2 Program Overview Philosophy Seattle University, in partnership with Puget Sound Educational Service District, has created an innovative program, the Special Education Endorsement Academy (Academy), that allows educators to complete the coursework designed to prepare teachers to pass the state examination for endorsement requirements. Our Academy s coursework will be completed in one year, and focuses on both the content and the pedagogy necessary to be an effective teacher. The advantage for teachers is that while the program has been designed and the courses outlined jointly by college and the PSESD, the actual teaching will be done by lead teachers and coaches from the region. This means that while supervision and assistance will come from Seattle University, instruction will be firmly rooted in the classrooms where teachers will employ their new skills. This year s academy offers participating teachers the additional opportunity to begin working towards the College of Education s Master s degree in Special Education. If admitted to the graduate degree program, teachers can apply all 24 academy credits to the 48-credit degree program (a $319 per-credit savings on 24 credits). Interested teachers will register for graduate-level credit, pay an additional percredit fee and complete a graduate-level assignment for each course. Location All courses are held online, two evenings a week. Each class session consists of a 1.5 hour synchronous session supplemented by 1.5 hours of asynchronous work. Additional homework is assigned for each class session. You must have access to a computer and Internet connection that meet the minimum requirements for connection to the course platform as determined by SU s Office of Information Technology. General Academy Information Special Education Endorsement for Certified Teachers Steps to an endorsement in Special Education 1. Take 24 Professional Learning (post-baccalaureate or graduate) credits offered two nights a week over the course of one year. Please refer to the course calendar for specifics (see pages 9-10). 2. Prepare to take and pass the state mandated examination in Special Education. 3 Application Process Early applications are due by April 15, Late applications are due by August 5, Applicants must submit the academy registration form and a copy of their valid Washington State teaching certificate. Post-baccalaureate or graduate-level track must be indicated at the time of application and cannot be changed during the program. Graduatelevel students must complete the Special Education Master s program within 6 years of the first academy course in order to apply credits to the graduate program requirements. Academy fees area nonrefundable. Participation Details Attendance Each course and session progressively builds on each other to assist participants to successfully complete the Academy and to teach in a school. With the structure and schedule of the Academy, regular, timely attendance is vital to participant success. Participants must attend all course sessions. If a participant must miss any portion of a session, the instructor must be notified prior to the absence. The instructor will provide the work required to make up the missed session. If you have extenuating circumstances that will cause you to miss multiple sessions, please contact the program coordinator at Seattle University as soon as possible to discuss your participation in the program Seattle University / PSESD 3

4 Grading and Assignments All courses will be graded on an A, B, F and N scale. During the first session of each course, participants will be provided specific requirements for obtaining each available grade. Outside assignments will be included in course work as a regular aspect of independent practice, reflection and implementation activities. Participants interested in receiving graduate credit will indicate graduate credit at the time of registration and will complete an additional graduate-level assignment for each course. Graduate Credit Option Students who are planning on enrolling in courses for graduate credit, must elect to enroll in those courses at the time of registration for the academy. Students who select the post-baccalaureate courses are not permitted to switch to graduate-level courses after the first day of the endorsement academy. Students who enroll in the graduate-level courses but wish to switch to the post-baccalaureate courses after the academy has begun, must complete the Endorsement Academy Withdrawal Form (available from the program coordinator) for the graduate-level courses. Registration fees are nonrefundable. If a student does not complete the additional graduate assignment for a graduate course for which she/he is registered, the highest grade the student can receive for that course is a B-. Graduate assignments are due three months after the start of a course. A calendar reflecting the graduate assignment due dates will be provided to all students enrolling in graduate courses at the start of the academy. Students enrolling in graduate courses will be given a preliminary grade of N until their graduate assignments have been graded. The grade received on the graduate assignment will be calculated as a portion of the overall grade received for the course. Admission to the Master s Degree in Special Education at Seattle University is not guaranteed to participants who complete the Special Education Academy s graduate courses. Students must apply to the MA program directly. If admitted to the MA program in Special Education, all 24 graduate-level academy courses completed with a B or higher grade will apply to that master s degree. Textbooks and Supplies Participants will purchase textbooks and supporting materials. A list of required texts will be provided upon admission to the program. Computer Requirements Participants must have regular, reliable access to the Internet and a working computer that meets our minimum standards. 5 Inclement Weather and Emergency Communication System As a guideline, Seattle University s inclement weather schedule will be followed for all course sessions. An emergency and phone list will be created to allow for instructor communication to participants in case of last minute changes or conditions that arise. In the event of a cancellation, the class meeting will be rescheduled. Refund policy There are no refunds for the Academy once payment is made for the program. 7 Introduction to Disability, Language and Literacy COURSE DESCRIPTIONS This course is an introduction to special education including an overview of historical/legal foundations, individualized education programs (IEPs), and exceptionalities in childhood and adolescence. Course content includes theories, practice and laws pertaining to identifying and supporting students with disabilities including English language learners. An emphasis is placed on understanding the nature of learning disorders and awareness of the research and resources pertaining to language acquisition versus language disorders. Family collaboration and the development of self-determination skills for K-12 students with disabilities is an important component of this course. Multicultural/Multilingual Students and Learning This course is an introduction to learning disorders for students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Topics covered perception of disabilities across cultures, reasons for the overrepresentation of various racial and ethnic groups in special programs, the effects of second language acquisition on current classroom learning, and the assessment and intervention for culturally and linguistically diverse students with learning difficulties. Language, Literacy and Numeracy: Assessing and Teaching Students with Learning Differences This course examines the methods and curriculum demonstrated to be effective for students with learning disorders. Topics will include understanding of language and reading acquisition, development and understanding of numeracy skills, and how to assess these skills and identify areas of need. Students will learn culturally appropriate methods to gather data and assess students needs to identify and develop interventions. Positive Behavior Support This course is an introduction to effective inclusive teaching, behavior management, applied behavioral analysis, functional assessment, and interventions. Topics include school-wide positive behavior support, classroom and individual assessment and support. Students will learn to facilitate efficient development, implementation and evaluation of behavior support plans in ways that consider and support cultural and linguistic differences of K-12 students and their families. Individual Educational Assessment 4 Credits This course provides a comparison of various methods used in the evaluation of learning problems. It includes the selection, administration and analysis of assessment methods and interpretation of results linked to interventions. Teaching Students with Autism & Low Incidence Disabilities 2 Credits This course provides an examination of characteristics of students with autism and low incidence disabilities with an emphasis on effective trends and practices in their education. Prerequisite: SPED 540 or permission of instructor. Transition Services: Preparing for Life after High School This course includes transition assessments, development of courses of study, identifying postsecondary goals, linkages to adult service agencies, understanding of post-school outcomes for youth with disabilities and the importance of self-determination and self-advocacy in partnership with community and family members from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds Seattle University / PSESD 7

8 Capstone: Special Education This course provides candidates the opportunity to bring together major components of the program, culminating in a final project that is based upon a case study. Candidates will demonstrate skills in assessing students with disabilities, developing an IEP, designing small group and individual instruction and working with K-12 teachers, administrators and family members. Professional and personal reflection will serve to integrate theory and application in leadership, action-based research and as an expert practitioner in the field in this final course Seattle University / PSESD 8
