3 COMMUNICATIONS Game/C++ Programming If you can dream it, we can teach you how to design it. You know what makes a great video game. Turn your passion for these games into a career choice. This program is designed to provide instruction in computer science using the C++ language. Students will be able to develop video games & professional programs using realistic hands-on interdisciplinary exercises. This program will prepare students for the Computer Science Advanced Placement (AP) Exam as prescribed by the College Board. The game programming DigiPen curriculum will focus on programming using C++. Additional training will cover 2D and 3D animation using 3ds Max software. First you start with the fundamentals of programming in the C++ language. You are able to work at your own pace, understand the basics of programming, and develop problem solving skills. Once you have mastered the basics, you will learn what it takes to design a video game from scratch. You will also learn how to create 3D characters and how to animate them. Expand your artistic ability and enhance it with technology. Take your ideas from concept to reality and show it off to the world on your own web site. Design your future career by using the most recent graphics and web software. You will learn what it takes to create images for print and on the web that will get noticed. You ll start with some of the basic concepts of drawing, move on to computer graphic design projects, and then learn how to build a web site portfolio to show it all off. You ll even get to create logos, business cards, or websites for real companies. This program provides an understanding of the photography and digital imaging industry. Students will receive extensive training in traditional black and white photography which includes taking pictures, developing in the program s dark room, and printing black and white photographs. Digital photography, portrait photography, and advertising photography skills are taught as part of the program. Photograph studio skills taught include techniques for camera use, lighting placement, background, props, and layout. A major emphasis will be on digital imaging using the program Adobe Photoshop for photograph restoration, special effects, touch ups and manipulation. Have you ever seen pictures that looked so good that you knew a professional had taken them? That person could be you by learning the proper techniques to capture and edit your pictures. You ll learn about taking photos, developing, printing, studio and lighting setup, and camera use through hands-on activities. Use the latest computer software to edit pictures to look like something you wouldn t imagine possible. Whether you prefer black and white, color, or digital photography, you will gain the skills to make your pictures stand out. Want to make a difference in hundreds of people s lives? Become a nurse and lend a helping hand. Do you want to show your compassion for others? Learning how to report observations, understanding the nature of disease and common health problems, and the skills and techniques of how to take care of people is just the beginning. You ll study how to help people recovering from sickness and those that are disabled or injured. Practice these skills in a real hospital setting or in a nursing home on clinical internships. Turn your passion for helping others into a state nurse assistant certification while still in high school. Certified Nurse Assistants are in high demand. Your heart for helping others can make a big difference. This program is designed to prepare students for employment as nursing assistants and for future entry into nursing education programs. This program leads to a CNA certification. Training will include the development of basic nursing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills through lecture, laboratory demonstrations, laboratory practice, and clinical experience. Instruction in this program includes a minimum of forty clinical hours held in long-term facilities in the community. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to take the written examination for the nurse assistant state certification. Students in this program must be seniors. 7 HUMAN SERVICES Medical Assisting Medical Assisting is at the heart of health care because medical assistants are the right arm of the modern medical clinic. The demand for people to fill jobs in this field is higher than any other in the United States today. This program introduces students to a wide variety of careers in the allied health field including medical lab technician, medical assistant, and medical office professional. Training will include medical terminology, communication, body structure and function, vital sign measurement, principles of infection control, medical instrumentation, pharmacy technology, medical office assistant certification procedures, and microscope usage. As you train to become a Medical Assistant you ll be trained to work closely with physicians, physician assistants, and nurses. Practice what you ve learned with hands-on activities on how to read vital signs, sterilize medical equipment, and perform diagnostic testing. You learn about parts of the human body and how they work together, how to receive patients, and how to transcribe medical records. 8 Fire Fighting HUMAN SERVICES When the alarm sounds will you rapidly respond to the call? Fire fighters are regarded as the true heroes of every community and are more in demand than ever before. As you train to become a fire fighter, you ll learn how to extinguish, confine, or escape from fire. Begin by learning fire suppression, fire chemistry, forcible entry, and search and rescue techniques. Practice what you ve learned by performing drills with ropes, ladders, hoses, and a fire engine. Ride along with local fire departments to see the skills you ve learned in action. Smoke the competition, become a real life hero, and climb the ladder to success. Skills taught are: understanding fire chemistry, wearing personal protective clothing, identifying ropes, tying knots, using fire extinguishers, performing forcible entry, carrying and raising ladders, operating self-contained breathing apparatus, employing search and rescue techniques, working with ventilation tools, and practicing hose evolutions on an operating fire engine. The demand for caring, educated first responders in both the public and private sectors is growing. This program prepares students to take the licensure examination of the Illinois Department of Public Health to become an EMT-B. Activities include clinical experiences in a hospital emergency room and ride alongs with local Fire/EMS departments. Students will learn American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR, patient assessment, stabilization, and initial pre-hospital medical treatment of injured and ill patients. Learn how teamwork can make a lifesaving difference by mastering rescue techniques used by EMTs. You ll practice CPR, patient assessment and stabilization, treatment of those injured and ill, and transportation of patients. Lessons in anatomy show you how the human body works transforming you into an expert first responder. Work along side emergency room doctors, nurses, and paramedics in area hospital emergency rooms and fire departments during your required 40 hour internship. The culinary and hospitality industry is the second largest employer in the United States with high paying careers in every segment of the industry. First you will learn what it takes to operate a safe and sanitary kitchen. Then knife skills, food preparation, classical cooking methods, nutrition, menu planning, and inventory control follow. By then you ll be ready to serve up your tasty creations in the Tech Campus dining room or deli. You might even have a chance to show off your skills under the direction of a master chef in area restaurants as a culinary intern. Imagine yourself as a chef at a fine restaurant, a pastry artist at a four star hotel, the owner of a successful catering company, or working on a luxury cruise ship while experiencing the taste of success. This program provides culinary and hospitality education designed to prepare students for the many positions in the hospitality industry. Students will gain skills and knowledge in cold and hot food preparation, nutrition, baking, pastry, menu planning, sanitation, equipment operation, inventory control, purchasing, and front-of-the-house customer service skills. The demands are greater than ever for a cosmetologist or nail technician with a great foundation in the field. The Tech Campus offers a Cosmetology program that includes nail technology. Students will acquire the 1500 hours of experience required for licensing while learning how to perform shampoos, make-overs, facials, hair-styling, manicuring, sculptured nails, permanent waving, hair coloring, and cutting. Following the lab phase of the program, students will reinforce their training by working on clients in the Tech Campus Creations Salon As a cosmetologist or nail technician, you ll devote your talents to making others look their best. You ll keep pace with the fashion world through practice, instructor demonstrations, and working on clients in the Tech Campus Creations Salon. The cosmetology industry offers many options for personal growth, with limitless career paths from which to choose. Choosing a cosmetology career isn t like choosing a new haircut or nail color. Internships in area salons are a great way to help you decide on your specialty. Our program puts you a cut above the rest as a hair stylist, nail technician, manicurist, or even a skin care specialist. 12 Criminal Justice HUMAN SERVICES Have you ever wondered how DNA solves crimes or what it takes to be a S.W.A.T. team member? Be the hand of justice that upholds the law, protects our rights, and keeps our communities safe. Have you ever seen LAW & ORDER or CSI on television and wondered how the crime was solved or why the judge withdrew evidence? You will learn the legal process starting from the investigation, to the arrest, and the law behind it all. You ll practice police tactical response maneuvers, courtroom proceedings through mock trials, and collecting evidence at a crime scene. Imagine yourself as a police officer on the beat, a lawyer serving justice in the courtroom, or a detective on the crime scene all while enforcing the laws that make this country great. Hands-on activities include simulated police scenarios, forensic examination, crime scene investigation, crisis intervention, emergency response, search and seizure, and interrogation techniques. Professionals from the field will share their experiences and specialty training. To participate in this program students must have a clean disciplinary record. 13 HUMAN SERVICES Early Childhood Education Are you full of energy, love to tell stories, create art, and move to music? Then you have the building blocks to become a childcare teacher in this ever expanding field where the demand is growing. This program is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers serving children. Students will develop skills to plan and implement age-appropriate activities in one of the two operating preschool labs. These skills include developing educational activities for the preschool children in creative arts, math, science, music, and language. Instruction will focus on the positive guidance of child behavior and all aspects of their development. Internships, job shadows, portfolio development. As you prepare to become an early childcare professional you will realize the early years are the learning years. Start off by discovering how to guide child behavior and promote child safety and nutrition. Plan activities in art, music, science, math, language, large motor, and drama in our pre-school lab and Infant Toddler Center. Put your teaching skills to the test by working as an intern in area day care centers. Once you understand the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of young children you can play an important role in making a positive difference in a child s life. Automobiles have become more sophisticated than ever and the demand for technicians to work on those vehicles is strong. The four phases of our auto program (brakes, steering and suspension, electrical systems, and engine performance) will better prepare you for today s employers. Whether your goals are to work in a dealership or to pursue other great careers in the automotive field, we are a great place to start your journey. You may even have a chance to work in a dealership as a paid intern while attending the Tech Campus. The program covers all the basics you need to start as an automotive technician. The demand for a great auto body technician is higher than ever, so frame up your skills in automotive collision repair. This program provides students with the fundamental skills of the automotive collision repair industry. Instruction in the program emphasizes both the repair and the refinishing skills associated with restoring a damaged automobile to factory specifications. Using an industry-endorsed curriculum, students will develop core skills in automobile construction, sheet metal damage repair, MIG welding, and basic refinishing. Upon mastery of the skills in core areas, students will gain skills in damage estimating, shop management, heavy collision repair, and finish matching. If the challenge of dismantling a car and putting it back together is up your alley turn this art of tinkering into a career. You ll learn sheet metal and welding techniques, body alignment, finishing, and painting to get that car back on the road looking good. One of them could be yours. We bring the construction industry right into the class and lab with hands-on projects. You ll start with the basics like job safety and the proper use of construction tools. From there we will help you develop your skills by constructing our off site project house, while practicing what you ve learned. You can strengthen your foundation by becoming a paid apprentice. Welders are in such high demand that companies are paying top dollar for people with these heavy metal skills. Imagine a job so portable that you could go to work high up on a sky scraper or even down deep under the sea. This program provides hands-on experiences gained from extensive practice and application of knowledge in shop safety, oxy-fuel welding and burning, arc welding, (stick, MIG, TIG), plasma arc cutting, and automatic shape cutting. Layout and fit-up, blueprint reading, and weld symbols are used to fabricate a variety of metal projects. The American Welding Society (AWS) recognizes the Tech Campus Welding program as an Educational Instruction Member. Seeing a project start as a blueprint and end as a metal masterpiece using torch power is just the start. You ll work with a number of different metals like steel and aluminum. MIG, TIG, stick, plasma, laser beam, electron beam, oxyacetylene, and electric arc are some of the welding techniques used to join metal together. Does melting metal and fusing it together at a few thousand degrees sound exciting to you? Welding is used on ocean liners to mountain bikes, construction equipment to race cars, and oil platforms to space shuttles. Welding holds the world together, so get fired up about a hot career in welding. Learn all the basics and more about how a computer works. Does the challenge of dismantling a computer and putting it back together sound cool to you? As a computer technician, you ll know how to fix basic and advanced computer problems. You ll learn how to troubleshoot hardware and software issues and how to upgrade computers for the latest high powered applications. Before you know it, you will be able to build your own computer. 19 Frequently Asked Questions WHAT IS THE TECH CAMPUS? The Tech Campus is an extension site of many area high schools for juniors and seniors to attend classes in a specific career training program. The Tech Campus is regarded as one of the best Career Technical Education training facilities in the Midwest with a highly qualified staff dedicated to excellence in career technical education. With twenty-two member high schools throughout Lake and McHenry Counties representing over 1600 high school students, we have the largest career technical secondary educational system in the State of Illinois. WHO CAN ATTEND THE TECH CAMPUS? Juniors and seniors from the following high schools can attend the Tech Campus: Alden-Hebron, Antioch, Deerfield, Grant, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Highland Park, Johnsburg, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Lakes, Libertyville, Mundelein, North Chicago, Richmond-Burton, Round Lake, Stevenson, Vernon Hills, Warren, Waukegan, Wauconda, and Zion-Benton. Students from non-member schools must inquire through their district of residence. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ATTEND THE TECH CAMPUS? Students do not pay tuition to attend the Tech Campus. Tuition is paid by the school district in which the student resides. Students are responsible for lab fees, course supplies, and materials. Costs vary by program. See the student handbook for program fee listings. HOW DO STUDENTS ENROLL AT THE TECH CAMPUS? Contact your high school counselor ASAP and tell them you want to attend the Tech Campus. Your counseling department has Tech Campus applications available. It is important to talk to your counselor early in the year so that you can attend the Tech Campus and complete all courses required for graduation. HOW DO STUDENTS GET TO THE TECH CAMPUS? Your high school provides bus transportation to and from the Tech Campus. WHEN ARE THE CLASSES AT THE TECH CAMPUS? The Tech Campus has three sessions a day. First session is from 8:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., second session is from 10:25 a.m. to 12:25 p.m., and third session is from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you choose Cosmetology, the AM session is from 8:20 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and the PM session is from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, Cosmetology students must also complete 13 Saturday classes. These extended hours allow students to meet the 1500 hours of course work required for state certification. DO I GET HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT FOR ATTENDING THE TECH CAMPUS? YES! In fact, you get three high school elective credits for each year you complete at the Tech Campus. You can use this to your advantage to improve your GPA because when you get an A in a Tech Campus program, it is like getting 3 A s in a typical high school course. Cosmetology students earn four credits. IF I PLAN TO GO TO COLLEGE, CAN I FIT A COURSE AT THE TECH CAMPUS INTO MY SCHEDULE? Most students can take all required academic subjects and still have time for a Tech Campus program. Some students take government or history in summer school to have more time for electives. The Tech Campus can also help you get a head start in college. CAN I EARN COLLEGE CREDIT? YES! You can earn college credit in almost all programs at the Tech Campus. We have agreements with CLC, MCC, and many other respected colleges and technical schools that help you get a head start in college before you graduate from high school. IS THE TECH CAMPUS THE COLLEGE OF LAKE COUNTY? No, we are not the College of Lake County. We are an extension of your high school.
