2 The Certificates For more than 40 years, the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging has provided training, credentials and support to aging service professionals and those looking for a career working with older adults. Brookdale is the oldest and largest Gerontology Center in the New York metropolitan area, and has been training professionals since All of our program faculty are leaders and practitioners in the gerontological field who draw upon first hand clinical experience with older adults and their families. A Certificate from the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging is a professional credential recognized by practitioners in the gerontological field. Coursework ensures that those entering, or currently in the field of aging have the necessary education and appropriate skills to meet the requirements of practice in a variety of service settings. Our commitment to our students and to our mission has led to the establishment of a NEW and REVISED certificate program. Our new program combines our top notch faculty and commitment to excellence with the need for a more streamlined and consistent educational experience. Admission Educational Requirements Certificate in Aging (26 units): A Bachelor's degree or higher in any field of study. Certificate in Geriatric Care Management (36 units): A Bachelor s degree in any field of study with four years of paid experience in human services; OR Master s degree in any field of study with two years of paid experience in human services. All students wishing to enroll in any Certificate Program course must fill out the attached form: For questions regarding enrollment criteria, please contact Randy Lin at (212) or at randy.lin@hunter.cuny.edu Unit Designation Brookdale Center Certificate Program units are NOT college credits. Students should retain all course syllabi and transcripts if they plan to apply for credit at other schools. Letters documenting course completion and unit awards are provided upon request. CLE, CEU or other continuing education credits are not awarded unless otherwise noted. Non-Certificate Students Students who do not intend to pursue a Certificate may enroll in classes on a space available basis. Class Schedules Brookdale currently offers classes during the Fall and Spring semesters. Fall semester begins in September and runs through the end of December. Spring semester run from February through June. 2
3 Prices and Registration The full program cost for a Certificate in Aging is $2500. The program fee includes all required courses plus unlimited elective courses during the period of matriculation (2 semesters). The full program cost for a Certificate in Geriatric Care Management is $3600. Fee includes all program courses and electives during the period of matriculation (3 semesters) Individual elective courses may be signed up for without being enrolled in the full program. Please note that current Brookdale Certificate Program students receive priority in registration. The fee for elective programs vary. Please check course brochure for dates and fees. Cancellation and Refund Policy If Brookdale makes the decision to cancel a class, students will be credited the full class price plus any registration fees. If a student withdraws from a class, they will be refunded the full price, minus any registration fees prior to the first day of class. After the first day of class, no refund will be issued. Attendance Requirements One Class Course Two Class Course Three Class Course Four Class Course Five or more 100% Attendance 100% Attendance 2 out of 3 classes 3 out to 4 classes 80% Attendance PLEASE NOTE: It is the student s responsibility to confirm class times and locations. In the event of an absence it is the responsibility of the student to approach faculty regarding a possible make-up for missed classes or for lateness BUT it is the faculty s decision whether or not a make up will be possible. In the event of inclement weather students will be notified via and/or by checking our website. 3
4 Course Work Students are responsible for all assigned course work and readings. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that all work is completed and, where necessary, delivered to the instructor. Failure to complete required assignements in a timely manner will result in credits not being issued. Fees and tuition will not be refunded. Classroom Assignments All courses are held at 2180 Third Avenue unless otherwise noted. Classroom assignments will be posted prior to the first date of the course. At this time we do not offer long distance learning courses or any web based course work. Grades Brookdale Center Certificate Programs have a pass/fail grading system. Faculty award units based on class participation, attendance and the completion of any faculty assignments. No credit or reimbursement will be provided for failed courses. Faculty Assignments Faculty assignments vary by course but can include reading assignments, papers, class presentations and/or application assignments (applying something learned outside the classroom e.g. doing a client assessment.) Assignments must be completed within a reasonable amount of time, according to deadlines given by faculty (or no more than one month after course completion.) Some courses require textbooks. Certificate in Aging This certificate provides continuing education to students looking to broaden their clinical knowledge and skillset in the field of gerontology and to better provide services and support for the geriatric population. Coursework will examine social and psychological factors in physical and mental illness from diagnosis to treatment. This certificate is designed for students with a Bachelor s degree (in any field of study) or higher who are either curently working in the field of aging or looking to transition into the field of aging. Students take 2 core tracks, 1 in each semester. In addition students take 6 elective units of their choosing. Electives may be taken from any of Brookdale s course offerings. Track 1 (Fall 2015) Working with an Aging Client This 10 week course will run from NOTE: This course is required for all certificates. Students who have already completed 905, 910 and 500MH are exempt. Track 2 (Spring 2016) Understanding Client Needs This 10 week course will run from February 2016 May
5 Certificate in Geriatric Care Management Prepares health practitioners and clinicians for the real-world Geriatric Care Management practice. Coursework will examine the clinical and diagnostic services in the field of gerontology as well as the business management and development of a Geriatric Care Management practice. To be eligible for our Certificate in Geriatric Care Management, students must hold either a Bachelor s degree plus 4 years of human service experience or a Master s degree in any field of student other than social work or nusing plus 2 years of human service experience. A Master s in Social Work or Nusing satisfies the experience requirement. In addition to completing the above mentioned 2 tracks students in our Geriatric Care Management Program must complete a third track. This track will run for 10 weeks and have 2 components. The first 6 weeks will focus on key aspects of business development and management for Geriatric Care Managers. The remaining 4 weeks will be a peer advisory group where students will discuss actual cases or case studies. FALL 2015 COURSE LIST Track 1 (Fall 2015) Working with an Aging Client This 10 week course will run from Mondays October 5 through December 15. Course will run one night a week. This course reviews social and psychological factors as they contribute to physical and mental wellness and illness in old age. Students will hone their clinical skills by detailing relationships between diagnosis and treatment. Case material for study and discussion will be provided by the class. This class is required for all students. NOTE: This course is required for all certificates. Students who have already completed 905, 910 and 500MH are exempt DATES & TIMES: Thursdays, October 8 December 17 (NO CLASS THURSDAY NOVEMBER 26 or DECEMBER 10). 6:00pm 9:00pm FACULTY: Randi Anderson, JD, LCSW, ACSW, C-ACWCM, CGCM, OSC LOCATION: Brookdale Conference Room, 8 th floor, Silberman Building, 2180 Third Avenue (at 119 th Street) FEE: This class is included as part of both the Certificate Program in Aging and in the Certificate Program in Geriatric Care Management. If signing up for this course only fee is $1100. Effective Communication - This 3 week elective course counts as a 3 unit elective for all certificiates. This 3 week course offers will help students develop skills and strategies for discussing tough topics with the older adult and their families and caregivers. Lecture, class discussion and role play will be used. Elder Abuse How to Recognize it and What to do if you suspect it This one night (3 hour) course will introduce students to the various types of elder abuse, discuss the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and discuss strategies for assisting a potential victim.
