5 MESSAGE FROM BRIAN GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE Welcome to the second edition of the Transnet career guide booklet. We have been overwhelmed with the response to the first edition and we hope that this edition proves to be equally beneficial. Since the launch of our Market Demand Strategy (MDS) on 10 April 2012, we have made great strides in ensuring that training and development remains at the forefront of our drive to grow our economy for the benefit of all our people new job opportunities across the economy through the MDS As custodian of the South African ports, rail network and pipeline infrastructure, we believe that it is our duty to ensure that we have well-trained and well-educated colleagues bring our ambitious plans to fruition. Education, training and innovation will therefore play a key role in the success of our plans particularly in the continued rollout of our Market Demand Strategy. The MDS is a profound moment in the life of Transnet. It marks a definitive move by Transnet to demonstrate the role that state-owned companies must play in the development of our economy. We are spending in excess of R300 billion on capital projects over a seven-year period. The MDS is aimed at expanding South Africa s rail, port and pipelines infrastructure, resulting in a significant increase in freight volumes across our infrastructure network. We are also creating up to new job opportunities across the economy through the MDS. This plan will however, not succeed without training. TRANSNET CAREER BOOKLET 3

6 MESSAGE FROM BRIAN As part of our Market Demand Strategy, we are spending R7.7 billion on training, which includes R4.7 billion on bursaries and grants, between now and This training is critically important for all of us in South Africa as it will ensure that we have the critical skills to industrialise our country not just in the short term but to shore up our institutional skills to build and maintain a civic society that we can all - our children, our grandchildren and future generations far ahead be proud of. Innovation in our workplace is equally important and is an aspect that we have to place more emphasis on. It goes hand-in-hand with training. Out of the R312 billion we are spending on our Market Demand Strategy over the next seven years, we have set aside R1 billion for research and development. Last financial year alone, we spent R100 million on research and development. This is a substantial amount of money towards research and development but we believe it is vital to do so because of the value we place on this critical sector. It will allow us to improve on our technologies, innovate and move forward as a company. A company of Transnet s size and magnitude cannot succeed without innovation, especially as an enabler to the Market Demand Strategy. We need to produce our own researchers and thinkers people who can develop practical and innovative solutions to our problems. As Albert Einstein once said, We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. In order to move forward as a country and as a continent, we need to heed Einstein s advice and think differently. Only then can we see the limitless possibilities available to us. Only then can we envision the reality of Pixley ka Isaka Seme words when he wrote of Africa: I see her chains dissolved, her desert plains red with harvest, her Abyssinia and her Zululand the seats of science and religion, reflecting the glory of the rising sun from the spires of their churches and universities. Her Congo and her Gambia whitened with commerce, her crowded cities sending forth the hum of business, and all her sons employed in advancing the victories of peace-greater and more abiding than the spoils of war. 25 Class 4E locomotive on the line TRANSNET CAREER BOOKLET 23

26 SCHOOL OF RAIL What is your current position at Transnet and what does it entail? My current position at Transnet is Trainee Yard Official. I am responsible for marshalling of trains, dispatching, coupling, uncoupling and ensuring that the work is properly performed in the yard. How did you get to be a trainee at Transnet and how was it? I was called for an interview. Luckily the interview went well and I got a call to make myself available for the medical process, which involves medical test, mental fitness and finger prints being taken. As time went on I was called to sign a contract and that is what led me to where I am today. The whole process was smooth, it was a learning curve and I knew that one day I would make it. To be honest, I was the happiest person the day I signed my contract. What does Transnet offer its trainees? Transnet offers a variety of competencies (skills and experience). Firstly Transnet provides induction to all the new trainees, which entails getting to know the things that as a trainee you did not know about. It offers theoretical assessments and then the practical application thereof. Practical includes the following: working as a control shunter; dispatching trains, checking if lines are clear for incoming trains, points are set correctly; and recording of all the information about incoming and outgoing trains on a register book. In terms of skills development, Transnet offers training in: Communication skills in the work place; Working effectively in teams; and Applying working procedures and safety. And it does not end there since it is a learning curve. More competencies are offered day by day. What is your favourite part about this job? I like working as a control shunter because the work allows me to think (apply my mind) and act immediately. It requires a person to be organised, be able to perform different tasks at the same time, being able to apply the skills to different situations and dealing with everyday problems that may occur. It s really an exciting job. Testimonial Viola Makgwale: Trainee Yard Official What is a typical day like in your line of work? We hold a safety meeting with fellow colleagues and with the foreman where we discuss the challenges that we will be facing during our shift and what is expected of us. I then continue with my allocated duties for that day. For example, if I have been placed as a train dispatcher, I ensure that I compose a vehicle list and check if the load is properly marshalled accordingly and all the brakes (airbrake or vacuum) are released. I also ensure that tarpulins are securely affixed on the wagons, doors are closed properly and that the tank wagon is not leaking. I then take all the information to my colleague to depart the train. The process of inspection starts again on the next train in line for departure and so the process goes on until my shift ends. Advice for future trainees? My focus would be more on the theoretical assessment. If an opportunity is offered for trainees to be part of a theoretical assessment that needs to be taken seriously to be able to succeed. 24 TRANSNET

27 What is your current position at Transnet and what does it entail? Trainee Train Assistant How did you get to be a trainee at Transnet? How was it? I saw the advertised post, I was interested and I applied. I then went through the selection processes. If you knew what you know now, what would you have done differently? I would sensitise my fellow colleagues to be more obedient with train working rules in order to minimise fatal incidents\accidents and near misses. What does Transnet offer its trainees (in terms of work environment, experience, etc.) Transnet offers trainees good training and induction in terms of working environment and through well experienced instructors. What is your favourite part about this job? Performing shunting operations. What is a typical day like in your line of work? I come to work in the morning, I sign on to do the breathalyser test, read the notices, check the roster, introduce myself to the driver and then take my kit to the locomotive. When approaching the locomotive, I am vigilant of all the surroundings and cross the lines where it is designated to do so. When I get to the locomotive I clean the cab. When I m done, we do the testing before asking the Chief Shed man for authority to couple the load. After coupling the load and doing the necessary brake tests we wait for the all Testimonial Zintle Manana: Trainee Train Assistant right signal, then we depart for our destination. I patrol the locomotive immediately when we depart, then repeat the signals with the driver, we keep on repeating the signals and checking the loaden-route until we reach our destination. Advice for future trainees? Being a train assistant is an interesting and challenging job, which requires one to be vigilant at all times. It also requires one to have a safety mindset and really be passionate about your work. TRANSNET CAREER BOOKLET 25

34 SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TRADE WELDER TRADE OVERVIEW Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence (combination). This is often done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to become a strong joint, with pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld. This is in contrast with soldering and brazing, which involve melting a lowermelting-point material between the workpieces to form a bond between them, without melting the work pieces. Welders cut, shape and join sections of metal plate and pipes in a wide range of industries. These include construction and engineering, transport, aerospace, and offshore oil and gas. They also carry out repairs on manufacturing equipment and machinery. SKILLS, INTERESTS AND QUALITIES APPLICATION CAREER PATH As a welder you will need to have: Good hand-to-eye coordination; The ability to work accurately; Good concentration levels; The ability to work without direct supervision; The ability to understand technical plans and drawings; Good Mathematics skills to work out measurements; The ability to solve problems; and An understanding of safe working practices. Skinning, or the roof and side panelling, is then inserted before the coach is painted and the fit-out of chairs is then done. Vehicle builders use materials such as steel, wood, plastic or aluminium to construct or modify a commercially built vehicle. Panels, made out of these materials are used to cover the chassis, but first they have to be outlined on the particular material and then cut out, using equipment such as a guillotine or oxy acetylene equipment. They then weld, glue, bolt and rivet these materials together, and onto the chassis. Finally, they fit the suspension and braking systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, lighting and electrical systems, as well as the brakes, door handles, seats, locks and hinges. Vehicle builders are mostly employed by transport equipment companies, including bus and rail transport. Some are also self-employed. Vehicle builders develop a range of skills and as such, it is possible for them to move into other trade areas such as metal fabrication or welding. With experience and further training, they can also move into supervisory positions or work as technical officers or technicians, or in sales. This is a fairly small occupation, which can limit job prospects. However, the skills of vehicle builders can be transferred to other occupations like metal fabrication, hydraulics, mechanical fitting, sheet metal work or finishing. 38 TRANSNET

44 TECHNO GIRL PROGRAMME The Techno Girl programme is all about increasing and enhancing the participation of girls in careers related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The majority of secondary school learners, and particularly girls, fail to reach proficiency in Mathematics and Science. Less than a third of girls taking Mathematics and Science in their secondary school years, leave school and higher institutions without the competencies required to occupy technical careers in STEM fields. To ensure that girls have an equal opportunity to excel in fields that the economy requires, they need to be exposed to opportunities, inspired to success, helped with subject choices and guided regarding their tertiary education, while still at school. Techno Girl is an innovative job-shadowing programme for girls, with a particular interest in STEM careers. The programme is a flagship programme of the Department for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, in partnership with the United Children s Fund and the Department of Basic Education. Founded on the understanding that structured exposure to the workplace can significantly contribute towards motivating disadvantaged girls to take up careers that are in demand in the economy and where women are under-represented, the programme is intended to lead to sustained employment, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty for these girls. What makes the programme particularly compelling is that it covers two of South Africa s key national priorities: education and job creation. What we do We place girls in a structured job-shadowing programme at various departments within Transnet and other job-shadowing partner companies, whose core activities focus on scarce STEM fields. To ensure effectiveness and continuity, girls are placed for three consecutive holiday periods annually over a period of four years. Beginning in Grade 9, the girls exit the programme on completion of Grade TRANSNET

45 Techno Girls As the girls progress from year to year, the level and complexity of the workplace learning and experience is increased. Recruited purely on the grounds of their academic achievement and interest in learning about the world of work, for the vast majority of girls visiting Transnet it will be their first encounter with that world. They will initially have very little knowledge about the programme and how they will benefit from the experience over the long term. How we select participants Girls are selected by provincial departments of education through district offices and schools, based on the following criteria to ensure redress and equitable access: All beneficiaries must be from disadvantaged communities; Only girls in Grades 9 to 12 are eligible; All beneficiaries must be attending public schools; All girls need to meet the minimum pass requirements of the subjects and grades; All beneficiaries need to obtain at least 50% (level 4), in Mathematics/Mathematics Literacy; Girls need to demonstrate good behavioural and disciplinary records at school; and All beneficiaries must be dedicated to their schools and display a keen interest in their academic achievements. 47 Testimonial Garth Malan: Engineer-in-training I am now an Engineer-in- Training within Product Development Coaches at Koedoespoort, Pretoria. The role entails learning as much as possible about Transnet Engineering through various training opportunities combined with hands-on opportunities, all governed by a structured development programme. In my penultimate year of study I applied for a Transnet bursary, and after a fairly easy application process, and undergoing an interview, I was granted a bursary for my final year of study at University of Cape Town. Without a doubt, I would have applied for the bursary at an earlier stage. The environment is not glamorous, but a wealth of knowledge and experience is readily available. A sense of camaraderie is evident throughout the business and people are always more than willing to assist, despite the confusion that many trainees often display. My favourite aspect of the job is that there is always something new to learn, and something to be gained from every person with whom you come into contact. I had not really been aware of the rail industry prior to becoming a part of Transnet, but since my employment I have come to understand its magnitude and importance and the major role it plays in supporting the economy. I have realised that any contribution I make, whether big or small, contributes to the keeping the wheels turning in South Africa. There is no such thing as a typical day for me. A day could, however, include responding to s, attending meetings, brainstorming a new development, addressing mechanical issues within the workshop, ensuring that work is carried out according to specifications and safety compliance, and liaising with a designer regarding the layout and contents of a coach. I would advise future trainees to gain as much as possible from the experience. The wealth of knowledge you acquire during your training tenure will greatly impact on the success of your engineering career in the future. TRANSNET CAREER BOOKLET 45

Transnet offers its trainees the opportunity to learn and grow at a rapid rate. As trainees we get the opportunity to attend numerous courses and training both on technical and personal skills development. I feel there is a fair balance between management and technical roles, and the work experience that I ve gained in just the first year of my training has been phenomenal. A typical day for me can include meeting with stakeholders to determine what software or software modifications are required, designing software solutions, writing code or programmes, testing and validating software to ensure that it works correctly under all conditions, and troubleshooting code that is causing errors or inaccuracies. My favourite part of the job is the vast amount of design work that I am exposed to. Even though the work is very challenging, it is really rewarding. Then there s the excellent social dynamics Testimonial Imraan Vawda: Engineer-in-Training within my department. Great emphasis is placed on creating a culture of family amongst team members. Milestones such as project completion, birthdays, weddings, birth of a child, to name a few, are celebrated consistently. 46 TRANSNET

Putting knowledge into practice I am a funding analyst at Group Treasury, and form part of the team responsible for the origination and structuring of debt transactions for Transnet. When the position was advertised in the print media, I applied and was called for the first round of selections. I made it through the second round of interviews, and commenced my training on 1 April I got hands-on training and was assigned small projects from time to time. I was well-received and trained by phenomenal selfless people who were very much concerned with my growth and wanted to see me thriving, whether within or outside the Company. The programme was structured in such a way that it allowed me to move within Treasury units, and that has allowed me to have a holistic view of the role played by Treasury in the Group. It has also made me appreciate how the outputs of any one unit affect other units. The programme provided me with an opportunity, in a nurturing environment, to put my theoretical knowledge into practice. The experience I gained here fostered rapid learning more than a formal course would. There is nothing typical about my day. My team and I are at the forefront of driving the funding strategy that is instrumental to the implementation of the MDS Testimonial Monica Motloung: Finance trainee (see page 3). This is close to my heart as the MDS will contribute to the economy of the country, and I take pride in knowing that I am helping to make South Africa a better place. It has been an amazing journey of growth for me, both personally and career-wise. The training has exposed me to careers I never knew existed or were possible to achieve with my degree something I ll always be grateful for. TRANSNET CAREER BOOKLET 47

50 Making learning work In November 2011, I called my former Student Advisor from North West University (NWU) to enquire about job opportunities. The Student Advisor directed me to the Transnet website, and from there I applied for one of the ICT Graduate-in-Training (GIT) positions. After being shortlisted and interviewed, my learning journey with Transnet began in February I was part of a two-year programme, and while permanent employment was not guaranteed after its completion, I was exposed to various departments and users at Carlton Centre as part of the training. I worked at City Deep depot when it was launching its Navis programme, and learnt the full lifecycle of containers from their entry into the terminal through to their exit. I received hands-on training in IT, and was involved in various projects and initiatives. We had to do quarterly presentations to HR, line management and ICT management on what we had learnt during the quarter. After completing the programme I was offered a permanent position as a video conference (VC) operator and Executive Support Specialist. My favourite part of the job is the variety of challenges it offers. No two days are the same, and I have learnt to work with all kinds of people with very different personalities at various levels in the organisation, as well as with both local and international external parties. A typical day for me starts at 7:00, and I begin with health checks of our VC boardrooms, which include troubleshooting and ensuring that equipment works and is fully functional. I also attend to new or outstanding calls for my area of responsibility, with duties including support for various devices for executive management. Users will book their VC meetings with me in advance so that I can set up in the boardrooms for them to ensure smooth communication. I also manage calls assigned to our groups and allocate them to the respective parties. Transnet offers a wonderful learning environment for graduates. Hands-on training is provided, with and experience gained in all the Testimonial Andries Lekute: ICT trainee tools needed to perform your duties. With the training and development opportunities that it provides, the organisation really invests in the future of its trainees. I would advise any trainee to be eager to learn, and always hungry for knowledge, engage with your job, and live it. Accept any task assigned to you, regardless of how simple or difficult it may be, because in the end, there is always a lesson to be learned. Most importantly, you have to be a team player and be ready always to walk the extra mile. Everything I experienced on my YPT programme met, or in some areas even exceeded, my expectations. I gained the experience I needed to perform my current job, knowledge of our customers, and of how to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction by resolving issues timeously. I never want to stop learning while working at Transnet. There is so much I have learned, and so much I can still learn about our large organisation. 48 TRANSNET

Growing in communications A friend forwarded me a job advertisement for the Transnet Graduate-in- Training programme, which is now known as the Young Professional-in-Training Programme and I applied. I was asked to do an assessment, after which I was called for the first and second round of interviews. I am now a Young Professionalin-Training in the Group Corporate and Public Affairs department at Transnet s head office. Our department is responsible for managing the reputation of the Company. My position includes planning and execution of corporate events and campaigns, media monitoring, managing sponsorships and donations on behalf of Transnet, managing the Group Chief Executive s interviews with the media, managing Transnet s social media pages, communicating with stakeholders across the organisation, coordinating events across the country, branding and writing editorial for our internal newsletters and ers. I am learning how to engage in all aspects of corporate communication. I have also learned more about the significance of managing a company s reputation. This entails the pro-active management of reputation risk, as well as appropriate reactive responses to reputational opportunities and threats. Being a Young Professional-in- Training is both rewarding and challenging I really feel that I am getting real world work experience and I am gaining valuable practical experience by working on projects and carrying out responsibilities that a communications specialist would ordinarily fulfil. Testimonial Nomvelo Makhunga: Young Professional-in-Training Transnet offers its trainees hands-on responsibility. All the projects that we are given are on a professional level. You get access to constant support and the programme allows you to propel your professional development. The quarterly evaluations also allow you to touch base with your managers on your performance and to get feedback and guidance. The experience and training has been valuable and I am truly grateful for this opportunity. I never thought it would be this exciting and I honestly feel as if I am being offered a dynamic opportunity that will enable me to obtain the necessary skills that will assist me to grow and develop within the Company. 52 Testimonial Menzi Dlomo: Young Professional-in-Training I am a Young Professionalin-Training at Group Company Secretariat. My role entails effective and sound records management, working to maintain best records management practices in both electronic and paper-based media. I also assist in coordinating the implementation of the Electronic Content Management System (ECM), in compliance with corporate governance practices. I became a trainee at Transnet by applying for the position, and going through some interviews which I found somewhat nerve-wracking because of the competition with other applicants. In my job I can take advantage of the opportunity that Transnet offers its trainees to develop their careers by exposing them directly to their respective areas of expertise. The company continually encourages you to acquire more skills and knowledge through its Individual Development Plan. The favourite part of my job is the fact that everything is geared towards achieving the objectives of the unit I serve. Being part of a team in this way makes you feel that you have a role to play, and something to contribute to the pursuit of the objectives of the department and the Market Demand Strategy. A typical day will include dealing with requests from clients to assist them in their own lines of work. My advice to trainees would be to do whatever you do to the best of your ability, because nobody but you yourself owes you anything, and the only person who can stand in the way of your success is you. 50 TRANSNET

53 I am currently employed as a Commodity Specialist at iscm Strategic Sourcing. Our core business is procuring strategic or high-value commodities from the market with the use of an open tender process. We develop sourcing strategies, perform tender adjudications and evaluations, negotiate with suppliers, award business and develop contracts. We put long-term contracts in place that will ensure security of supply for company business operations. My team works with contracts across the whole Transnet Group. My journey with Transnet began in 2012, when I was based in Durban, I had a friend who was employed at Transnet and who kept forwarding me notices of vacancies. When I saw one for the iscm Trainee programme, it was like love at first sight. I knew that the job was for me, and although the advertisement was for a twoyear contract, I was willing to take the risk. I dusted off my CV and applied via . I was called for the first round of selections, which was in the form of a two-hour test, and I was successful. For the next round, a formal interview, I had to take the bus to Johannesburg, and to my surprise, when I was already on my way back to Durban, I received a call telling me not to leave Johannesburg because I would need to do background and fingerprint checks. The rest is history. Transnet has offered me many opportunities, from SAP and Advanced Excel training, to a Business Analysis course and Project Management courses. The experience is priceless, especially because I am given the responsibility to source high-value commodities that are key for Transnet operations. This gives me a sense of responsibility and I feel that I add immense value to the business. The business processes of the Transnet supply chain rank very highly among other South African companies, and I believe that the wealth of experience I am gaining at Transnet will take my career beyond any limits. The best part of my job is travelling across the country meeting suppliers and entrepreneurs who inspire me by owning their own businesses. I enjoy negotiations with those suppliers I work together with Transnet business people from the various operating divisions in sourcing the commodities they need to keep the Transnet business running. Testimonial Mzamo Manzini: Young Professional-in-Training A typical day for me begins when I check which reports are due during the week, as I do most of the monthly and weekly reporting for my team. I then check which meetings I have scheduled with suppliers. After that I work on pending tender transactions that are assigned to me, doing market research and completing my strategy for that transaction. On a day-to-day basis I also manage contracts, solve queries and engage relevant stakeholders. I would recommend to any new trainee that you get your work done at all times and on time, at the best quality you can. Learn people-skills, have respect and be proactive by bringing new ideas on how things can be done. If ever you do not understand the tasks or outputs you have to perform let your manager know and ask for help. You might misunderstand instructions, but you are always capable of performing. I provide and vet financial and non-financial information to enable effective pricing decisions. After I completed my post-graduate studies, I was assigned to the CAT programme through the SAICA Thuthuka programme, which Transnet is one of the sponsors. The CAT programme gave me practical experience as I was rotated between various business units and I met different managers, enabling me to learn to adapt to a range of managerial styles. For me, it was very sound preparation for the business world. The CAT programme allows you to apply yourself through a hands-on approach to your activities. Each trainee is allocated a mentor, a person with whom you can share both your personal and career opinions. You are also provided with academic support as well as interpersonal skills courses such as exam technique and soft skills. A typical day for me consists of receiving submissions and price enquiries. The first thing I do in the morning is check my s for these, and then during the day I review the process submitted to ascertain that everything has been prepared according to the pricing policy. If I pick up queries, I follow up on them until they are resolved and I vet the prices for approval. Testimonial Nkonzo Nyumbeka: CAT trainee The best part of my job is that I get to meet people from different qualification backgrounds like lawyers and engineers on a daily basis during our price determination discussions. My advice to any prospective trainee is to take your training seriously. It enabled me to better adapt to change and to work well with colleagues with different managerial methods and from diverse cultures. There is so much to learn and so many experienced professionals that are willing to share knowledge. What is a typical day like in your line of work? The days are not the same, most of them are busy. Network while you are at it; and Manage your training time wisely to avoid extensions. Also learn to apply what you learn throughout your training in the exams, practical knowledge comes in handy for the qualifying examination 2. 63 Navigating for life As a marine pilot, I am qualified to navigate vessels in and out of the harbour. To do this I direct not only the vessels themselves, but the tugboats that assist them. I began my studies with a year at Cape Peninsula University (CPUT), and got the opportunity to do my practical training at sea for approximately two years, sailing around the world on board container ships. On completing my practical training, I sat for an oral exam with the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) where I received my Deck Officer Class 3 Certificate, which meant I could navigate any vessel to any destination. I did tug master training at the Port of Cape Town for approximately two years, which involved studying theory at the Maritime School of Excellence in Durban. This included two weeks of practical training in Rotterdam. I completed my practical tug-handling training at the Port of Cape Town, where, in acquiring the necessary skills, I had the opportunity of sailing with various pilots in different sized vessels. I again sat for an oral exam with SAMSA, which awarded me my Master Port Operations Certificate. With an assessor having evaluated my tug-handling skills, I worked as a tug master for nearly two years. I was then granted the opportunity to become a trainee pilot in the Port of Ngqura where I had relocated after passing as tug master. The beauty of piloting is that each day holds something different the weather, vessels and personnel, change all the time, so a typical day would always see me walk off the vessel smiling. Testimonial Abongile Sobuwa: Maritime Pilot Transnet offers a very good training environment with mentors to guide trainees and the platform, which produces highly skilled people. My advice to any new trainee would be to know your goals, and be determined to work diligently towards them. It takes a lot of effort and discipline, but the reward is worth it. I certainly would never have done anything differently, especially when I see how captains are astonished to come across a female pilot! 64 MARITIME SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE Flying the dream I am a helicopter pilot at Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). It was my lifelong ambition to follow a career in aviation. When I joined the programme in June 2013, seven months after it had commenced, the late start affected my training in a very positive manner. I was fired with determination and appreciation at having been given the opportunity, and was determined to prove to all those who had placed their faith in me, that it was not in vain. I always knew that despite the daunting challenge, with hard work I could catch up with the programme. I completed my first solo flight on 29 July 2013, and gained my commercial pilot s licence on 29 November 2013.I also successfully passed my third-year exams in Transport Management at the University of Johannesburg, reaffirming my belief in the saying It s not where you come from; it s where you want to be. I believe that you have to set goals, for yourself, prepare well, remain focused and take pride in all that you do. Now, having achieved my goal of becoming a commercial pilot, I firmly believe that it s time to raise the bar to something greater. Being a helicopter pilot at TNPA is just my first step on the ladder of success at Transnet. Because the organisation has put its faith and trust in me to achieve this initial stage, I am determined to honour this and prove that I can achieve so much more. I love my job for a number of reasons. It is one of great responsibility that is why planning is so important and it is always interesting. Seeing the beautiful country from the air is exhilarating and exciting, and I have a scarce skill that can be enhanced only by experience. Testimonial Mark Bassier: TNPA Helicopter Pilot Trainee Most importantly, as a helicopter pilot I can be used to rescue people and save lives, and assist in combating crime by recovering hijacked and stolen vehicles. I can fly to remote places, inaccessible to average vehicles, to reach injured, crippled and sick people. In a nutshell, I can help to make the world a better place. I have been inspired by senior managers at TNPA and their achievements and I aspire to emulate their example. Who knows? Perhaps one day, in this ever-changing world, I will be in a position to afford others the opportunities similar to or even greater than the ones I have been given. 62 TRANSNET
