2 Engineering AS from CaÑada & College of San Mateo Engineering is one of the largest professions in the United States, with over one million jobs in fields ranging from airplane design to pollution control. The three largest branches of engineering are electrical, mechanical, and civil. All branches of engineering place a heavy emphasis on problem solving and mathematics. Engineering education focuses on teaching scientific and engineering concepts and their application to the creative and effective solution of problems. Major Requirements: semester units Student Story C añada College Engineering student David Alvarez (shown in the image to the right in the top row, second from the right) was selected to travel to NASA s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas this past April to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars project (NCAS). David was selected as one of 240 community college students from across the U.S. to be part of NCAS. The five-week scholars program culminated with a three-day on-site event at Johnson Space Center and offered students the opportunity to interact with NASA engineers and others as they learned about careers in Science and Engineering. While at NASA, students formed teams and established fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. Each team was responsible for developing and testing a prototype rover, forming a company infrastructure, managing a budget, and developing communications and outreach. At Cañada, David worked as a tutor in the STEM Center, is a member of the Society of Hispanic and Professional Engineers (SHPE), and plans to transfer to San Jose State as an Aerospace Engineering major this Fall. 2
3 STEM Center The STEM Center at Cañada College provides free program services and academic support for students exploring or pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) majors. The College offers a variety of STEM-related opportunities including internships, scholarships, field trips, conferences, workshops, tutoring, mentoring, clubs, and study groups. The STEM Center has been awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships in the last five years and have received more than $7 million in grant funds to support our STEM programs and students. 4 Computer Science AS-T from CaÑada Computer Science The Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Computer Science teaches students how to apply knowledge of math, science, and computer science to identify, formulate, and solve computer science problems. Students will design and perform tests and experiments, analyze and interpret data, and prepare reports summarizing the results. They will learn how to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering and computer tools necessary for engineering or computer science practice to develop a design or system given a set of requirements and specifications. Major Requirements: 30 semester units AS from College of San Mateo Computer & Information Science Computer & Information Science offers extraordinary career opportunities to individuals who possess fluency in the English language, solid keyboarding skills, and a desire to work with computers on a daily basis. Students are trained primarily on PC microcomputers and receive the finest training and experience available in areas such as programming, data communications, applications development, network support, end-user support, and hardware/systems support. This training is intended to lead to employment in the computing industry or transfer to a baccalaureate institution for continued study in the field. Major Requirements: 31 semester units 4
5 AS from College of San Mateo Computer Science Applications & Development The Computer Science Applications & Development program prepares graduates for entry-level programming positions with companies of all sizes. Program emphasis is on cultivating computer professionals who are technically competent and work well with others. Career opportunities exist in numerous businesses and industries. Typical entrylevel positions include quality assurance and systems testing, and frequently involve working on project teams. Major Requirements: semester units AS from College of San Mateo Web & Mobile Application Development The Associate in Science (AS) degree in Web & Mobile Application Development provides students with the specialized knowledge that is essential in the development of Web and mobile computer applications. Students will study and gain experience with the languages and frameworks that are most commonly used in developing these applications. They will also learn fundamental principles of Web and mobile development so that they will be prepared to work with current and emerging technologies. Major Requirements: semester units 5
6 Accounting AS from CaÑada The AS degree in Accounting from Cañada College is designed to give students enough practical experience so that they can secure a position in either the public, governmental, or private accounting sector when they have completed the recommended units. Major Requirements: 27.5 semester units AA from College of San Mateo The Associate in Arts (AA) degree in Accounting prepares students for a variety of positions in the accounting field. Lower division accounting courses are required for all Business Administration degree programs. These accounting courses provide an important foundation for students who plan to transfer to a four-year bachelor's degree program. Major Requirements: 22 semester units AS from Skyline The Accounting Program at Skyline College is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Students gain the skills needed for a professional job in accounting or related fields. Many students find part-time employment in the accounting field after completing the first accounting courses in the program and continue to work while fulfilling program requirements. 7 Business Administration AS from CaÑada AA, AA-T from College of San Mateo The Business Department offers a Certificate, transfer program, and an AS degree. The Business Administration AS degree provides the foundation for students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university and includes core requirements in accounting, economics, and information systems. This degree provides students with an understanding of basic business practices, including operations, methods, and purpose, and an introduction to the major functional areas within business. AS Major Requirements: 29 semester units AA, AA-T Major Requirements: semester units AS-T from All Three Colleges The AS degree in Business Administration for Transfer is intended for students who are interested in transferring to a California State University (CSU) campus with a major in Business Administration. The Associate in Science Degree for Transfer (AS-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Major Requirements: semester units 7
8 Business Management AA from College of San Mateo Management is an essential function of every business. There are a substantial number and wide variety of management positions available, ranging from first-line supervisor and store manager to division manager and chief executive officer. Managers need to have technical knowledge as well as interpersonal, communications, and conceptual skills. They spend much of their time making business planning and operational decisions as well as delegating specialized tasks and responsibilities to subordinates. Managers are responsible for business performance and must lead and motivate their subordinates to accomplish business goals and objectives. Major Requirements: 24 semester units AS from Skyline The Business Management degree is designed for students who are interested in a baccalaureate or a professional degree in business, marketing, education, or training, as well as for students preparing for career entry positions. The Business Management program combines management, accounting, communication, and computer skill courses along with additional business and economic courses to prepare a person to assume a management position. 9 Economics AA from CaÑada AA-T from CaÑada & College of San Mateo Economics is the study of production, consumption, and allocation decisions under conditions of scarcity. Economics has two sub-disciplines: Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. Macroeconomics looks at the performance of the economy as a whole. Students study topics such as economic growth, inflation, changes in employment and unemployment, trade performance with other countries, and the relative success or failure of government economic policies and the policies made by the Federal Reserve. Microeconomics looks at economics at the level of individual consumers, groups of consumers, or firms. The general concern of microeconomics is the efficient allocation of scarce resources between alternative uses. Microeconomics looks at the determination of price through the optimizing behavior of consumers and firms; with consumers seeking to maximize happiness and firms, profit. AA Major Requirements: 18 semester units AA-T Major Requirements: semester units Marketing Management AA from College of San Mateo This program is designed for individuals working at the supervisory level and for those interested in supervisory positions. Upon completion of the degree requirements, students will be able to critically analyze marketing management concepts and principles in business situations. They will be able to define marketing, explain different marketing strategies, and describe how to apply marketing to the global marketplace. Major Requirements: 24 semester units 9
10 Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management AS from CaÑada The Business Department prepares students for both entry-level positions and management positions in retail. Students are prepared to plan, organize, direct, and manage employees in a variety of settings. Individuals with Management knowledge find work in a variety of industries with a variety of duties. They may manage direct reports or projects, specialize in certain areas, such as inventory management or reorganizing corporate structures to eliminate inefficiencies. Some specialize in a specific industry, such as healthcare or telecommunications. In government it s usually specialized by a type of agency. The AS degree is for those students who wish to become a new business owner and/or update their skills as a current business owner. The AS degree is designed to assist students in the development of a small business. Major Requirements: 30 semester units Certificate of Achievement from Skyline Entrepreneurship Career Certificate from Skyline This program prepares existing or potential entrepreneurs in a wide variety of small business functions. The following key areas are emphasized: Financial Management, Small Business Management, International Marketing, and Business Law. Students will prepare a comprehensive business plan with up-to-date approaches to small business management including: financial management, marketing management, business law, and how to profitably operate a small business. This certificate is intended for students and nonbusiness majors who have aspirations and goals in business that will require entrepreneurial and small business management skills. 11 International Logistics AS from Skyline The International Logistics Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Logistics includes the transportation, freight, warehousing, delivery, and moving goods from producers to customers. Skyline s Logistics Program prepares students for employment, continuing education, and advancement in the field of Logistics. Major Requirements: semester units International Trade AS from Skyline The International Trade Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). International Trade involves activities related to the global exchange of goods and services to satisfy needs. These activities include acquiring, developing and managing physical, financial, and human resources. Skyline s program prepares students for many exciting careers in the global business environment.
