1 USSRC UFT Labs Theme: Exploring the Solar System fall only - Lunar Landers Grades K-2 Overview: Students learn and review basic facts about the Moon, and learn about the spacecraft that were used to go to the Moon in the past and ideas of what is currently being designed to return to deep space. Students learn about craters and how they are formed. They will create two craters of their own in flour and compare them. Students also create a landscape of play-doh and label the parts of the crater. Grades 3-5 Overview: Students discuss items required for life and how the resources for those things could be found on other solar system bodies. Students test soil samples looking for resources and conditions that would allow for the creation and sustainment of a colony. 2 SC.4.1, SC.4.8, SC.4.8.1, SC.4.8.2, SC.4.OV1 SC.5.3, S.C Crater Creators Grades 6-8 Overview: Students discuss what is already known about the Moon, past trips to the Moon and reasons to explore space including places beyond the Moon. The activity portion of the lab studies the Lunar landscape, especially how craters came to be on the Moon and why they vary in size. Students will study potential and kinetic energy, and how the size of an impactor and its speed affect the size of a crater on any solar system body. 4 - PS 3, 4 - PS 3-4 MS - PS 2-1, MS - PS 2-2, MS - PS 2-4, MS- PS 2-5 MS - PS 3-1, MS-PS 3-2, MS - PS 3-5 Math 6.SP.1, 6.SP.2, 6.SP.3 7.SP.1, 7.SP.2, 6.EE.A.2 RST.6-8.3, RST.6-8.7, SL.8.1 ACOS CCRS (Science) SC.6.10, SC.8.1, SC.8.1.1, SC.8.7, SC New Horizons - Delayed Communication Grades 9-12 In 2006, NASA launched a spacecraft to explore the area of Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Since the launch of the spacecraft, Pluto has been re-categorized as a dwarf planet and the existence of 5 Moons has been verified. The craft s 9 year journey will finally have it approaching Pluto in July We ll study the discovery of Pluto, the mission of New Horizons and how the data will be returned to Earth. The lab activity centers on how messages are sent to space craft, the timing involved and the difference in travel speeds of light and other materials. : 4 PS 4-1, 4-3; 3-5 ETS 1-1; 1-2; 1-3 HS PS-4-, HS PS 4-3 : Lieracy: 4. In line rockets and the Space Shuttle are compared, and Newton s laws are covered as they relate to rocket launch and motion. Students work in pairs to create paper rockets that are launched on our air pressure launcher. 2

Discussion includes education and personality traits of successful astronaut candidates, types of work done in space, basic living in space topics and teamwork. Students work in teams to mix chemicals in a glovebox just like astronauts. The Mars Rovers are introduced and students learn how they arrived on the planet. Students build a rover of their own and learn how Newton s Third Law of Motion will make it move. If time provides, students get to race their rovers to see who s travels best.
