for thousands of present and potential students. Everything we undertake is rooted in our Mission, which influences all of our major initiatives. With these objectives always in view, we look forward to a hopeful and vigorous future. Moreover, we invite our students, alumni and the community to participate in our ongoing transformation, as Lewis University continues toward its achievable goal of becoming one of the finest mid-sized Catholic universities in the Midwest. Sincerely, Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President 2007 President s Annual Report 1

Catholic and Lasallian Values inaction Mission Statement Lewis University, guided by its Catholic and Lasallian heritage, provides to a diverse student population programs for a liberal and professional education grounded in the interaction of knowledge and fidelity in the search for truth. Lewis promotes the development of the complete person through the pursuit of wisdom and justice. Fundamental to its Mission is a spirit of association, which develops community in all teaching, learning and service. Lewis University s commitment to our Mission is the passion inspiring everything we do. Our strategic plan, Vision 2011: Shaping the Future, Responding to Growth, launched in 2007, provides an action agenda for bringing the Mission to life in our work and relationships with each other and the broader community. Vision 2011 focuses on six strategic directions: Advancing Mission Advance Lewis University, both regionally and within the Lasallian community, as a Catholic University committed to making our Mission values a lived reality in our classrooms and in our communities. Strengthening Teaching and Learning Foster an excellent teaching and impactful learning environment that significantly strengthens student engagement, scholarship and success. Valuing People Empower the employees of Lewis University, a workplace of choice, by creating a culture that supports each individual s ability to excel. Responding to Growth Achieve the desired academic, demographic, geographic and programmatic mix of students in accordance with the growth objectives of the University and in concert with strategic plans for people, facilities and resources. Expanding Facilities Accommodate the growth of Lewis University by enhancing and expanding facilities and technology to support a 21 st century learning community. Managing Resources Allocate, manage and obtain resources needed to support University strategic goals while maintaining prudent funding and financial management strategies. The vision and clarity of action outlined by Vision 2011 guides Lewis faculty and staff in their daily work. This 2007 Annual Report is illustrative of the exciting work and growth of the University in working toward a major transformation at Lewis. Remaining true to our Catholic and Lasallian heritage, we are creating a 21 st century institution with the capacity to realize our powerful Mission. 2

Advancing Mission At the core of all we do is our Mission, a Mission rooted in the life and work of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and in the tradition of the Christian Brothers. Lewis University views our Mission as a living document which provides us with vision and guidance as we carry out our daily work and succeed as an institution of higher education. Saint John Baptist de La Salle s work began with the education of young boys in France in the 1600s. At the time, education was the province of a select few, those born into wealth. La Salle believed all children, especially those with fewer opportunities and less financial resources, deserved a chance at a better future through education. Lewis University continues this legacy through our scholarships and special programs designed to provide access to a Catholic higher education, and to build a foundation for their future success. Supporting Student Success The SUCCESS Program is an example of Lewis University s commitment to supporting our students by assisting them in meeting the admission requirements of the University. The SUCCESS Program provides ongoing mentoring and academic support services throughout the first year at Lewis, giving students the personal, one-on-one attention that is essential to their success which is a hallmark of a Lewis education. The program begins in the summer prior to the start of the school year with the Bridge Program. This twoweek, residential, intensive college preparatory program is held on campus and provides social and academic activities to help students make the most of their Lewis University experience. The Bridge Program s coursework focuses on: College readiness skills Writing, reading and mathematics Library research orientation Computer/technology literacy Study skills and test taking Introduction to the First Year Common Reader Program The Bridge Program also incorporates vitally important service learning into the curriculum by bringing program participants to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Lewis alumnus Thomas M. Redmond 58 speaks to students in the University s SUCCESS Program. The program assists incoming students with academic preparation and advising to support their success throughout the first year of college. Redmond has been a generous leadership contributor to scholarships for students in the program President s Annual Report 3

VALUING PEOPLE Joan Williams, Director of Advising/Certification Officer in the College of Education, helps students make important decisions about their college careers. Joan loves getting to know students personally and providing them with the guidance to make appropriate choices. Joan has been at Lewis since Everyone has been wonderful to work with. The people I have met, the collegial atmosphere and the diversity of backgrounds create an environment which is professionally stimulating. Lewis has provided Joan with opportunities for growth in other areas as well. She took part in a Lasallian Mission Formation program. It affirmed for me that what I do for the University is what De La Salle and the Christian Brothers were striving for. It made the Mission come alive. In addition, she has served on several Task Forces, has been an ICE (Introduction to College Experience) mentor, and has had the opportunity to travel to Ukraine as a participant of a Partners in Education grant project. Being an employee of Lewis means more than just having a job it means being part of a larger community who embraces a rewarding and meaningful Mission. The SUCCESS Program continues the intensive support of the Bridge Program throughout program participants first year on campus. The Introduction to the College Experience course for freshman is a one credit hour course that introduces students to available resources and helps strengthen their skills. Each class consists of 15 students and a Lewis University faculty member or administrator who serves as the mentor for the course. Additionally, the Success Program provides students with: Peer mentoring Academic advising, registration and career orientation Tutoring and online remediation Study skills workshops Bi-weekly progress meetings with the SUCCESS Program Coordinator Ongoing follow-up with professional staff and faculty Formation of New Employees The Christian Brothers are extremely innovative when it comes to advancing mission. They understand that for their mission and work to continue, they must inspire lay people by teaching them the Lasallian values and mission. Lewis University has developed extensive formation programs and policies that reflect and enact this aspect of the De La Salle Christian Brothers traditions. Lewis hiring practices are a reflection of the deeper University commitment to Mission. This includes: Hiring for Mission workshops for managers and unit heads Mission-focused advertising Position descriptions emphasizing the University s commitment to Mission Mission-related questions as a key part of the interview protocol Individual or small group Mission orientations Appointment letter from the President includes a personal meeting with the President and a discussion of how new employees will contribute to and extend the Lewis Mission New employee Mission-orientation workshops 4

Ongoing Formation of Faculty and Staff Lewis has seen extensive growth in the participation of faculty and staff in formation experiences. With just five participants in 1999, a record 51 employees participated in some kind of formation program in Some examples include: Lasallian University Leadership Program in Rome: Faculty participated in a two-week session in Rome. The life and mission of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and the development of projects that reflect this mission and promote social justice were studied. Lasallian Leadership Institute: An ongoing three-year program which meets for one week in the summer and periodically throughout the year, strives to help participants integrate and promote the Lasallian heritage into their personal and professional lives, and to assist them in becoming catalysts for development of this heritage within their educational communities. Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies in California: A three-year program which meets for two weeks each summer to study the life and times of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, his pedagogy and spirituality. Collegium Summer Institute: People of diverse backgrounds, faiths, and disciplines meet to discuss the sources and implications of a Christian academic vocation. Institute for Catholic Administrators in Higher Education: Some of the nation s outstanding scholars and practitioners meet to address issues in Catholic higher education. In 2007, Lewis increased opportunities for the formation and development of our employees by creating and implementing the Exploring Lasallian Mission (ELM) Program. More than 40 Lewis faculty and staff participated in this inaugural experience over the course of four half-day sessions. ELM was designed for employees who are unable to attend the more lengthy and formal national and regional Lasallian formation programs like those described above. Created by the Office of Mission in conjunction with members of the Mission and Heritage Council, ELM is an experience that builds upon what faculty and staff already know and appreciate about the Lasallian educational Mission of Lewis University and advances it further. In Service to Others A key pillar of the Lasallian mission and the Mission of Lewis University is the concept of service. The teaching and learning programs at Lewis represent one critical aspect of service, but we believe service must go beyond the education and the confines of our campus. The list of volunteer opportunities for students, faculty and staff is extensive and continues to grow: Best Buddies Big Brothers/Big Sisters Br. David Darst Social Justice Retreat Chicago Food Depository Chicago Urban Program Plunge Christmas Giving Tree 2008 Habitat for Humanity Hunger Week Misericordia Heart of Mercy MorningStar Mission The Night Ministry University Mission to Bolivia University Mission to the Philippines Lewis University is committed to advancing our Mission supporting students, faculty, staff and the local and global community are critical pieces of extending the legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and the tradition of the Christian Brothers President s Annual Report 5

Our Mission in Action The Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BBBS) program is a nationally known and respected organization that provides after school tutoring and mentoring to at-risk youth in 2nd 5th grades. The program first came to Lewis University in the mid 1990s. Initially pairing 18 children with 18 Lewis student mentors, the program now includes 57 children and 57 Lewis student mentors. Children and their Lewis student mentors talk about school and share experiences but mostly, they spend time together and develop a bond that can have a lasting effect on a child. Martha Villegas Miranda In keeping with the University s Lasallian Mission, formation and training of student mentors is a key component of our campus BBBS program. Lewis was recognized in 2007 for this work when Martha Villegas Miranda was named Coordinator of the Year for On-Site Mentoring. University Mission to Bolivia: Over 60 Lewis University students and staff have participated in this life changing experience. Participants travel to Bolivia for two weeks and work in orphanages, daycare centers, hospitals and with the children of the streets. Students serve the community in many significant ways while learning about the beautiful indigenous culture of this country. Remarks by 2007 Lasallian volunteer in Bolivia, Sophia Cartagena, speak to the significance of this particular volunteer experience and the power of serving others in general: Where do I begin? This past mission trip to Bolivia was my third. It was a chance to take time and really enjoy what God has blessed us with. Not only was the view amazing wherever I stood, but the people of Bolivia added so much more beauty. They were welcoming, warm, and full of unconditional love. I never felt like a stranger when I was in Bolivia. I always felt like I was part of a family. Before my first trip to Bolivia, my relationship with God seemed almost nonexistent. When I was there, I could see God in everything and everybody.

TEACHING President s Annual Report Strengthening Teaching and Learning Teaching and learning is the fundamental work of any institution of higher education. At Lewis University, we go much deeper by infusing teaching and learning with the values of the Lasallian mission and the Christian Brothers tradition. Our Vision 2011, the strategic plan launched in 2007, calls upon Lewis to: Foster an excellent teaching and impactful learning environment that significantly strengthens student engagement, scholarship and success. Many experiences among faculty, staff, and students provide opportunities to extend the Mission through teachable moments. We are deliberate and thoughtful in our teaching and aspire to reach each student and help them to learn and grow and build the foundation of a successful future. Examples of Lewis University s work to strengthen teaching and learning are evident in our accreditation process, Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP), and in our Centers of Excellence. AQIP Reaccreditation Update The AQIP reaccreditation process is one that promotes the concept of continuous self improvement. Lewis University began its process toward reaccreditation in the fall of 2004 to determine what matters most to us as an institution of higher education. We are currently progressing toward the 2011 reaffirmation of accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission through a variety of processes. Three action projects are entering their third and final year. Student Learning Outcomes: The Project Team will present a series of training events to enable Lewis University to demonstrate evidence of student learning in a program that is participative and worthwhile, with the assistance of the Higher Learning Commission. Communication and Collaboration: The Project Team group has pilot tested new software in the Blackboard platform that will enable the University to have a repository of information available, as well as other features such as an electronic town hall and a wiki tool that will allow groups of people to collaborate in the production of documents. This year s work includes plans for acquainting employees with the software and training in its use. Campus Facilities: The Project Team has explored how decisions are made regarding campus facilities during this time of growth. In the upcoming year, they will help the University develop a system whereby stakeholders will be able to review facilities planning documents, provide input, and receive feedback as part of the facilities planning process. The Systems Portfolio document, which has involved at least 100 employees, will culminate in a final report to the Higher Learning Commission. It identifies our current systems and processes in nine categories and demonstrates how we are becoming an institution of evidence, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE In keeping with our Mission and commitment to continuous strengthening of teaching and learning, Lewis University continues to expand Centers focusing on specific areas of study and professional pursuits. These Centers model the University s commitment to best practices in teaching while providing opportunities for faculty, staff and students to engage in intellectually challenging projects and research that contribute to their disciplines and/or the surrounding community, and extend learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. The Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty Center for Aviation and Health Research With the generous gift of $750,000 from Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty, the Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty Center for Aviation and Health Research was officially launched at the end of The Center was established to promote scholarship and innovation at Lewis University in the fields of health and aviation and to create opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships with business and the community. In 2007 its first year the Center has posted significant accomplishments including: The Doherty Center Structure was Established: Two Co-Directors Dr. Pamela A. Martyn-Nemeth, Associate Professor, College of Nursing and Health Professions and Professor Michael K. Streit of the Aviation Department were named to oversee Center activities. An administrative Steering Committee was established to facilitate the development and implementation of the structure and processes for Center activities. A Coordination committee provided guidance regarding applicant eligibility, proposal development guidelines and application review procedures. Faculty Development: Faculty involved with the Doherty Center were sent to conferences and education programs in the areas of research center development, strategies for engaging students in research, proposal development and review. Establishment of Proposal Application and Review Process: Funding eligibility criteria were operationally defined and established. Proposal application requirements were developed. Proposals were evaluated for their potential to advance or disseminate knowledge related to the fields of health or aviation based on intellectual merit, focus and feasibility, impact on education and community outreach, ability to advance goals and mission of the Doherty Center and benefit the Lewis community. 8

Request for Proposals Culminates in Three Funded Projects: A call for proposals was sent to faculty in April Three proposals were funded that have the potential to advance scientific knowledge in areas significant to healthcare. Two studies in the fields of microbiology propose to investigate how bacteria establish and survive to promote potentially deadly infections: Temperature as a Factor in the Formation of Biofilms, by Dr. Jerry H. Kavouras The Methcillin-Resistant Staphylococus Aureus (MRSA) Monitoring Project by Dr. James V. Rago The third study Computer Simulation of Emergency Department Surge Capacity by Dr. Marne Bailey and Dr. Raymond Klump, seeks to establish computer software with mathematical models that can simulate emergency room surge capacity. Development of these models could be beneficial should a disaster occur. Establishment of the Doherty Center has been transformational to the culture at Lewis University. It has provided a new way of thinking about student learning and engagement; new opportunities for collaboration with colleagues; and a new definition of what scholarship is at Lewis University. This is the beginning of a very stimulating and productive journey ahead. The Lowell Stahl Center for Real Estate Studies at Lewis University The Stahl Center was made possible due to a generous $500,000 donation from Lowell Stahl in order to meet a number of goals including: 1. Support a variety of educational activities to address the contemporary needs of the real estate industry. 2. Serve as a catalyst to encourage and support students interested in the field of real estate. 3. Provide career placement assistance to students seeking to work in real estate. 4. Provide opportunities for alumni in real estate to network with each other and to serve as mentors to our students. 5. Develop programs to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals already in the field through activities such as seminars in real estate. 6. Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with leaders in the industry which will enrich student experiences, strengthen faculty expertise and provide relevant programs and activities for real estate professionals. 7. Carefully explore academic degrees or specializations in real estate. Success and vision go hand in hand. A person can want good things to happen, but having direction and vision are the true driving forces. I received the direction and vision I needed years ago when Brother Leo Forgette, FSC, gave me a scholarship to the Christian Brothers high school where he taught. Similarly, I challenged Lewis University to provide that direction and vision for men and women interested in careers in commercial real estate. The Lowell Stahl Center for Real Estate Studies will enable those in real estate and those wanting to enter the industry to learn about and focus on what is a demanding and rewarding career in commercial real estate. In doing so, it will provide the vision that may ignite success in the lives of many students. The Center co-sponsored a Will County Center for Economic Development symposium on January 10, 2008, that brought together nearly 500 professionals, students and faculty. The symposium launched the Center broadly to the real estate community and began to identify critical content areas worthy of research and project development. Lowell I. 12 EARNING Center for Ministry and Spirituality Each of these Centers position Lewis University as a leader in their respective field. Taken together, however, they exhibit the dedication of the University to our students and our Mission of ensuring the highest quality teaching and learning. The mission of the Center for Ministry and Spirituality is to respond to the educational and formational needs of individuals engaged in Christian pastoral ministries, to provide quality learning opportunities that are accessible and affordable as well as experiential, and to promote a dynamic and collaborative educational environment combing theoretical study with practice application in a community of faith. In 2007, the Center for Ministry and Spirituality sponsored a number of events that further their mission. Specifically, these events included: 6th Annual Signum Fidei Lecture Young Adults: A New Age in the Catholic Church: A discussion of young adults and the important role that they play in the Catholic Church, as well as the challenges the that Church faces in regard to meeting the needs of this growing group of Catholics. A Ruby Among Stones: A Christian Perspective on the Prophet Muhammad: A comparative discussion of Muhammad of Islam and Jesus of Christianity. Symposium on Roman Catholic Material Culture: A three-day event that looked at the relationship between art, other material objects and faith. Lewis University History Center: Studies in Urban and Catholic History of the Upper Midwest Just approved in the summer of 2007, the History Center will offer high profile programs and engender engagement with the community, position itself as a leading program among peer institutions, and become a hub of scholarly, applied activity for students, scholars and community members. 10

GROWTH *Named a 2008 Best College in the Midwestern Region by The Princeton Review Responding to Growth Within the last five years, Lewis has seen tremendous growth: Close to 1,000 additional students have joined our ranks, bringing us to a student body of 5,327, projected to increase to 6,500 by New Undergraduate programs in fields very much in demand have been added including Aviation Security, Contemporary Global Studies, Fire Services Administration, Forensic Criminal Investigation and Philosophy of Law. New Graduate programs have been added and include Adult Nurse Practitioner, Aviation and Transportation, English as a Second Language Endorsement, a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership (first doctoral program at Lewis), Information Security, Finance and Management. Major campus renovations include new buildings and additional campuses. The change at Lewis has been so significant that the word growth really does not capture all that is happening the University is undergoing a transformation. Lewis is not just getting bigger, it is evolving and becoming a different kind of place and yet much stays the same. A Best Midwestern College The core Mission and values of the University are as powerful a force as ever perhaps even stronger. We have maintained our sense of purpose and place and created new and more extensive opportunities to extend and deepen our Mission. We have increased the number of students while maintaining diversity and our commitment to supporting students whose financial needs could be a barrier to higher education. We have increased our academic profile while still providing conditional admission to students with potential, but who need additional support. The catalyst for change at Lewis comes both from within our ongoing work to realize our Mission and from external resources. Lewis University s main campus is located in Will County, a region southwest of Chicago that is experiencing rapid growth and change. We are responding to and leading this regional expansion by providing leadership, intellectual capital and service, which has, in turn, fostered some of our growth. Additionally, recognition from outside of the University including U.S.News and World Report and The Princeton Review continues to spark additional interest in the University. Our alumni who continue to achieve recognition in their personal and professional lives add value to the worth of a Lewis degree. 4,470 4,848 5,065 5,290 5, Total Enrollment Lewis University 2007 President s Annual Report 11

Expanding Facilities Buildings are much more than bricks, mortar and mechanicals. At Lewis, our buildings are much more about the people and life that exists within them. In response to the University s growth, but also as a symbol of our transformation, the campus itself is a critical focus of our Vision 2011 strategic plan. With major renovation and conversion of existing buildings and construction of new buildings, Lewis is creating the physical space to support and nurture our values as we inspire and guide the lives of our students. This work to sustain and expand our campus would not be possible without the vision and leadership of a few dedicated benefactors. Their support illustrates the critical link between our Mission and work and the place in which both are carried out. Lewis University is a gem within the county just being realized, said Ed Prodehl, Lewis Board of Trustees member. With Ed and his wife Sandy s leadership gift, Lewis has beautifully renovated the Student Union. Mr. Prodehl continued, We are bringing more of a campus life to our students through the emphasis on facilities. With our scholarships, we provide access to the University for many who might not otherwise have this opportunity. When they arrive, we must offer them the very best programs and facilities possible it s really all part of how we carry out the values of the Christian Brothers and the Lasallian tradition. We take seriously our Mission and constantly reach further to realize that Mission in everything we do including the buildings we build. 12

Brent Wadsworth and his wife Jean were similarly moved. We were honored to be able to help Lewis with the enhancement of the Oremus Fine Arts Center, Mr. Wadsworth said. Lewis is a wonderful service to the Will County area, where I grew up. The University is a small part of the world supporting good people. Our facilities are home to the hopes and dreams of our students and the values that sustain us. Growing and enhancing our campus is another way Lewis is striving to realize the full potential of our Mission and Lasallian tradition. Mr. Wadsworth was inspired to write a poem about the bridge between the physical growth of the Lewis campus and its broader Mission. On the dedication of the Time Plaza Anniversary Clock in 2006, Mr. Wadsworth wrote, Knowledge, Fidelity and Wisdom in search of truth, Justice and Association for Lewis it does suit President s Annual Report 13

Scholarships and Endowed Funds What is an endowment? Endowed funds differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving. Instead of the entire amount of the gift being spent outright, the total amount of the gift is invested. Each year, only a portion of the invested income earned is spent while the remainder is added to the original principal. An endowment is a perpetual gift because only the interest is used to support University scholarships while the principle continuously grows. Always equated with excellence and long-term strength, endowments are absolutely essential if we are to remain true to our Mission to provide access to students who may not otherwise be able to afford a private, Catholic education. When the Joliet Chapter of UNICO, a local chapter of the largest Italian- American service organization in the United States, approached Lewis University to establish a $25,000 Endowed Scholarship, they sent a clear message of endorsement of our Mission and work. The Joliet Chapter of UNICO was founded in January 1957 by a local group of Italian-American business Pictured from left to right, seated are: Mrs. Ann Rubino, Mrs. Rose Lenhart, Mrs. Marilyn Tarizzo, and Dr. Richard Tarizzo. Standing from left to right are: Dr. Paul Rubino, Mr. Charles Lenhart, Rev. Michael Valente, Brother James Gaffney, FSC, Lewis University President, and Dr. August Martinucci. leaders as a service organization to raise funds to give back to the local community. UNICO (Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Community and Opportunity) and its mission were established to call attention to the contribution of Italian-Americans in the fields of art, literature, music and science by supporting local community charities. Each year a community leader was honored at Joliet UNICO s Citizen of the Year Banquet and an annual $4,000 scholarship was awarded to a local high school senior in support of education among other contributions to local charities. In September of 2007, the Joliet Chapter of UNICO decided to resign as a local chapter and liquidate its funds, and they wanted to make a lasting impact on education locally. The Joliet Chapter of UNICO Endowed Scholarship to Lewis University allows them to make this impact while partnering with a university whose mission and values mirror that of UNICO and their past efforts in stewardship. The competitive Scholarship will be offered annually to a well qualified Lewis student of Italian decent with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, a record of community involvement and financial need. The effort to establish the UNICO Endowed Scholarship at Lewis was headed by Chapter President Richard Tapella and by long-time UNICO member and Lewis benefactor Dr. Paul Rubino. Tapella said, We are proud of our achievement as Unicans and the legacy we leave in this community and to the many we have helped both directly and indirectly through the years of stewardship and promoting education excellence. And those of us at Lewis are grateful and humbled by UNICO s show of faith in us, our Mission and our work, by extending their legacy through the UNICO Endowed Scholarship. 14

From University Advancement Dear Friend of Lewis University: As a Catholic and Lasallian institution of higher education, Lewis University has an unwavering commitment to the discovery of truth, the advancement of excellence, and the realization of individual and spiritual growth. We are Mission driven. Our Lasallian character and commitment distinguishes us from other colleges and universities. We have a vision for the future, and to realize that, we rely upon your partnership. The true strength of Lewis University is found in the people who have sacrificed to make this institution so vibrant and distinctive. Our many alumni, friends, and benefactors have provided the margin of excellence crucial in today s highly competitive marketplace for higher education. I offer my heartfelt gratitude for this commitment and support. Nearing the completion of my first full year at Lewis, I am honored to work in cooperation with our many friends and contributors. Never before have I experienced such deep and unwavering commitment to educational excellence and advancement of mission found in the Catholic faith. As much as we appreciate the value of the philanthropic support we receive, there is also no greater joy than seeing the faces of incoming students and parents come to life as they enroll here to study. We remain committed to ensuring that future generations of students and families will have access to the high quality, relevant, Catholic education that we offer at Lewis University. To be successful in that regard, we must: Continue to grow the scholarships and financial support we provide for an increasingly diverse student population. We must never allow financial constraints to limit access. We must remain open and accessible to those who seek to learn in the Lasallian tradition. Make investments in facilities and technology that will help us achieve widespread recognition for quality. We seek to be known as one of the finest, mid-sized, comprehensive Catholic universities in the Midwest. Just as we appreciate the value of your past support, so also would it be our honor and pleasure to work with you and others to make possible a future of continued excellence and distinction at Lewis University. I cordially invite you to join with us. Now is the time to make a commitment and take action to support our Mission. Dan Allen Vice President for University Advancement 2007 President s Annual Report 15
