1 THIS IS A DESIGN GUIDE NOT A SPECIFICATION SECTION PART 1 GENERAL Montgomery County Public Schools Facilities Guide DIVISION 16 ELECTRICAL WIRING DEVICES A. Provide a dedicated 20 amp, 208 volt, single phase circuit with a NEMA 6-20R, 20 amp, 208 volt, single phase receptacle for copiers in the Main Office Workroom and in the Media Center Workroom. B. Provide NEMA 5-20R duplex receptacles. Device color: 1. Normal Ivory 2. Emergency Red 3. Data Gray with gray device plate C. Standard receptacle color shall be ivory. Standard device plate color shall be ivory crackle type. D. Acceptable manufacturers Pass & Seymour, Hubbell/Bryant and Leviton. E. Provide the Command Center with emergency power receptacle, telephone outlet, data outlet and PA system microphone. Command Center to be located by MCPS. F. For every radon system pipe, provide a GFCI/weatherproof 20 amp receptacle located on roof for radon equipment. Locations as selected by the Architect. G. Installation detail for receptacles located on roof. See Standard Detail E-8.0 on following pages. H. For Standard Classroom Front Wall Data and Power arrangement. See Standard Detail E-9.0 on following pages I. For Standard Teacher s Station TV/Data/Voice/Power detail. See Standard Detail E-10.0 on following pages J. Goggle Cases require 200 watts. Multiple cases can be connected to one circuit. K. Provide a duplex receptacle on each landing of each stair. L. Kitchen - Provide a push button at the loading dock door connected to a buzzer in the kitchen office. M. Kitchen Hood 1. Provide shunt trip circuit breaker for any electrical equipment located under the hood and connected to the hood fire suppression system. 2. If there is gas feed equipment under the hood, connect gas solenoid valve to the hood fire suppression system to shut off gas. N. Kitchen Provide GFCI receptacles except for refrigerators and freezers. O. Provide mushroom push button for emergency power shut-off for Elementary and Middle Schools in the following areas: 1. In Elementary and Middle Schools, Provide two NEMA 14-50R receptacles for kilns. Provide a two pole 50 amp circuit breaker with 3# #8 ground in 1 conduit. Interlock exhaust fan with kiln switch. See Kiln Wiring Diagram. Standard Detail E-11.0 on following pages. R. In High School Art Rooms, provide four NEMA 14-50R receptacles for kilns. Provide a two pole 50 amp circuit breaker with 3# #8 ground in 1 conduit. Interlock exhaust fan with kiln switch. Similar to Kiln Wiring Diagram. See Standard Detail E-12.0 on following pages. PART 2 RECEPTACLE LAYOUT GUIDELINES A. Before locating the power receptacles, check architectural drawings for type of wall construction, such as drywall and masonry, and make sure that there are no conflicts with other equipment. The outlets boxes shall be symmetrically located according to room layout and shall not interfere with other work or equipment. Also, show any special outlet design details on the drawing. B. All receptacles and outlet boxes shall be flush-mounted in walls and floors unless they have to be surface mounted due to wall or floor construction type. Outlets located outdoors or in damp locations shall be weatherproof (GFCI) type. All receptacles located within 6'of sink shall be GFCI type. Wall mounted receptacles and outlet devices shall be mounted 18" above finished floor or 6" above countertops. When receptacles are mounted in masonry walls, the top of the outlet box shall be in line with the top of a masonry unit (16 above finished floor). All receptacle outlet boxes must be equipped with ground terminal for green bond ground wire. Floor outlets shall be flush-floor type (except in kitchen) with brass cover and lift-up lids. C. The following criteria shall be used to layout receptacles outlet boxes for different areas: 1. Classrooms - Provide two (2) duplex receptacles on each wall 2 minimum 12 feet apart. Also provide five (5) duplex receptacles with orange cover plates for computers; of these, four (4) shall be mounted on the back wall and one (1) on the front wall. Provide one (1) separate dedicated circuit for the five (5) computer duplex receptacles. DO NOT provide clock outlet because battery-pack type clocks will be provided by MCPS, except provide two (2) clock hanger outlets one on each section of gymnasium. Kindergarten and Pre Kindergarten: All receptacles mounted 16 to the top of receptacle shall be GFCI type or be connected to a GFCI circuit breaker. 2. Administration - In each administrative office provide one (1) duplex receptacle on each wall. In the General Office provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 12 ft. along the walls and a floor mounted (flush) combination outlet of quadruplex receptacle and telephone outlet for main counter. Provide a duplex receptacle and telephone outlet for each desk. Provide a dedicated 20 amp, 208 volt, single phase circuit with a NEMA 6-20R, 20 amp, 208 volt, single phase receptacle for copiers in the Main Office Workroom and in the Media Center Workroom. Provide one (1) duplex receptacle with dedicated circuit to emergency panel for sound system console. In health suite, provide two (2) duplex receptacles above sink counter, one (1) dedicated circuit, duplex receptacle for refrigerator, one (1) duplex receptacle near each cot in resting station, and one (1) duplex receptacle near the nurse's station. 3. Corridors - Provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 50'for utility purposes. Provide dedicated circuit for corridor receptacles. Provide maximum two (2) receptacles per circuit. 4. Multipurpose Room - Provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 16'along perimeter walls. In the stage area, provide a minimum of one (1) duplex receptacle on each side wall. 3 THIS IS A DESIGN GUIDE NOT A SPECIFICATION 5. Kitchen - Provide power for the kitchen equipment as per kitchen equipment manufacturer's requirements. Before laying out these receptacles and connections, coordinate locations with kitchen equipment layout. In addition, provide additional convenience duplex receptacles on each wall. Provide one (1) duplex receptacle above each walk-in freezer and refrigerator. Provide emergency power for each walk-in freezer and refrigerator. Provide 3/4" empty conduit from each cash register outlet to nearest wall to ceiling space for future data network system. Provide a push button at the kitchen loading dock door connected to a buzzer in the kitchen office. Provide necessary service for Kiosk (high school only) as required. 6. Gymnasium - provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 20'along perimeter walls. The locations for these receptacles should be coordinated with bleachers as well as paddling. Provide one (1) junction box with a single pole-20 amp circuit for a scoreboard and shot clocks. Controls for all electrically operated basketball backstops shall be located at one location in a recessed, key operated box. For folding partition, controls shall be provided on each side of partition and it is to be controlled by two individual at a time, (OSHA requirement). Provide a junction box and receptacle for scoring table next to partition housing. 7. Toilets - Provide one (1) GFCI type duplex receptacle near wash basin in every staff toilet. Do not provide receptacles in student toilets. 8. Boys and girls toilet rooms Provide a junction box and a dedicated 20 amp single phase power circuit for each future hand dryer. Coordinate the number of hand dryers and location with the project Architect. 9. Tech Lab (for middle school only) - Provide receptacles and power requirements for equipment as per manufacturer s requirements. Provide 2-3 additional receptacles. The circuit breakers for the Tech Lab should be shunted at the panelboard. The receptacles and light fixture covers and spray booth at Tech Lab shall conform with NEC Article Applied Tech Center/Engineering Research and Design Center ( high school only) Provide receptacles and power requirement for equipment as per manufacturer s requirements. Provide 2-3 additional receptacles. The receptacles and light fixture covers and spray booth at Tech Lab shall conform with NEC Article 500. Circuit breakers for electric stoves shall be shunted at the panelboard. See Standard Details E-21.0 and E on following pages. 11. For Home Economics/Nutrition Labs/Food Science Lab (high and middle schools only): Provide receptacles and power requirements for equipment as per manufacturer s requirements. Provide 2-3 additional receptacles. Provide shunt-trip for all electrical stoves. See Standard Detail E-23.0 on following pages 12. Media Center a. For shelving located on the perimeter wall, provide duplex receptacles at 12'intervals along the toe space of shelving. b. For circulation desk if it is located in the center of media center provide a stub-up for electrical and network wiring, to serve the receptacle and network outlets. Provide one (1) quad receptacle for each section of circulation desk. Provide one (1) network outlet for circulation desk. Location for all outlets in the circulation desk shall be coordinated with architectural detail drawings. c. For resource room, provide one (1) duplex receptacle and one (1) data outlet for CD ROM. Provide one (1) flush floor-mounted duplex receptacle for projector at an appropriate location as directed by MCPS for viewing the screen. Provide one (1) duplex receptacle and one (1) data outlet for each computer station. Note: If floormounted receptacles are to be used, the floor box shall be flush mounted. 4 THIS IS A DESIGN GUIDE NOT A SPECIFICATION d. In material preparation area, provide one 6'-8'length of Wiremold mounted 6 above counter with receptacles spaced every 18. e. Provide a minimum of two (2) duplex receptacles in media specialist's office. f. For media workroom, provide one (1) 30a, 208v, 1 phase, NEMA 6-20R receptacle for copier. Also provide at least one (1) duplex receptacle on each wall of workroom. g. In media storage provide one (1) duplex receptacle on each wall. Receptacle locations should be coordinated with shelving layout. h. For high/middle school directional instructional area/tech information access center, provide one combination data/duplex receptacle for each computer station. i. Provide one 120v, 20 amp 1 phase dedicated circuit junction box for security system for gate (only for high/middle school). 13. Computer Laboratory - For wall mounted computer work- stations, provide wiremold 4000 with divider (upper part to be used for power and lower for network) mounted on wall flush above built-in wall units. See Standard Detail E-7.0 in Section a. A maximum three (3) duplex receptacles are to be connected to each circuit. 14. MDF Room - Provide five (5) quadruplex receptacles with each connected to a dedicated emergency circuit. 15. IDF Room - Provide two (2) quadruplex receptacles with each connected to a dedicated emergency circuit. 16. Communications Laboratory/Support Rooms - A typical communications lab consists of three (3) areas- studio/support room, control room/support room, and headend equipment room. a. For elementary school studio, provide at least four (4) duplex receptacles on each side wall. Provide a separate, dedicated circuit for each receptacle. b. For high/middle school studio - Provide at least two (2) duplex receptacles on each side wall. For production lights (provided by MCPS) provide 3 to 5 grid bars. The grid bars must be furnished and installed by electrical contractor. Above the lighting grid bars provide ceiling mounted recessed duplex receptacles spaced 5'x5'matrix. Provide dedicated circuit for each ceiling mounted receptacle. Coordinate exact layout with MCPS, c. In control room, provide at least two (2) duplex receptacles above countertop. Provide two (2) duplex receptacles on the back wall and one (1) quad receptacle on the sidewall of control room. d. In head-end equipment room provide two (2) duplex receptacles. 17. Science Labs/Chemistry Labs - provide two (2) duplex receptacles, mounted one (1) each side of island below the countertop. Provide one (1) duplex receptacles for each island 6" above countertop for computer. Provide a push button gas valve shut-off at an exit door for the room. Provide a key operated reset at the teacher s desk. See Standard Details E-25.0 and E-26.0 on following pages a. Biology/Physics or other Generic Labs - Provide one (1) duplex receptacles receptacle for each station. Also, provide one (1) duplex receptacles and one (1) network outlet for each computer. Provide a push button gas valve shut-off at an exit door for the room. Provide a key operated reset at the teacher s desk. See Standard Detail E-24.0 on following pages 18. Business Education Suite (High School only) - Business education suite is combination of three areas - model office, computing/word processing room, office/storage. Revised: 4/17/09 WIRING DEVICES

For each module provide four (4) duplex receptacles and one (1) data outlet for computers. For instructor s counter provide two (2) duplex receptacles and one (1) data outlet. In addition provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 12'on the parameter of wall. Provide one 30 amp, 1ø, 208 volt NEMA 6-20R outlet for copier. 19. Computing/Work Processing Room - This room has capacity of 32 student stations for word processing. Provide one (1) duplex receptacle for each station. Provide one (1) data outlet to serve four (4) stations. In addition provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 12'on each side wall. 20. Office/Storage - Provide one (1) duplex receptacle and data outlet for each desk location. 21. Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) Classroom (High School only) - On the student work station area provide five (5) duplex receptacles, each 3'on center and two data outlets (6'apart) with 1-1/4" empty conduit to ceiling space. In addition provide two duplex receptacles on other perimeter wall. In the office provide on duplex receptacle one (1) duplex receptacle and data outlet near teacher s desk. 22. Career Child Development (High school only) - Career child development area is a combination of child development laboratory, seminar/personal, family observation and office/storage area. a. The Child Development - Provide two (2) duplex receptacles on each side wall. In addition provide three (3) duplex receptacles and one (1) data outlet on designated wall for computer stations. On the kitchen area provide receptacles with dedicated circuits for microwave oven, refrigerator, and junction boxes w/dedicated circuit for disposal and dishwasher. Also in kitchen area provide two (2) duplex receptacle above counter. All electrical outlets in this area shall be GFCI type duplex receptacles. 23. Seminar/Personal family observation area - Provide two (2) duplex receptacles on each side wall. Provide five (5) duplex receptacles and two (2) data outlets on designated wall for computer stations. a. Office - Provide one (1) duplex receptacle and one data outlet for each desk location. 24. Baseball field/tennis courts (high school only) - Provide one (1) duplex receptacle (GFC)I weatherproof type) for pitching machine for baseball field and tennis court. For tennis courts provide (1) duplex receptacle (twist-lock type) for every two courts. 25. Building Exterior - provide one (1) duplex receptacle (twist-type) on each side of building. Provide GFCI weatherproof type. 26. Staff lounge - provide four (4) GFCI duplex receptacles with each having a dedicated circuit for vending machine, microwave oven, etc. Coordinate location with architectural drawings. 27. Miscellaneous Areas a. In mechanical and electrical rooms, provide one (1) duplex receptacle every 20' along interior of walls. b. In general storage rooms, provide at least one (1) duplex receptacle. c. On the roof provide one (1) duplex GFCI weatherproof type receptacle within 25 feet of each air-handling unit per National Electrical Code requirements. d.
