2 Your health is important.
3 We all know that the health decisions you make not only affect you today, but also tomorrow. Research shows that many diseases are preventable, and that the likelihood of getting sick is greater if you have certain health risks. It s much easier to be healthy and stay that way than it is to work back toward good health after a diagnosis. But we aren t here to tell you all the reasons you should want to be healthy. We want to talk about how the Health Management program can help. 1
4 NUMBER ONE KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO WORK ON. Every year, StayWell Health Management, our wellness vendor, runs the numbers from the Health Management program and gives us an aggregate report. We don t get your individual numbers your data is personal and never shared with the company. But, we do learn our health risks as a whole and how the Health Management program is working to help us reduce those risks. Since the launch of our Health Management program, those who participated in the program are healthier as a group today than they were three years ago. As a group, they have reduced certain risk factors, like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and have improved their body mass index (BMI) numbers and cardiorespiratory fitness. 2
5 How Our StayWell Numbers Stack Up 2 60% of employees have low total cholesterol (<200 mg/dl). Most employees met 3 of 5 healthy targets during the health screening. But there s still room for improvement for those who participated and certainly for those of us who didn t. The numbers show that, as a company, we are still at risk for chronic conditions, including obesity and heart disease. There are many reasons why. One reason is that we are not eating enough of the right foods, like green vegetables. Interestingly, a recent Gallup survey shows that most Americans have the same problem. The Gallup research found that healthy eating, which is linked to lower risk for obesity, is down for all months in 2013, compared to And, it s at its lowest since The good news? Simple changes like eating better, exercising more and getting recommended screenings for your age, such as colonoscopies and mammograms can benefit everyone. Employees who participated in the Health Management program achieved a 7.4% cumulative risk reduction. 53% of employees want to get more exercise. 70% of employees are at risk for obesity. On average, employees eat only 2 vegetable servings a day and exercise 3.5 days a week well below the national guidelines. 1. Lindsey Sharpe (2013). Rockwell Automation takes your privacy very seriously. Your individual health information is not shared with Rockwell Automation; the company only gets the aggregate results for participating employees. 3
6 NUMBER TWO KNOW WHAT S NEW. For 2014, we made a few tweaks to the Health Management program. It still has the same three initiatives: a Health Risk Questionnaire (HRQ), a health screening and Take Action activities. And, yes, there are still some monetary incentives. (A little nudge in the right direction is always a good thing.) But we all know that the key to living healthy is really intrinsic motivation, not extrinsic rewards. So, we ve put more emphasis on the HRQ and revamped the Take Action activities to encourage long-term good health rather than a quick fix. Even if you aren t enrolled in a Rockwell Automation medical option, we invite you to participate. When you take care of your health and take advantage of the resources Rockwell Automation offers, we all benefit. HERE S HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS Health Risk 1 Questionnaire The Health Risk Questionnaire (HRQ) is essential to understanding your overall health and how your decisions now can affect you in the future. That s why the HRQ will be required in If you don t complete the HRQ, you ll pay an additional $100 on your 2015 medical premiums, and you won t earn any incentives for the other activities. You don t need to worry about completing the HRQ now. We ll tell you more about it later this year. 2 Health Screening The health screening measures five healthy targets blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, cardiorespiratory fitness and body mass index (BMI) that can help identify risks and track improvement before it s too late. You earn $50 for every healthy target you meet, up to $250, off your 2015 medical premiums. We ll have onsite screenings later this year at multiple locations. You can also submit the Health Care Provider Form anytime throughout the year. Just take the form to your doctor when you get your annual physical exam, or use it when you complete a Home Test Kit. You can download the form at ra.staywell.com. 4
7 Take Action 3 CHALLENGES How to Register for the New StayWell Website Beginning in January, we have some new Take Action activities that are designed to help you focus on physical activity and nutrition, which are essential to having the energy you need throughout the day. These programs use a tracking system that helps you set your own goals and record your progress. COACHING PROGRAMS If you re not sure where to start, you can sign up for the Easy Start Calls & Mailings program. This new coaching program combines two phone calls and two mailings to help you learn more about your health and which programs are right for you. You can also continue to take advantage of the traditional Phone Coaching program. StayWell Online has been relaunched to provide easier access and enhanced information about staying healthy. If you already have an account, you don t need to do anything. If you re new to the StayWell website, you ll need to complete a one-time registration to validate your account. To create an account: 1. Go to ra.staywell.com and enter your first name, eight-digit employee ID and date of birth. 2. Create a user name and password. 3. Accept the privacy agreement. Call StayWell at to begin a coaching program or for additional information about any Health Management programs. This year, you can complete two Take Action activities for up to $200 ($100 each) off your 2015 medical premiums. Two of the new Take Action online challenges are Step It Up and Time Out For Health. DON T WAIT. Start today at ra.staywell.com. 5
8 NUMBER THREE START NOW. How to Step It Up Go to ra.staywell.com and log in to the new and improved website. Click the Step It Up Challenge in the To Do list or click the Step It Up logo on the message board. On the Step It Up page, click Let s Go! Choose a program user name and sign up for optional reminders. Once you re enrolled, connect a Fitbit or start recording your activities using the Steps to Minutes Calculator! STEP IT UP Just like Get Fit on Route 66, Step It Up helps you keep track of your physical activity throughout the day. Any activity including swimming, gardening or basketball is easily converted into steps and counts toward your goal. To make it easy, you can track steps using a Fitbit that automatically syncs with the system. The Fitbit is the only tracking device that automatically syncs, but you can also self-report your activities using another pedometer or the online activity conversion tool. We will be sharing more information about how to get your Fitbit in upcoming communication. To complete this activity for $100, you need to walk the equivalent of 700,000 steps. We recommend that you set a healthy goal to take 8,500 steps every day for 12 weeks. Benefits of Exercise We all know that exercise is good for us. But did you know how good? Here are just a few of the benefits of having a regular exercise routine. With exercise, you can: 1. Improve your mood. 2. Boost your energy. 3. Improve your quality of sleep. 6
9 How to Take Time Out For Health TIME OUT FOR HEALTH Time Out For Health helps you focus on good nutrition by providing tips and guidelines, and by tracking the number of vegetable servings you eat each day. Not sure how to determine the serving size? No worries here s a quick trick to help you out. One serving of vegetables is about the size of your fist. You can find exact serving size information on food labels or nutritional websites. To complete this activity for $100, you need to eat 300 servings of vegetables. We recommend that you eat four servings of vegetables every day for about 12 weeks. Benefits of Balanced Nutrition and Eating More Vegetables Vegetables help you stay energized throughout the day. But did you know about these other benefits? Vegetables can help: 1. Reduce the risk of heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. 2. Protect against certain types of cancers. 3. Reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. 4. Lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and decrease bone loss Go to ra.staywell.com and log in to the new and improved website. 10 OTHER TAKE ACTION OPTIONS COACHING Coaching is a tremendous value that s available at no cost to you. Here are two of the coaching options available for EASY START CALLS & MAILINGS Are you thinking about a lifestyle change, but not sure how to get started? Well, StayWell can help! The Easy Start Phone + Mail program combines phone calls with a professional health coach and home mailings to get you thinking about your health and what lifestyle changes you can make that support your goals. The program kicks off with a coaching call to discuss your current health. Plus, the health coach will help you determine one small step you can take toward better health. It could be as simple as eating an extra serving of vegetables or getting in a 15-minute walk after dinner, once a week. PHONE COACHING Making a healthy change to your lifestyle and sticking with it isn t always easy especially when you re doing it alone. With phone coaching, you ll work one-on-one with a trained health coach to achieve your health goals. Together, you ll create a game plan that s right for your health status, your medical conditions and your personal goals. You decide what to work on and set your own pace. Your coach will help you get inspired, find the right resources and make positive changes to your health choices. Your coach will follow up about a month later to see how you re doing. Each phone call will be followed by an educational mailing for you to review on your own. 11 NUMBER FOUR STAY MOTIVATED. Living healthy is all about lifestyle. Incorporating healthy eating and exercise into your everyday schedule isn t always easy, but it can be done. Here are some quick tips to help. GRAB A FRIEND. Eating healthy and exercising can be more fun when you do it with friends or family. It can be as simple as challenging each other to order a healthy entrée next time you go out for dinner or, setting a goal to go to the gym together three times a week. TAKE A WALK. No matter if you re on your own or with a friend, a quick walk around the neighborhood (or office) is a simple way to boost your energy and burn a few calories. (30 minutes of walking burns about 100 calories.) MAKE YOUR NUMBERS A PRIORITY. An annual physical helps you keep track of health measurements, like cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Plus, it gives you an opportunity to talk with an expert about what you can do to make a positive change.
