1 Yavapai \ College The department strives to deepen students understanding of young children, families and the teaching learning process. The early childhood profession provides care and education for children ages birth through age eight. This profession is vital to the health of families and success of schools throughout our communities.
2 Yavapai \ College Students who complete the program may: 1. Teach in an infant toddler program, preschool or work in a school age program 2. Open a child care business, family child care program, private child care center or assisting in a public school early childhood program 3. Transfer to a four year program to continue in a field of study relating to children, schools or families 4. Learn more effective parenting skills/strategies 5. Become a foster parent 6. Work as a head teacher or teaching assistant in an early childhood classroom setting (i.e. Head Start or other preschool setting)

6 Yavapai College NAEYC-YC \ (formerly Future Teacher s Club) NAEYC YC has student members. NAEYC (National lassociation i for the Education of Young Children) is a national affiliation for the early childhood profession (serving birth through third grade) Yavapai College club sponsors an annual fall Scholastic Book Fair. Proceeds from the book fair support club activities and book contributions to local schools, head starts and children s groups a summer school supply drive is also an annual event. Plans are being made to hold Community wide Literacy Festival beginning April 2010.

12 The Yavapai Region In the region, only six early care and education centers are accredited. There is inadequate access to early care and education settings for infants and toddlers. In the U.S., 40 percent of all infants and toddlers are in care that is inadequate.
13 Local Priorities and Strategies Expand families access to high quality, diverse and relevant information and resources to support their child s optimal development. Expand Parenting Education programs. Yavapai College has provided monthly parent education opportunities this year. Additional parent education opportunities are planned for
14 Local Priorities and Strategies Improve access to quality early care and education programs. Implement a scholarship program. Approved centers and homes will receive reimbursement to offset the costs of lowering fees to low income families meeting established criteria. (Funding will be pursued to support Del E. Webb families.)
