2 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -2 Getting Started You will first receive a message, this message informs you that if you are on someone else s computer that you cannot install software that you need to select from the Client Type the Java Client, otherwise you will need to go to the Downloads tab and download the appropriate client for your computer (either PC or Mac). This message will be received if the system cannot determine if you already have the proper client installed. You may receive this message when you do in fact have the client installed based on what browser you are using.

3 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -3 Installing the Client To download the Client click the Downloads tab and select the proper link. You do not have to be logged on in order to perform the download. Also available are documentation that may assist you. You will then proceed to download the client followed by installing it.

5 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -5 Enable Credentials Pass-Through and click Next Enter your Information and click Next

6 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -6 Click Next to use the default destination folder Finally click Install to begin the Installation

7 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -7 The installation will progress until completed Click Finish to finalize the installation

8 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -8 Logging On To Logon you must enter your AUM username and password, as well as either selecting the Windows Client (the default) or the Java Client. If you incorrectly enter your username or password you will receive this message

9 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -9 After installing the client you may be asked to authorize it in your browser. Clicking on the security bar will allow you to install the needed addon Otherwise you will be logged on and see your available Virtual Machine(s)

10 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -10 Connecting to a Virtual Machine Click the icon for the desired Virtual Machine If no Virtual Machines are powered up you will received the following message. It will attempt to connect you every 10 seconds; it generally only takes seconds for the Virtual Machine to become available.

11 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -11 If there are no Virtual Machines available you will receive the following message You may receive a message in your security task bar to download the file, please do so. While you connect to the Virtual Machine this message will be displayed Before logon you will have to accept the University Appropriate Usage Policy

14 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -14 Changing User Preferences Click Preferences There are 4 tabs under Preferences; we will go through each one (Please note the default settings are libel to change as needed for performance tuning. So your default settings might differ from those presented here.)

15 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -15 The General Preferences deal with the look and feel of the website. You might choose to see a list of Virtual Machines rather than an icon. Otherwise these settings will have little effect and should probably remain at their default settings.

16 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -16 The Display Preferences deal with your monitor and settings. Suggested settings are enabled but you may wish to change these. Screen Resolution will be the most common change, Full Screen will match the Desktop to your monitor resolution. Selecting other resolutions will cause the Virtual Machine to run in a window on your Desktop. These settings only apply to you, so feel free to change them to suit your needs.

17 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -17 The Local Resource Preferences deal with items such as your USB Flash Drives, Local Hard Drives and Printers. One again suggested settings are enabled but you may change them. By Default you have access from within the Virtual Machine to your local computers Hard Drives, USB Devices, Printers, Microphone and Clipboard.

18 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -18 The Performance Preferences deal with your connection to the Virtual Machine across the internet. Suggested settings are enabled by default but you may choose these to suit your needs. Choosing the connection speed that most closely reflects your home internet will allow you the best experience. Default is High-Speed Broadband, for slower connection a lower speed such as Low-Speed Broadband might perform best.

19 AUM Virtual Lab User Guide -19 Troubleshooting Ensure that you are connected to the internet. To provide the best experience, shut down any other applications that may be running on your local machine, especially any that uses the internet connection (such as streaming audio or video). If you are unable to run a virtual machine, try using the Java Client. If this succeeds you may need to reinstall the Windows Client. If you are unable to logon, check your username and password. If this persists contact your instructor or ITS. If you get a message that no virtual machines are available this may mean all licenses are in use. Please wait and try again later. If this persists please contact your instructor or ITS.
