2 2014 AN OVERVIEW After five years of recession the good news is confidence is back across the market and our clients are not only hiring for immediate requirements but investing in experience and expertise for future growth. Skills shortage We are already seeing skills shortages across many of the more common positions in the market with particularly high demand in quantity surveying, site engineering and site management as well as the key trades within our maintenance division. Although a popular area of the UK to relocate to, the South West suffers from a smaller pool of skills and experience than other regions and therefore attracting the calibre and volume of new staff has to be a key focus for businesses looking to expand. Securing the candidate Candidates now have much more choice when seeking alternative employment and your interview might be one of many they are attending. It is therefore important to create a positive overall experience when hiring staff as offering the right money often isn t enough. The interview process is fundamental in securing the staff you want. Remember selling your company is as important as questioning the candidate. If more than one interview is required then ensure future meetings are booked in quickly to make sure you maintain the momentum and interest from both parties. When you make an offer, make sure the contract is sent out in good time and if there are any delays, communicate these to the candidate/agency. Buy Backs The costs of replacing a staff member and training a new one often far outweigh offering someone more money to stay. We have seen a dramatic increase over the last six months in candidate buy backs and you need to be prepared for these to happen regularly. To prevent new starters changing their mind, consider the following: Make sure your salaries and packages are competitive. Offer the right money first time.
