1 Study Rules Version: General Successful completion of the BDPEMS requires the student to obtain 90 ECTS before the defence of the thesis. This requirement corresponds to three semesters full time course work. The BDPEMS study program regularly covers two years (four semesters). 2. First Year Studies At least 54 study points have to be obtained in core subjects during the first year. Core subjects are: Microeconomics (18 ECTS) Macroeconomics (18 ECTS) Management Science (18 ECTS) Econometrics (18 ECTS) Students have to choose three out of these four subjects. The subject Econometrics is compulsory in any case. The individual core subjects consist of the following courses: Microeconomics o Microeconomics I [winter term, 9 ECTS] o Microeconomics II [summer term, 9 ECTS] Macroeconomics o Macroeconomics I [winter term, 9 ECTS] o Macroeconomics II [summer term, 9 ECTS] Management Science o Management Science I [winter term, 9 ECTS] o Management Science II [summer term, 9 ECTS] Econometrics The econometric curriculum consists of two possible tracks: A Standard Track and a Beginner s Track. The Standard Track is appropriate for students who already have a sound basis in econometric methods (linear regression, maximum likelihood, instrumental variables estimation). It consists of o Econometrics I (Time Series Analysis) [winter term, 9 ECTS] o Econometrics II [summer term, 9 ECTS]
2 Students, who have only insufficient knowledge in basic econometrics, can apply for the Beginner s Track consisting of o Econometric Methods (Master Course) [winter term, 9 ECTS] o Econometrics II [summer term, 9 ECTS] o Further econometric courses to be taken at latest in 3 rd semester [6 ECTS] To apply for the Beginner s Track students have to send an informal application to the BDPEMS director justifying their requirement for basic econometric education. If students do not apply for this track, they automatically have to pass the Standard Track. 3. Second Year Studies In the second year, students can choose the residual points (to obtain 90 ECTS in total) out of regular BDPEMS elective courses, BDPEMS block courses or summer schools (irregularly offered, typically by external lecturers) suitable courses in other fields (up to approval from the program director), soft skill courses or from own teaching (max. 12 ECTS). Students can choose among various elective courses (including remaining core courses). These courses might be arbitrarily combined (dependent on research interests) and/or might be taken in structured form in order to specialize in the following major areas: Interdependencies in the regulation of markets (provided by the Research Training Group 1659) Behavioral & Experimental Economics Finance (provided by the Humboldt Graduate School of Business) Accounting (provided by the Humboldt Graduate School of Business) Econometrics & Statistics Quantitative Labor Public Economics 4. Maximal Length of Studies The first-year courses are expected to be finished during the first year. If students do not finish the required 54 ECTS out of first-year courses within maximally two years, they are automatically exmatriculated from the program. Likewise, if students do not complete the entire 90 ECTS within maximally four years, they are automatically exmatriculated from the program. Exemptions to these rules are possible in case of justifiable reasons (e.g., certain private circumstances) but have to be approved by the program director. To apply for such an exemption, students have to send an informal application to the program director. 5. Grading Scheme Courses are graded according to the following scale: very good: good: satisfactory: sufficient:
3 fail: 5.0 Credits are only given if the grade is sufficient (4.0) or better. 6. Exams Examinations take place according to the schedule published by the examination office of the respective university during the semester. Students are responsible for correctly noting the times and places for their examinations. In addition, students must take into account all changes made by their professor during the term. There is only one exam date for each course. Registration for examinations is done online ( and only possible during the time period set by the BDPEMS office. Students who do not have registered for an exam might not be allowed participating in the exam. If a student is unable to attend an examination because of illness or (s)he does not pass the exam, it is in the student's own responsibility to contact the corresponding lecturer for participating in an exam retake. This is not organized by the BDPEMS. Accordingly, there is no sign-up for exam retakes on the BDPEMS website. If the lecturer is willing to offer the student an exam retake and the student signs up for this exam, (s)he is obliged to inform the BDPEMS office. There is no automatic right to participate in a retake. In case of absence of a student for a registered examination, the student has to submit a medical certificate to the BDPEMS office within eight days, otherwise the examination is counted as failed and graded with 5.0. Students should mark their BDPEMS matriculation number and the examination for which they report sick on the medical certificate. During the examination, the respective rules of the faculty apply. Students are obliged to clearly document on the exam that they are BDPEMS students and have to write their BDPEMS immatriculation number on the exam paper. Not correctly labelled exams might not be graded. 7. Performance Criteria (a) Students are entitled to supervision by a researcher participating in the BDPEMS if they achieve an average grade of good (2.0) or better in the core subjects (54 study points obtained in the first year of participation). Students who fail to achieve this goal may proceed to the dissertation stage, but it is their own responsibility to find a supervisor. (b) To have the right to apply for financial support (e.g., travel grants), students need to have completed the firstyear courses and need to have found a supervisor. 8. Semester Reports Students are obliged to deliver a self-report each semester. The deadlines are March 31 for the winter term and August 31 for the summer term. Students have to completely (!) fill out a corresponding document which is provided by the BDPEMS office. Students who do not deliver complete and correct reports before the indicated deadlines, might be excluded from the program. 9. Approval of External Courses Credit points that students obtained from other universities can be approved by the corresponding "field coordinators". For the approval, students have to fill in the document Approval of external academic performances for BDPEMS students. This document has to be sent to the corresponding field coordinator. The
4 coordinator decides whether the course is equivalent to the corresponding course in BDPEMS. Then, the student has to send the signed document to the director of BDPEMS. The field coordinators are: Macroeconomics: Prof. Burda Microeconomics: Prof. Strausz Management Science: Prof. Heidhues Econometrics/Statistics: Prof. Hautsch Generally, courses are approved without grades. Students' BDPEMS study performance is evaluated only based on courses which have been passed within the program. 10. Fast Track for Bachelor Graduates Bachelor graduates have to take additional courses in order to obtain a master's degree from one of Berlin's universities. They have to apply both for BDPEMS and for a fast track master program where BDPEMS courses are imputed. Currently, possible programs are the Master in Economics & Management Science (MEMS), the Master in Economics or the Master in Business Administration at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Students who choose the fast track are enrolled as master's students while credits awarded from BDPEMS courses count both for the completion of the master's studies and the BDPEMS program. Students entering the program with a bachelor's degree are expected to finish their doctoral degree (including a master s degree) after about five years. 11. Student s responsibility Students are obliged to inform the BDPEMS office about any changes in their contact data as well as their scholarship status and to update their profile on accordingly. List of BDPEMS Electives as of April 2012 Advanced Monetary Economics Analytical Accounting Research Auctions and Market Design Bargaining Theory Behavioral Economics Economic Theory of Political Decisions Empirical Accounting Research Empirical Labor Economics Empirical Methods in Accounting and Finance Experimental Economics Experiments and the design of matching markets Finance and Accounting Seminar Financial Econometrics Financial Economics I: Contracts and Intermediation Financial Economics II: Corporate Finance Financial Economics III: Asset Pricing Financial Markets Regulation (RTG) Labor Markets with Search and Matching Frictions
