15 EMBROIDERY Embroidery has a rich potential for income generation and can be considered as an ever growing skill due to constantly changing market trends. Hand embroidery is probably the most valued garment-related skill in local, national and international markets. Hand embroideries are usually made by rural women in Pakistan. However, despite the huge demand, the artisans themselves often earn little as they have limited access to and knowledge about markets. In addition to their lack of information about prices, local artisans also often lack knowledge about the latest trends. Traditional embroidery needs to be adapted to reflect changing taste in terms of colours, designs and packaging. With appropriate training these women will be enabled to produce embroidered items that can be sold on local and regional markets for higher prices.they will also be able to develop simple business plans and create market linkages. This will enable them to earn better incomes for themselves and for their families. Functional/Technical Competencies Graduates of this course will learn the following functional competencies. 1. Operate foot and electric embroidery machine. 2. Make different hand, adda and machine embroidery stitches. 3. Develop basic designs in embroidery. 4.
