3 INTRODUCTION BY PROFESSOR GEOFFREY PETTS, VICE-CHANCELLOR The University of Westminster is proud of its scholarship scheme, which supports students from diverse backgrounds and from many different countries. The scholarship scheme has now been running in a major way for 11 years and we are seeing the fruits of our investment. Many of our former scholars have contributed vastly to their countries and communities and of course we have enabled many to secure a future for themselves and their families, which would not have been possible without the opportunities given by the scholarship scheme. Last year we appointed our first Patron of the scheme, the Maharani of Gwalior. The Maharani was our guest of honour at the November 2011 scholarships reception in London and launched our new India scholarships in New Delhi in April 2012 during the celebrations to open our India office. We are most grateful to Her Highness for her continued interest and support. I take this opportunity to thank all our donors, whether individuals, businesses or charities that have helped so much with our work, and we hope further partners will be forthcoming to enable us to help even more students to fulfil their dreams and assist their countries and communities. Given the global financial climate it is essential that we attract further funding from outside the University to the scheme. There are several new and exciting changes to Westminster s Scholarships scheme in 2012/13. We welcome our final Olympic handover scholars from China. These were established to celebrate the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London. We intend to carry on this theme with handover scholarships for Brazilians to welcome the games to Rio de Janerio. This year we also welcome our first students from North Korea. This is through a joint venture with Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), which is North Korea s first privately funded university, and is partly funded by associations and people outside the country, in particular from China and the USA. We have also taken the opportunity to develop a number of new scholarships to extend the range of the programme. We have introduced scholarships for graduate diplomas and scholarships to assist South Sudan in its transition to new nationhood, to mention but two. The UK s National Scholarships Programme is also being launched in We hope with your support to continue to expand the opportunities we are able to give students in the future. Professor Geoffrey Petts BSc, PhD, FRGS, FRSA Vice-Chancellor 3
4 SUPPORTING EXCELLENCE IN NEED EDUCATION TRANSFORMING FUTURES Education has an unrivalled ability to change lives, both for those who have the opportunity to study, and for those who benefit from their knowledge. Making knowledge widely accessible was one of the founding principles of the Royal Polytechnic Institution, University of Westminster s original incarnation. It is a principle that we adhere to today, with a student body that is incredibly diverse in culture, nationality and background. Philanthropy has played a vital role in supporting our students from the very beginning, when Quintin Hogg made his educational endowment to establish the Regent Street Polytechnic. We remain dedicated to making it possible for outstanding students who could not access higher education without our help to realise their potential. Our students explore the fields of creative industries, business, law, humanities, life sciences, and computing and electronics. Our staff and alumni have made their mark in many fields, and our current students will go on to shape professional life of the future, and change lives for the better, both in the UK and internationally. Now you can play a key role in that change. THE LEADING UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME IN THE UK Today, about 750 students at our University benefit from scholarships every year. Around a quarter of this support comes from external sources. However, every year we also have to turn down at least a further 3,000 good scholarship applicants. We want to address this by providing an additional 100 scholarships annually, and we need philanthropic support to achieve that goal. Our scholarships scheme has been praised for its diverse, flexible and innovative approach to supporting students. A scrupulous award process based on clear criteria is followed by continual pastoral care for beneficiary students. The scheme s success has been recognised by the Award for Outstanding Support for Overseas Students from the Times Higher Education magazine. MAKE A DIFFERENCE, TOUCH A LIFE Now more than ever, maintaining our ability to change lives through access to higher education will depend on philanthropic support for scholarships. By helping us to extend the scholarships scheme, you will be providing opportunities for a diverse and vibrant student community. You will be changing lives and enabling them to improve the lives of many others, at a time of uncertainty for all, and when financial limits may prevent many promising students from pursuing higher education. Your contribution could be shaped flexibly and linked to a particular school, department or course, should you wish to do so. 4 5

PROFESSOR MOORAD CHOUDHRY In 2011 the Professor Moorad Choudhry Scholarship was set up in support of Westminster Business School undergraduate students from the UK. The scholarship is awarded to two scholars every three years. The scholarship has been made possible through the generosity of Professor Moorad Choudhry, who graduated in 1988 with a Social Sciences BA (Hons) from the Polytechnic of Central London, the University of Westminster s predecessor. Professor Choudhry is a finance specialist and author whose career has spanned the banking industry and academia. This is what he told us about what has motivated him to support next generations of students: Coming to study at Central London Poly, as it was then known, was one of the better decisions I ve made in my life. I especially remember the friendly atmosphere and the excellence of the academic staff. I m proud to be as sociated with the University of Westminster. 8 RECENT DEVELOPMENTS MAHARANI OF GWALIOR SYLVIA PANKHURST ROBERT MITCHELL SOCIETY NSP Her Highness the Maharani of Gwalior has graciously agreed to become Patron of the Scholarships programme. Her Highness was the guest of honour at the International Scholarships Reception in November 2011 in London and launched our new Indian scholarships in New Delhi in April of We are very grateful to Her Highness for her continuing interest in and assistance with our work. DIRECTOR OF SCHOLARSHIPS After over 11 years at the helm of the scholarships programme, the Director of Scholarships, Colin Matheson, has retired to a cottage by the sea. The members of the Scholarships team, current students and University staff would like to thank him for all of the great work he has done in developing the University of Westminster Scholarships Programme over the past 11 years. We wish him well on his retirement. The Scholarships Office will now form part of the University s Student Funding Office. NORTH KOREA For the first time the University will welcome two students from North Korea on scholarship this year. This collaboration with Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, a private, partly American, Chinese and South Korean funded university, will enable the students to study a Masters programme and experience life outside North Korea for the first time. With the agreement of the Pankhurst family, and in association with the Jethro Institute of Good Governance, the University is offering a full scholarship to an Ethiopian student in memory of Sylvia Pankhurst. Whilst her work as a suffragette is well known, less so is Ms Pankhurst s support for Ethiopia, both during and after the 1935 Italian occupation. She responded to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia by publishing The New Times and Ethiopia News from 1936, and became a supporter of the Emperor, Haile Selassie. Additionally, she raised funds for Ethiopia s first teaching hospital and wrote extensively on Ethiopian art and culture; her research was published as Ethiopia, a Cultural History (London: Lalibela House, 1955). Pankhurst became a friend and adviser to the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. She died in 1960, and was given a full state funeral at which Haile Selassie named her an honorary Ethiopian. She is the only foreigner buried in front of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, in the area reserved for patriots of the Italian war. SANTANDER TRAVEL AWARDS As part of a much larger donation of 40,000 Santander Bank has given the university 5,000 for student travel awards. These will allow the less well-off student to access course, career and other appropriate opportunities abroad. We are grateful to Santander for this generous donation. SCHOLARSHIPS OFFICE Liz Dye, one of the longstanding members of the Scholarships Office team, has left to pursue her career aspirations in Brazil. We all wish her well. Her role has now been filled by Charlotte Regan, who we welcome to the department. The University is delighted to announce the launch of a new society to recognise the support of those individuals who make an annual charitable gift of 1,000 or more towards student support. The society is named after Robert Mitchell as a great symbol of both those who have benefitted from and those who have supported education. Having had little schooling as a child, Robert Mitchell was fortunate enough to enter into Quintin Hogg s Young Men s Christian Institute, which later developed into the Regent Street Polytechnic. He then went on to dedicate over 50 years of his life to the success of the Polytechnic, becoming the organisation s first secretary and later its first Director of Education (the Vice-Chancellor of the day). By joining the Robert Mitchell Society and contributing to the scholarships fund, members will be helping us change lives through providing access to higher education. If you would like to find out more about the Robert Mitchell Society and how to join, please contact the Development Office by phone or [email protected]. 9 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS ASIF KHAN UNITED KINGDOM ARCHITECTURE BA HONOURS RECIPIENT OF THE COSMUR ARCHITECTURE SCHOLARSHIP PAUL CONWAY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR COSMUR CONSTRUCTION Cosmur Architecture Scholarship offers a full scholarship for an undergraduate student of architecture over three years, along with an opportunity to take up work placements at Cosmur or facilitated by Cosmur. The Cosmur Scholarship eased my mind and has brought peace to me as a student. It meant that I did not have to squeeze my pocket so hard that my education would be restricted by my wealth. The costs of student life are already building up, and with a single parent it is a great opportunity to have the tuition fees washed away, clearing any worrying thoughts in the present and the future for both me and my mum. Businesses and organisations should continue to support students at Westminster through the scholarship programme, to ensure that genuinely devoted students are not shackled by university fees and living costs. DONOR Cosmur is a medium-sized construction company. We do a wide variety of work, from large gallery projects down to single house refurbishment, mostly in London and within the M25. We consider ourselves essentially to be a London company and we wanted to contribute back to London. It seemed to us that the University would be a good partner to work with, because it works with the kind of people and offers the kind of opportunities that we would like to see ourselves doing; it seemed like a natural fit. There are not many other people doing this sort of thing in London at the moment. The final thing that really convinced us to sponsor a scholarship was that the fees increase would make it much more difficult for the sort of person we hope will take advantage of this sponsorship to cope with. We felt it s important for firms like ourselves or other organisations to stand up and do something to help, if they can. With the opportunities available in our company and other people that we work with we hope we can give someone a real start to their career and a proper lift up the ladder
10 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UK/EU STUDENTS PROFESSOR MOORAD CHOUDHRY FOUNDER PROFESSOR MOORAD CHOUDHRY SCHOLARSHIPS I ve got fond memories of my time at what was then the Polytechnic of Central London: it was a good degree, it gave me a good choice, I remember one or two members of staff there who were excellent. I just thought I d like to give something back. Of course, now it s the University of Westminster, the market is going to become very competitive, the students no longer have what I had in the 80s a government grant and no tuition fees and so I thought, OK let me support that. Higher education is a very important part of one s development. These are the formative years and it s a shame that tuition fees are coming in; everyone should have a chance both to develop themselves educationally and to reach emotional maturity. I hope the scholarship encourages someone who isn t able to afford the fees and would be put off from studying economics, business or finance to consider doing it. Time as an undergraduate is also important in putting yourself at the forefront of the competitive space in the job environment, which is only going to get harder. My message to the recipients would be to get the most out of the time at university. I do think that everyone s target should be to get a First, aim to do the very best you possibly can. We re always learning for the rest of our lives, so use this as a springboard to go on to do bigger and better things. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UK/EU STUDENTS THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER OFFERS TWO MAIN SCHEMES FOR UK/EU UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS The National Scholarship Programme and the Westminster Undergraduate Scheme. While you are allowed to make an application for both scholarships, no applicants will be awarded more than one scholarship through our scholarships programme. To be eligible to apply for our scholarships, you must first have been offered either a conditional or unconditional place on an undergraduate course at the University of Westminster. Most offers of scholarships will be made conditional on students achieving required grades, which is usually a higher standard than the entry requirements for the undergraduate course. The Scholarships Office aims to notify students of the result of their scholarships application before the date on which they have to make their final choice of university, usually May. Please note that expectations of academic excellence and creativity may vary slightly from course to course, depending on course entry standards. This is to ensure that scholarships are fairly spread across the university s courses and not clustered in high entry qualification areas. The Scholarships Office intends to launch online scholarships applications for UK/EU undergraduate scholarship applicants this year, so please visit our website for further instructions on the application process at westminster.ac.uk/scholarships 1. 27 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PART-TIME STUDENTS YASMIN MOHAMED EGYPT INTERNATIONAL LAW LLM RECIPIENT OF VICE-CHANCELLOR GEOFFREY PETTS SCHOLARSHIP SCHOLAR I graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, and for two years I followed my passion and worked with human rights through different NGOs in the fields of women s empowerment, refugee rights and social entrepreneurship. When the Egyptian revolution broke out I realised that after the very important hands-on experience I had gained over those two years, it was time to consolidate my experience with academic studies so that I could benefit my country more in the fields of human rights law, preservation and advocacy. I decided to apply for the University of Westminster because of its research facilities, great access to information, and professors who offer diverse perspectives and encourage independent thinking and analysis. I am very grateful for this opportunity since I wouldn t have been able to be here if it wasn t for the scholarship. The Middle East is really changing; young people now have a sense of ownership of their countries and want to do something valuable for themselves and their communities. I hope more scholarships will be offered to young people from the region because they have proved that if empowered they are able to drive real change

30 OTHER UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER SCHOLARSHIPS PROFESSOR MICHAEL GAUNT CHAIRMAN GUILDFORD ACADEMIC ASSOCIATES 56 TAMARA WILLIAMS JAMAICA COMPUTER SCIENCE MSc RECIPIENT OF CENTRAL AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN SCHOLARSHIPS My dedication and passion for IT led me to pursue an MSc in Computer Science, but universities in Jamaica had only a few full scholarships and no exposure to a different education system and culture. The Central America and the Caribbean Full Scholarship gave me access to education that I would not otherwise have had the opportunity to receive, and the course at the University of Westminster allowed me to customise my learning path to suit my needs. In addition, I had access to extensive knowledge from the academic staff, various software and tools in the IT labs, and presentation from external speakers. The learning experience extended beyond the classroom as I shared in the British culture and other cultures from Europe to as far as India and China, connecting me to their lives on a personal scale. My time at Westminster contributed to my overall personal and professional development because of the education attained, the friendships formed, cultures experienced and appreciation of how countries can bond by enhancing each other s life which unites us on a global scale. This is the best approach to promoting harmony between generations and nations. The charity Guildford Academic Associates (GAA) was founded in 1981 by Dr Eric and Joan Reid on their retirement from the University of Surrey. The couple were both scientists who also had a shared interest in the arts and, as research students, grew up with the Royal Ballet. Eric and Joan identified organisations and causes they wished to support. The charity quietly targeted education-related endowments in the arts and encouraged university entrance (especially female students into scientific subjects) with the aim of alleviating unforeseeable hardship. It also supported bioscientific research, largely through the Biochemical Society, and humanitarian causes in this country and abroad. I first met the Reids in 1983 when I was principal of the Guildford School of Acting, and they generously offered essential support to the Student Hardship Fund at a time when local authority awards to drama students were disappearing. Following the deaths of Joan in 2008 and Eric in 2010, the trustees and I have continued to support relevant secular charities, including funding a scholarship for a female Biosciences student at the University of Westminster. With tuition fees increasing and the careers market as competitive as ever, it s crucial that organisations such as ours continue to support those in financial hardship to achieve the best possible education. 57

What does academic excellence mean? Can I use the same application form to apply for multiple scholarships? What should I write in my statement of support? Who should write my reference and what should it contain? As an international scholarship applicant, do I have to pay the 4,000 deposit before I know if I have been awarded a scholarship? As an international student do I need to provide evidence of my English language competency? Who decides whether or not I am awarded a scholarship and how will I find out the result? What happens if I am awarded a scholarship? What do I do if I decide to defer my admission or change my course after I have been awarded the scholarship? Which countries are considered under the developing title? Where can I find information about PhD scholarships/studentships for subjects other than Life Sciences, Electronics or Computing? Where can I find my reference number? This can be found at the top of your admissions offer letter or correspondence from the University and will usually be an eight digit number. This number must be included on your scholarship application. We will not consider applications that do not include this number. If you are applying for an undergraduate degree, you can also use your UCAS application number found on all UCAS correspondence. Applicants for PhD scholarships need not fill in this space but should attach proof of acceptance of your proposal. Can I use the same application form to apply for multiple scholarships? Yes, please use the same application form even if you wish to apply for a number of scholarships. However, please remember that one of the criteria for many of our scholarships is financial need. This means you need to think carefully about whether your level of financial need is assistance with tuition fees or whether you truly require a full scholarship (if you are eligible to apply for one). If you apply for tuition fee only scholarships AND full scholarships, it will be assumed by the Scholarships Committee that you are not truly financially dependent on a full scholarship to take up your place on the course. What should I write in my statement of support? The statement of support is your opportunity to present yourself to the Scholarships Committee and demonstrate why it is that you deserve a scholarship to study at the University of Westminster. In writing your supporting statement, you should seek to describe the qualities that you think make you an outstanding applicant in a highly competitive process. Most of our scholarships are awarded on one or more of three main criteria: i) academic excellence ii) financial need iii) development potential (for international students only). Your supporting statement should therefore address How you meet the criteria What you expect to gain from the opportunity of studying your course How you intend to use your experience and knowledge in the future Your professional experience and career aspirations For UK/EU undergraduate students: For those UK/EU students applying for an undergraduate scholarship, the supporting statement should make a case for what you can bring to the University in addition to your academic capabilities and what makes you a suitable scholarship candidate. Please note that we are looking to the future, so simply listing past achievements is not sufficient. For international students applying for FULL SCHOLARSHIPS only: In addition to demonstrating academic excellence and financial need, international students applying for one of our full scholarships also need to evidence development potential and explain, specifically and in detail, how you envisage using the knowledge and experience gained from your course in the development of your community/region/nation upon your return to your home country after completing. Who should write my reference and what should it contain? The reference letter should be written by someone of stature who knows you well in either an academic or professional capacity, ie a teacher, lecturer or employer. Choose your referee carefully. Think of the letter as an integral part of a package that will present an accurate and complete picture of you, your background and why it is felt that you are eligible for a scholarship. The reference should, where possible, be written on the headed paper of the school, university, organisation or company and be included with your application in a sealed envelope. The reference provided as part of your scholarship application should be written specifically in support for your scholarship application, i.e. you should not use the same reference that you supplied for your admission application. The referee should provide their views on why your academic abilities, personal qualities and financial circumstances would make you a suitable recipient for a scholarship. It may therefore be useful to discuss your plans with your referee now, before you apply, so that they are more fully able to comment on your plans, goals and capabilities
35 DIA UGANDA VIETNAM GHANA POLAND ISRAEL EGYPT BAHAMAS CROATIA AUSTRIA JA RGENTINA FREQUENTLY NIGERIA ASKED QUESTIONS TURKEY FRANCE ITALY SWITZERLAND FREQUENTLY PAKISTAN ASKED QUESTIONS GHANA SWEDEN SR NKA SPAIN RUSSIA SOUTH AFRICA TUNISIA UNITED KINGDOM MEXICO SAINT LUCIA C 66 As an international scholarship applicant, do I have to pay the 4,000 deposit before I know if I have been awarded a scholarship? The University s deposits scheme for overseas students means that if you hold an unconditional offer you will be required to make a payment of 4,000 before you are given a student visa support letter, which may be used to apply for your visa for entry to the United Kingdom. As a scholarship applicant, you can wait until you know the outcome of your scholarship application before paying this deposit. It is recommended that you check with the British Embassy how long it takes to process visas during the July/August period. If you are awarded a scholarship that includes full tuition fee costs, you will not be required to pay this deposit and the admissions offices will be notified of this. If you are awarded a scholarship which awards part of the tuition fee costs (ie 2,000 fee award or 50 per cent fee award) you will still be required to pay this deposit. If you feel that you will come to study at the University regardless of whether or not you are awarded a scholarship, we would encourage you to pay the deposit as soon as possible. If you are later awarded a scholarship that includes full tuition fee costs, you will be entitled to a refund of this deposit. As an international student do I need to provide evidence of my English language competency? Whether or not you need to provide IELTS/ TOEFL results as part of your scholarship application depends on the type of offer you have received from the University of Westminster following your admission application. If you have been offered an unconditional place on your chosen course then you do not need to submit IELTS/TOEFL results as part of your scholarship application. If your offer is conditional and one of the conditions relates to demonstrating your English language competency, then we would expect the IELTS/TOEFL results to be included in your scholarship application. If you are required to provide IELTS/TOEFL results with your scholarship application, but your test date is after the deadline date for scholarship applications, you can send the IELTS/TOEFL results to us, separately, at a later date (as long as they are received before 15 August 2013). Who decides whether or not I am awarded a scholarship and how will I find out the result? All decisions regarding the awarding of scholarships are made by a Scholarships Committee. The Committee is made up of academic members of staff from across the University s four campuses, staff within the International Office, Academic Services, Student Advice Service and external members. All are very experienced and make the awarding decision based on the criteria for the scholarship and the case you make. Once decisions have been made, we will write to you if you are successful informing you of the outcome. If you are unsuccessful you will be contacted as far as is reasonably possible. Please note that the Committee will not undertake or participate in any individual correspondence with you, either before or after the decision has been made. The decision of the Committee is final, and is not open to appeal. Lobbying a committee member will only make you ineligible for a scholarship. What happens if I am awarded a scholarship? If you are awarded a scholarship you will be informed by initially. On confirmation of receipt of the , you will be sent an official letter from the Scholarships Office giving you the details of your award. All official arrangements will be made with you directly. You will be required to formally accept the scholarship and its conditions by signing the contract that is sent with your awarding letter. During and after your period of study you may be asked to participate in promotional activities for This may include receptions and social events, testimonial or publicity articles or even assisting with activities in your home country. During each year as a scholarship student, you will also be expected to participate in our volunteering scheme (up to a maximum of 40 hours of voluntary work per year). Students awarded joint scholarships with International Students House are expected to do ten hours per month voluntary work there. The continuation of all scholarships is based on satisfactory academic performance, the exact nature of which will be described in your award letter and Terms of Agreement. For UK/EU undergraduate students, we require all modules to be passed and an average of 60 per cent overall to be achieved. For first year students, the average is taken from six modules, the best and worst module being discounted. Postgraduate students may be required by the Scholarships Office to submit a report from your tutor or supervisor. This report may be requested after each year in the case of a PhD student, or after semester one in the case of a Masters student. What do I do if I decide to defer my admission or change my course after I have been awarded the scholarship? The scholarship must be used for the academic course and year for which it was applied. In the event of awardees deferring the year of entry the scholarship is considered cancelled. Changes of course may in some circumstances be considered. Which countries are considered under the developing title? For our purposes, the term developing includes middle income countries. All countries with the exception of the following are considered developing countries : Andorra Australia Canada Gibraltar Iceland Israel Japan New Zealand San Marino Singapore USA Vatican City and all member countries of the European Union. Where can I find information about PhD scholarships/studentships? The only PhD/research scholarship offered and administered via the University s Scholarships Office is the Cavendish Research PhD Scholarship for research related to Life Sciences, Electronics or Computing. All other PhD/research scholarships/studentships are managed by the University s Research Office, and are advertised here: westminster.ac.uk/courses/research-degrees/ research-studentships. If you have any questions regarding funding opportunities for PhD study in subjects other than Life Sciences, Electronics or Computing, please contact the University Research Office at [email protected] If you require any further information or have any more questions please contact the Scholarships Office at [email protected] 67
