1 Introduction Work Package 3 results are presented in three deliverables: - Inventory and overview of industrial courses - Inventory and overview of university courses - Industrial course offered by UFoH More detailed description of each deliverable is presented below. 2 Inventory and Overview of Industrial Courses This activity was carried out by Karin Tubbin (Swerea SWECAST) This task consisted of two parts, inventory of currently existing courses offered for stuff from industry and identification of particular needs of industry for future development of training. The latter sub-task is mostly addressed in the last deliverable of the WP3. The objective of the task was to identify currently available courses focused on joining technology for training of staff offered by research institutes (with involvement of universities). However, more general materials science courses related to polymer composites were also of interest. In total 10 courses have been identified, 9 of which are with joining technology in focus. The majority of those courses cover adhesive joining techniques, whereas there are only few courses dealing with mechanical joining (e.g. bolted joints). The summary of the findings is presented in the Table 1. The detailed information about each course with short description of course contents and link to the webpage (if available) is collected in Excel data sheet which is also part of the deliverable. The syllabus of each course (if available) is also added as appendix. 4 Rapport nr 1333 Öppen

However, it should be mentioned that there some of courses on joining of wood as well as joining metals (e.g. welding) were not included in the list. The short summary of the selected university courses dedicated to the joining is presented in Table 2. Full information about courses (with short description and link to the webpage) is collected in Excel sheet which is part of the deliverable. Most of these courses have also one-two page syllabus available and those are also added as appendix. Öppen Rapport nr
Table 2: Summary of selected university courses dedicated to joining technology. 3.2 Courses in which joining is part of the syllabus In total 12 courses were found. Some of these courses do not address joining of dissimilar materials but rather deal with joining the same materials, for example welding of metals or plastics as well as on gluing of wood. Many courses that contain joining as part of the syllabus are focusing on manufacturing of structures and structural analysis. It should be noted that number of such courses is much larger than selected in this task but it is not easy to identify course only based on the syllabus in the database of university. The short summary of the selected university courses containing joining technology in their syllabus are presented in Table 3. Full information about courses (with short description and link to the webpage) is collected in Excel sheet which is part of the deliverable. The one-two page syllabus for each course is available as appendix. 6 Rapport nr 1333 Öppen
Table 3: Summary of selected university courses containing topics on joining technology. 3.3 Courses on structures, polymers and their composites The courses from this category do not directly deal with joining technology, however, these are courses which contain crucial information that is needed for design and optimization of joints (for example, properties of polymers and their composites, design methods of lightweight structures, surface chemistry and treatments, experimental methods, numerical and analytical modeling, etc.). In total 18 courses were selected in this case. It is clear of course that there are much more of similar courses are available and the choice of the particular course can be made based on geographical location (closest to the industry university) or on particular approach to the topic in question (some of the courses address more theory, others focus more on practical issues). The short summary of the selected university courses that might be prerequisites to joining technology are presented in Table 4. Full information about courses (with short description and link to the webpage) is collected in Excel sheet which is part of the deliverable. The one-two page syllabus for each course is available as appendix. Öppen Rapport nr
Table 4: Summary of selected university courses on structures, polymers and their composites. 3.4 Concluding remarks on inventory of university courses It should be noted that all of university courses are part of some kind of Master program (or other type of higher education program) and are offered within one (or sometimes even two) semester, which normally takes up to 4-8 weeks (depending on credit points given for the course). These courses most of the time are open for outside university students (from other universities but also from industry). However, due to long duration of these courses they are not always well suited for industrial training. One solution would be to condense course syllabus according to particular industrial needs in order to be able to offer it as 1-3 days intensive course. Another possibility is to participate in the course remotely since some of these courses are web based. This possibility should be explored further to access full potential of these courses for industrial training. Even though the list of courses (industrial and university) is most likely incomplete, it makes good foundation for the inventory of the education facilities in the area of joining technology. Based on the collected information it should be possible to compile recommendation syllabus for the industrial training. Different types of such syllabus can be made. The classification can be made by types of joints (adhesive or mechanical) or by type of activity: 8 Rapport nr 1333 Öppen
- Design - Optimization - Characterization - Modeling - Processing/manufacturing Additional output from the information about the industrial and university courses could be list of the recommended literature. This list can be compiled based on the literature used in those courses. There are number of publications that are of interest for industry, for example standards (ASTM, ISO, EN etc) as well as guidebooks produced by different industries (MIL-17 handbook, BONDSHIP Guidelines, ESA Handbook, etc). Unfortunately most of these reports are not freely (or even publicly) available but it is important that people working with joining technology are aware of them. In case of course materials at universities many sources (for example textbooks, journal paper, PhD and MSc thesis, technical reports published by academia) are publicly available and some of them can be freely distributed (although often for non-commercial use only). 4 Industrial course offered by UFoH The following course was developed and offered by UFoH project for industry: Fogningsmetoder - Industrikurs i UFoH-projektet, 1-2 oktober, 2013, Swerea IVF, Göteborg. The course was organized by Karin Tubbin (Swerea SWECAST) and Magnus Burman (KTH) with participation of Anders Johansson (Scania), Bo Rendahl (Swerea KIMAB), Ola Albinsson (Swerea IVF), Tomas Luksepp (Swerea IVF) and Fredrik Stig (Semcon). 4.1 Content of the course The content of the course was based on the work carried out in the Work Package 2 with focus on adhesive and bolted joints. The corrosion also was addressed during the course since it is important issue in joint design and performance. The course was mainly directed towards design engineers from companies within the consortium of the project. Such companies could sign up for the course up to two staff members free of charge. The course also was open for companies outside of consortium for minimal fee to cover coffee and lunch breaks. The priority to join the course was given to companies within consortium. The maximum number of 30 participants was set. There were 36 participants in total (including lecturers) from 20 companies, universities and research institutes. Out of these, 15 companies were consortium partners. The automotive, aircraft and boat industries were presented as well as suppliers for these industries. Some of the participants attended only one day of the workshop but the majority was present for the whole event. Öppen Rapport nr
The content of the course is presented in the Table 5. Different topics of the course are separated by the shadings with different colors. First day of the course was dedicated to mechanical joining (e.g. bolted joints), whereas second day was mainly focused on adhesive joints and corrosion. Table 5. The content of the industrial course (different shadings correspond to different days of the course). 4.2 Course evaluation Additionally to the main objective of the course (training of industrial staff in the area of joining multi-materials) the intention was to develop course which in the future will be part of the training program within LIGHTer initiative. Therefore this course was thoroughly evaluated in order to find strong as well as weak points and make recommendation for future development of the training activities. Course evaluation sheets were completed by 28 participants. They evaluated content of the course by answering questions with appropriate grade from 1 to 4: bad, average, good, very good. The total average grade was When asked about the level of the presented information most of the participants graded it as appropriate, while five of participants thought that level was too high for them. In the free text section some participants suggested that instead of two day course it would be better to have separately one day event for mechanical and adhesive joining technology. In general it can be concluded that the course was a success and it has to be offered to industry on regular basis. All presentations given during the course as well as data for course evaluation are part of the delivery (as appendix). 10 Rapport nr 1333 Öppen
