3 Tradition and modernity: ASH Berlin The Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, looks back over a long tradition: in 2008 it celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. The history of ASH Berlin is closely bound up with both the development of modern social work and the life s work of Alice Salomon. Its roots stretch back into the 19th century, when systematic training in social work was first established in Germany. In 1908, Alice Salomon ( ) founded the Social School for Women [Soziale Frauenschule] in Berlin-Schöneberg, whose two-year interdenominational programme became a model for the establishment of other schools and greatly influenced the development of social work in Germany. Already in its early years, the school attached great importance to interdisciplinarity, close linkages between theory and practice and an international orientation principles that remain important at ASH Berlin today. In 1933, with the start of the Nazi dictatorship, the Social School for Women dismissed its Jewish members and abandoned its emancipatory orientation and focus on social justice. Alice Salomon was expelled from Germany in After liberation from the Nazi dictatorship, the school was able to take up its work once again in June of 1945, drawing on its training programme from the 1920s and looking to democratic American models for guidance.

4 In connection with the educational reforms of the late 1960s, ASH Berlin was expanded in 1971 into the University of Applied Sciences for Social Work and Social Pedagogy [Fachhochschule für Sozialarbeit und Sozialpädagogik], a transformation that involved its integration of the Catholic Helene Weber Academy [Helene-Weber-Akademie] and the Workers Welfare Seminar [Seminar der Arbeiterwohlfahrt]. The University of Applied Sciences has born the name of Alice Salomon since Within the context of the development of new training concepts and structures, a second programme of study, Health and Social Care Management, was set up in In 1999, the first masters programme, Intercultural Conflict Management, was created. The first bachelors programmes followed in 2004: Early Childhood Education and Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy. ASH Berlin took on a pioneering role in Germany through its introduction of these programmes and the associated establishment of those professional fields as academic disciplines. In 1998, ASH Berlin relocated to a newly constructed building in Berlin s Hellersdorf district. With that move to a district in eastern Berlin, a new aspect of the formerly divided city s history was absorbed into the institution s biography. The year 2001 saw the opening of the Alice Salomon Archives in the institution s historical rooms in Schöneberg and the grant of the first Alice Salomon Award. The award, presented every two years, honours individuals who have made an outstanding contribution towards the emancipation of women and the development of social work and who are continuing the work of Alice Salomon under the conditions of the present day.

5 Innovative programmes and further-education offerings opening exciting career perspectives The Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, (ASH Berlin) is a researchintensive, practice-oriented educational institution in Berlin-Hellersdorf. Through its interdisciplinary programme offerings and its position in an international network of collaborative research projects and partner educational institutions, ASH Berlin offers a diverse range of professional and further-education perspectives for careers in social work, health and early education. Its degree programmes include four bachelors programmes and two consecutive masters programmes (which build on ASH bachelors programmes) in the fields of social work, health and early childhood education. Nine advanced-degree masters programmes and the many offerings at the Centre for Further Education are open to persons from a wide range of professions. ASH Berlin attaches great importance to the high quality of its instruction, for students and their successful education and training are the main focuses here. Through our quality management system, regular instructional evaluations and the discourse involving all members of the university (on University Day, for instance), we promote the active participation of everyone associated with our institution. In this way, we create an inspirational climate of learning and instruction for students and the university s teachers and staff, from Germany and abroad. ASH Berlin has also been certified since 2007 as a family-friendly institution of higher education, in line with its efforts to ensure sustainable improvement in the compatibility of studies, career and family for its students and its teaching, research and administrative staff. Social justice is one of the central principles of this institution. Through various mentoring programmes and its credit accumulation and recognition procedures, ASH Berlin promotes equality of opportunity and educational justice.

6 Studying at ASH Berlin Bachelors programmes for a first academic degree ASH Berlin offers four bachelors programmes. The Social Work bachelors programme, which leads to the Bachelor of Arts (B. A.), qualifies students to work independently in the various fields of social work. Starting in the 2010/2011 winter semester, the university is offering the opportunity to study social work online. The Basa-online programme is designed for individuals already employed in social-sector-related occupations who want to pursue a bachelor s degree while continuing to work. The programme comprises both online and on-campus phases. Bachelors programmes - Social Work - Early Childhood Education - Health and Social Care Management - Physiotherapy /Occupational Therapy Consecutive masters programmes - Research in Social Work and Pedagogy - Management and Quality Development in the Health Sector Additional information available at our website: The Health and Social Care Management bachelors programme leads to a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) and prepares students specifically for management duties in medical and care facilities. The Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy programme also leads to a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.). Graduates of that programme are prepared to respond professionally to new developments and changes in the healthcare system and manage them in a scientific manner, for instance, at physiotherapy or occupational therapy practices or hospitals. The Early Childhood Education bachelors programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts (B. A.), qualifies its students to work with children of 0-12 years of age and prepares graduates to meet the growing requirements found at childcare centres or related agencies and associations.

7 Designed to accommodate employed individuals, the Early Childhood Education bachelors programme can be started in the winter semester of any given year and can be integrated with employment. It is intended for employed childcare providers who wish to link their professional activities with studies without interrupting their employment. To facilitate the transition between tertiary education and employment and occupational training, credit accumulation procedures apply to programme-relevant work for all bachelors programmes. Broadening and deepening knowledge with consecutive masters programmes The two consecutive masters programmes build on ASH Berlin bachelors programmes, deepening the knowledge base of their students. The Research in Social Work and Education masters programme builds on the Social Work and Early Childhood Education programmes. The programme, which leads to a Master of Arts, qualifies its graduates for activities in the fields of practice-based research, project management, or management positions in social work and education. It is designed for students who want to play an active role in constructing the scientific basis of their profession and draw on research to improve the practices within that profession. The Management and Quality Development in the Health Sector masters programme is intended for ASH Berlin graduates who have completed an initial degree in the area of Health and Social Care Management, Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy or a comparable programme. The degree of Master of Science qualifies graduates to direct larger-scale facilities in the healthcare sector, to establish and manage a care or therapy facility, and to research or develop innovative concepts in the healthcare sector.

8 Lifelong learning For individual and flexible learning: Masters programmes offering a further qualification Curricula vitae and career planning are becoming ever more individual and flexible. With its nine advanced-degree masters programmes, the university offers interested individuals the opportunity to acquire a further qualification independently of their earlier degree programme with respect to both time and content. For example, students in the English-language Intercultural Conflict Management masters programme can acquire skills associated with the employment fields of international development work. The Clinical Social Work masters qualifies specialized personnel involved in psycho-social consulting or treatment. The Biographical and Creative Writing masters programme teaches techniques used in educational and creative writing to individuals employed in social work, supervision or adult education. All of the masters programmes are described at Perfectly tailored offerings at the Centre for Further Education Lifelong learning is taking on increasing importance in our knowledge society. The offerings of the Centre for Further Education are aimed at women and men in the healthcare, childcare and social care professions. Further-education offerings range from individual single-day to five-day seminars on to longer-term certificate courses intended to be combined with fulltime employment. Through these academic furthereducation offerings mostly at the level of the masters the Centre for Further Education responds to current societal developments, tailoring its programmes to meet the needs of practicing professionals. The seminars and certificate courses are regularly evaluated and enhanced. The certificate courses on offer are led by university instructors from the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, all of whom can draw on experience in professional practice.

Under the Act on Higher Education of the Federal State of Berlin, university of applied sciences graduates are eligible to pursue doctorates. ASH Berlin supports doctoral work within the framework of its Graduate Collegia and in cooperation with universities that award doctoral degrees. Women pursuing a doctorate are supported by ASH Berlin through doctoral colloquia and through the Alice Salomon Scholarship Programme for Women. 10 In international networks and active in research Research-intensive institution: Academic inquiry in dialogue with professional practice Research is an integral part of the development of higher education. ASH Berlin supports the research activities of its teachers and is the recipient of considerable external funding. ASH Berlin students participate in research projects and are qualified to pursue independent research right up to the acquisition of a doctoral degree. ASH Berlin is engaged in continual and productive dialogue with professionals in the field, thereby ensuring that its research activities are application-oriented and relevant to professional practice. At the same time, it is contributing to the innovative advancement of established practice. The results of ASH Berlin research are released in numerous publications. To promote regional development, since September of 2009, the Institute for Applied Research [Institut für angewandte Forschung e. V. IFAF] has chiefly supported joint research activities involving Berlin s public universities of applied sciences. ASH Berlin is the home of the IFAF s Integration and Health competence centre: the centre promotes cross-linkage of research associated with that area being pursued by the partner institutions and the integration of regional partners.

11 ASH Berlin thinks and acts on a European and international level Since 1980, ASH Berlin has been expanding its contacts with institutions of higher education and those involved in social work, healthcare and education. ASH Berlin s international relationships are cultivated through study trips, student exchange semesters and within the scope of cooperation with other educational institutions. At present, students, teachers and staff of ASH Berlin are reaping the benefits from its contractual ties to 59 educational institutions in 24 countries. Students are able to take part in European exchange programmes (ERASMUS, LEONARDO, etc.). The foreign language skills required for such exchanges can be acquired within the foreign language programme at ASH Berlin or elsewhere. Courses in ASH Berlin s international curriculum are taught in English and Spanish, with German and international students learning side by side. ASH Berlin is an active member of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW), the European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW) and the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW).

12 Strength in networks Creating lively cooperation The University of Applied Sciences in the region Lively cooperation among (professional) associations, agencies and organizations is a characteristic feature of the successful transfer from theory to practice and of the research-intense application-oriented institution of higher education. For instance, the Fröbel Group finances an endowed chair in the Early Childhood Education programme at ASH Berlin. University teachers engage in joint research with childcare facilities or partner universities to examine current questions of social or health policy or issues relating to early childhood education. Students, too, through their internship semesters and volunteer work, some of which takes place in Hellersdorf, make valuable contributions to the exchange between science and professional practice. Within the framework of the ASH Builds Potential mentoring programme, students take on mentoring roles for other students or school pupils with immigrant backgrounds. Regular lecture series within the bachelors and masters programmes represent an opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions on a range of topics. That opportunity is not limited to university members: interested professional colleagues from outside the university also take up the invitation to take part in the lively exchange of opinions at the university.
