4 STUDIO CAMBRIDGE 2015 Learning at Studio Cambridge Teaching and methodology Our teaching methodology for all courses and all ages has been in continuous development during our more than 60 years of teaching English as a foreign language. We use up-to-date techniques and technology, of course, and we have a detailed and effective curriculum. However, our greatest contribution is to provide you with interesting, stimulating, and personalised teaching at the appropriate level teaching that meets your needs and challenges you to succeed. Classes at the right level We offer courses at all levels from beginner to advanced. You will be tested on your first day by an experienced and qualified teacher and placed in a class at the level which is right for you. The table below shows the six main levels used by Studio Cambridge (although each main level is normally sub-divided into further levels). We organise a variety of activities to introduce you to British culture, and full-day excursions to London and other places of interest. All activities are organised and led by helpful Studio Cambridge staff. You will be surrounded by the English language 24 hours per day. You will hear English spoken by English people. You will speak English constantly in real-life situations and you will be immersed in British culture. 6 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS THE SCHOOLS Experienced One of the longest-established English language schools in Britain, we have been part of Cambridge s education scene since We are well known and respected in Cambridge. Privately owned Studio Cambridge is not one of a chain of schools. We are privately owned and managed. All of our central services such as Accommodation and Welfare, Activities Office, Academic Manager, the Director of Studies and the school directors are based at our main school in Cambridge. Two locations 1. Our main school, during the academic year Our main school, including our management offices, is open year-round. It is located in impressive 19th century buildings belonging to Cambridge University. Classes are held here during the academic year (September to June). The school is just 15 minutes walk from the centre of Cambridge and 3 minutes from the main railway station, from where there are frequent train services to London. In this way, we all get to meet and to know our students and are able to respond quickly without needing to contact head office. Big but friendly Although we are not a small school, we treat our students as individual people. As the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) wrote after their visit: Pastoral care is outstanding. Clearly identified support processes ensure individual students needs are catered for. We typically have between 200 and 300 students at school each day. This is an ideal size because: We usually have at least 15 classes running at the same time, so can teach at all levels from beginner to advanced; You will meet fellow students from countries all over the world (see Student nationalities on page 9); We can organise a wide variety of social, sports and cultural activities which are free of charge; We can give you our personal attention in all aspects of your stay at Studio Cambridge. 7 THE SCHOOLS 2. Our summer school (July and August) In the summer, classes are held in the renowned Hills Road Sixth Form College (HRSFC). HRSFC is one of the most outstanding schools in Britain, sending more students to Oxford and Cambridge universities than any other state college in Britain. It is just 10 minutes walk from our main school and has excellent, modern facilities, including: Student ages The average age of students taking our Intensive English Courses is 22 years. The minimum age is 16 years. However, at certain times of the year we run our Sir George Language Camp for young learners aged years old at our main school in Cambridge (see page 46). During those times, if you are aged 19 years old or over, your classmates will not be younger than 16 years. 8 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS ACCOMMODATION Homestays - living with local people Living with a host family in their private home - a homestay - is the best way to experience England at first hand. All our hosts are known to us personally and we visit all of them at least once every year. They provide a relaxing and friendly environment, a clean and comfortable bedroom, good food, and a quiet place for study. Homestays are normally located less than 30 minutes from school on foot, by bicycle or using the frequent bus services. Our hosts are typical of British and Cambridge society as a whole: of different ages and occupations and from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. If we place another student in your homestay, he or she will not be a native speaker of your language and your only means of communication, therefore, will be English. There are three types of homestay accommodation: Homestay Three Star Good, clean accommodation. Homestay Four Star As above, but of a particularly high standard, in a larger home or with additional facilities. Homestay Five Star Executive-standard, usually in a large house and typically providing a bathroom for your private use. Available exclusively to students aged 18 or more years. Your bedroom You will have a single room, although double rooms are available for couples. Your clothes will be washed and your bed linen and towels will be changed once per week. Your meals Your homestay hosts will provide breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday and all meals at weekends. Lunch is available in school, at the Studio Café, from Monday to Friday, at an additional cost. Residential accommodation In a student residence you live with other Studio Cambridge students not a family and you must buy and cook your own food. A Studio Cambridge residence is right for you only if you: Are aged 18 years or more Are mature and responsible Will cook your own meals Will keep your bedroom and other parts of the house clean and tidy Will wash your own clothes Will be happy sharing the residence with as many as 19 other students Will pay a 100 deposit on arrival and be responsible for damages We have three residences for the exclusive use of our own students: Cherry Tree House From this large house it is just 5 minutes walk to Hills Road Sixth Form College, 15 minutes (1 km) to our main school, and 25 minutes into the centre of Cambridge. It is 15 minutes walk into the centre of Cambridge. It is located in a student residential area called CB1. The CB1 development has a range of other new buildings, including shops, restaurants, bars and homes, offering a young lifestyle. CB1 is in central Cambridge, close to the railway station, and 5 minutes walk to Studio Cambridge and to Cambridge Leisure Park with cinema, bowling, gym, bars and restaurants. Your safety and welfare are our most important responsibility. 1. Our Accommodation and Welfare office has trained staff and an experienced Welfare Officer. 2. You will be given a 24-hour emergency telephone number to contact experienced Studio Cambridge staff at any time. 3. 10 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS CAMBRIDGE Cambridge is one of Britain s most beautiful and historic cities The city of Cambridge Cambridge has been one of the world s greatest university cities for over 800 years. It is known throughout the world for its mediaeval university colleges, impressive architecture, the peaceful River Cam, and its green parks and gardens. With its historic buildings and beautiful setting, the city of Cambridge is an excellent place in which to learn English. But Cambridge is not only about tradition; it is modern, too. With a population of 100,000 residents and 20,000 university students, Cambridge is an exciting place in which to live and study. It is small enough to get around easily on foot or by bicycle, but big enough to have all the shops, restaurants, cinemas, theatres, clubs, museums, galleries and sporting facilities that you may need. Of course, if you want to visit a really big city, London is just 45 minutes away by train. Student nationalities Students come to Studio Cambridge from eighty countries and speak dozens of languages. The mix of nationalities changes from year to year and the time of year. 11 CAMBRIDGE AND ACTIVITIES Activities (at no additional cost) It is very important that you continue speaking English with your friends and classmates after your lessons are finished for the day, and that you get to see as much as you can in your free time. Therefore, we include a choice of at least five activities each week which are completely free of charge. These are charged as an additional cost. 12 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS EFL 20 Levels Content: Lessons: Start dates: Duration: Students per class: General English 20 lessons per week (15 hours) Every week (Mondays) 2 to 50 weeks 13 average, 16 maximum The course Our EFL 20 course is in general English, with no specialisation. It consists of 20 lessons each week, typically from 09:15 to 12:45 each day, Monday to Friday. It is ideal for students who prefer to have their afternoons free. The content of the course differs according to the level of each class. However, all courses include the study of grammar, speaking and pronunciation, writing skills, and listening and reading comprehension. Methodology We adapt our teaching to the needs and learning styles of our students, following three guiding principles: 1. The teaching will be balanced with practice - you will learn and practise English, with an emphasis on speaking. 2. Lessons will be centred around you - you will not spend all your time listening to the teacher but will be busy using English in the classroom. The heart of the EFL 28 Intensive Course Students taking our EFL 28 course (see pages 13-16) take the EFL 20 course during the mornings and then study from a choice of options in the afternoons. The EFL 20 course is highly structured and effective and is supported by activities taking place in and outside the classroom. Your placement and progress tests On the first day of your course you will take a written and oral test to allow us to assess your knowledge of English and so to place you in a class at the right level for you. At the end of each week you will take another test to make sure that you have understood the work done during the week and that you are continuing to improve. The test also allows us to confirm whether your current class is still at the right level for you. 3. The language we teach will be recycled - we will not allow you to forget what you have learnt. 13 EFL 20 The timetable Classes are held from 09:15 to 12:45 each day, Monday to Friday. A typical day, at the Intermediate level (level 4) is as follows: 09:15-10:45 Two lessons (90 minutes) in grammar and speaking 10:45-11:15 Break for tea or coffee in the café 11:15-12:45 Two lessons (90 minutes) in pronunciation and listening skills 12:45-13:45 Lunch Afternoon Free to take part in the social and sports activities for the afternoon or to undertake private study in the Learning Centre. 17:00 - Return to host family or residence for dinner Further social activities with friends and / or homework Modern technology Lessons regularly incorporate modern media, including listening exercises based on Internet sources, video clips and the latest news. All our classrooms have WiFi, data projectors and speakers. The Director of Studies Our Director of Studies main role is to make sure that you are happy with your course and that you are making the fastest possible progress. You will meet him on the first day and you can get his advice and support at any time during your course. Interesting teachers Tutorials You will have the opportunity for tutorials (private meetings with your teacher) to discuss your individual needs and progress. Your Study Plan Based on the personal goals identified in your tutorials and your work in class your teacher will give you a personalised Study Plan. This will guide you to work on those areas of English on which you need to focus to improve your command of the language. Self-study and teacher-supported study in the Learning Centre You can visit our Learning Centre before or after lessons to work on the areas identified in your Study Plan. Here you will have access to a range on materials including books, newspapers and magazines, WiFi, 20 PCs with Internet access and free of charge, web sites, CDs and other resources. The Learning Centre is staffed by a qualified teacher who will be happy to give you guidance on any academic questions you may have. Certificate of Studies and Academic Report At the end of your course you will receive a certificate showing the course you have studied and the dates of that course. Your main teacher will also write a personalised Academic Report which shows not just your progress but also the level you have attained in each area of English. This is a very useful document for your future studies or work. Members of our teaching team have many years experience of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) at Studio Cambridge, and often at other schools, colleges and universities in the UK and overseas. Between them, they also have academic backgrounds in Philosophy, English Literature, IT, Sciences, Psychology, Law, Business, Politics, Accountancy, History and more. 12

14 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS EFL 28 Levels Content: Lessons: Start dates: Duration: Students: General English + 6 specialised afternoon options 28 lessons per week (21 hours) Every week (Mondays) 2 to 50 weeks 13 average, 16 maximum English + 5 specialised afternoon options The EFL 28 course is the most effective way to improve your English in the shortest possible time. 1. Intensive The course includes 28 lessons (21 hours of 60 minutes) of teacher-led instruction in the classroom; homework and out-of-class assignments; optional study in the Learning Centre; private meetings with your teacher (tutorials) In addition to your formal lessons, you will be taking part in social activities with fellow students from around the world and speaking English with them and you will be living in a homestay or residence where the only means of communication will be English. Who knows? Soon you might be dreaming in English! 3. Specialised With the assistance of your teacher or the Director of Studies, you can choose the afternoon option / specialisation which is most useful for you and relevant to your needs and interests (see pages 15 and 16). For example: Option 2 Cultural and Linguistic Studies if you want to learn more about British history or work more on your grammar Option 3 English for Business if you will be using English in a working environment Option 5 IELTS Preparation if you are planning to take the IELTS exam or wish to improve your study skills 2. Demanding The lessons are dynamic: they require you to be involved and to use your fast-developing mastery of the language in the classroom. You will not just sit quietly taking notes. The English being taught will be at your level, and classes are small: a maximum of 16 students and an average of 13 in each class. Personal attention is assured. Weekly progress tests and regular tutorials will ensure that you are challenged to do your personal best. 13

You will meet him on your first day and you will be able to ask for his advice at any time during your course. Tutorials A tutorial is a private meeting with your teacher, in which you can discuss the progress you have made and what you need to do next to reach your goals. Progress tests At the end of each week your teacher will design a test on the study areas for that week. This test will help you measure your progress. Exit test At the end of your course you will take an exit test. This will measure your level of English at the end of your course and, by comparing the results with those of your placement test, your overall progress. Study longer for less The EFL 20 and EFL 28 courses cost less per week the longer you study. From 10 weeks + you can save up to 35% in tuition fees. See our Dates and Fees list for information. If you are staying for 10 weeks or more, you can move from the EFL 28 course to our examination courses as you progress in your studies. 14

16 INTENSIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS EFL 28 Afternoon options 1 Start EFL 28 Option 1 - Language Skills Plus Dates - Every week Levels Duration - 2 to 50 weeks This option builds on your morning lessons. Each lesson focuses on one of the four main language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Exciting, practical materials and techniques are used, such as radio interviews, magazine articles, songs and film clips, followed by a discussion of their content. There is additional emphasis on vocabulary and pronunciation. 2 Start EFL 28 Option 2 - Cultural and Linguistic Studies Dates - Every week (subject to availability) Levels Duration - 2 to 12 weeks This option covers a range of cultural and linguistic areas. The course includes: English literature Film and video International studies Grammar workshop Writing workshop Pronunciation clinic we examine extracts from some of the English language s greatest authors, poets and dramatists improve your listening skills and learn about video recording and editing discuss international issues with your teacher and classmates from around the world to build on the grammar studied during your morning lessons the language and techniques of formal, informal and creative writing emphasis on accent, stress, and difficult sounds, with personalised help from your teacher 3 Start EFL 28 Option 3 English for Business Dates - Every week (subject to availability) Levels Duration - 2 to 12 weeks This option develops your fluency in English in the environment of international business and the English-speaking workplace. The course specialises in communication and looks at areas such as: Business correspondence and Contracts and formal writing Business plans and proposals Verbal presentations for conferences and meetings Preparing and analysing reports Interviews giving and taking Telephone skills Sales negotiation Your teachers will, of course, be qualified professionals in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). However, many of them also have experience in the world of business, finance and law. Similarly, your classmates will be from countries all over the world and it is fascinating to compare business practices from one country to another. 15

17 EFL 28 AFTERNOON OPTIONS 4 Start Option 4 IELTS Foundation (with a focus on reading and writing) Dates - Every week Levels 3 4 Duration - 2 to 12 weeks This option can be taken on its own or before taking Option 5 (IELTS Preparation) or our IELTS Examination Course IELTS 28 (see pages 17 and 18). It focuses on the Reading and Writing sections of the IELTS exam. The aim of the course is to bring your reading and writing skills up from IELTS bands 3.0 and 4.0 to band 5.0. It will be useful if you are planning to study on a foundation course at an English-speaking university. It is of particular benefit if your native language does not use the Roman alphabet. Each of the programmes is designed for a specific age group and includes every aspect of your stay with us in England. The camps are held at our own school and at famous schools, colleges and universities. We have been running our camps for more than 40 years. New for 2015 All our camps include English language classes, social activities, sports and excursions. 28 SUMMER CAMPS Sir Edward THE TOWN Ely (pronounced to rhyme with freely ) is a beautiful, peaceful city in the heart of the Cambridgeshire countryside: the ideal setting for children. It is 25 kilometres north of Cambridge and 125 kilometres from London. Its magnificent cathedral, established in 1083, dominates the city and makes this one of the finest and most unspoilt mediaeval cities in Britain. Many of the ancient buildings are part of King s Ely s teaching centres and student residences. The city centre has a traditional English feeling, with shops and a market square. 32 SUMMER CAMPS THE TOWN Dating from the eighth century, the town of Reading (pronounced Redding ) is in the Royal County of Berkshire and situated on the River Thames. It is only 65 kilometres from central London (25 minutes by train), and 45 kilometres from London s Heathrow airport. 31Sir Richard Reading is a vibrant and prosperous town and is considered one of Britain s top 10 shopping cities, with several shopping areas including the riverside Oracle Centre. Reading is located in some of southern England s loveliest countryside and is close to famous sights such as the River Thames, Windsor Castle, Eton College and Ascot racecourse. 53 TERMS AND CONDITIONS These Terms and Conditions apply both to the student and to his or her parent or guardian if the student is under the age of 18 years (the person who signs the Application Form). The words you and your, therefore, apply to both the student and his or her parent or legal guardian. The text in black refers to all students. Text in blue refers to students applying for, or taking, our Intensive English Courses. Text in green refers to students applying for, or taking, our Summer and Winter camps. Your application 1. This brochure and the Course Fees and Application leaflet supersede all previous versions. 2. We undertake to offer our courses and services as described in the brochure. We are, however, reliant on the accuracy of applications for enrolment when assigning students to courses and accommodation (by age or nationality, for example). 3. We do not accept responsibility for the provision of any services that are not expressly mentioned in the brochure. 4. All courses are offered subject to demand. 5. Where insufficient bookings lead us to cancel any course mentioned in the brochure, we will make every effort to offer you an alternative course. 6. If we are unable to accept your application for enrolment, we will offer you an alternative course or course start date or will suggest a similar course at a comparable school. If these are not acceptable to you, we will refund all monies paid. 7. We reserve the right not to accept any application. In the event that your application is declined, all monies received will be refunded in full. 8. Once your application has been received, and the enrolment confirmed, a binding contract exists between you and Studio Cambridge. 9. Once a contract exists, all fees are due for the full period of your course. 10. Payments may not be made in instalments. 11. The person signing the application takes responsibility for paying all required fees. 12. Fees must be received by Studio Cambridge no less than four weeks before the start of your course. Failure to comply with our payment terms may result in your enrolment being cancelled. 13. In compliance with British government regulations, the School will not accept cash payments in excess of 15,000 or their equivalent. 14. You must pay any bank charges incurred in making the payment to the school. 15. Any change which results in additional charges must be paid for before the change is implemented. Applicants with disabilities 16. Studio Cambridge s main school is located in 100 year old buildings on five floors and without lifts. We have limited facilities for the disabled, therefore, but do our best to make reasonable adjustments in order to accommodate the needs of such students. We also run courses at many other schools and colleges; students are accommodated in student residences or with host families, and social, cultural and sport activities are often included as part of our educational programmes. The suitability and accessibility for disabled students of the schools, the courses and the accommodation are different in each case. If you have any physical, mental or learning impairment or special educational need please inform us prior to enrolment. We will be pleased to advise on the suitability of each of our schools, educational programmes, activities and accommodation to you as an individual. Visas 17. If you come from a country whose nationals are required to be in possession of a visa to enter the United Kingdom, it is your responsibility to obtain that visa. 18. On receipt of your application, plus the deposit or full fees, we will confirm receipt of the application and a place on the course will be kept open for you. 19. The booking itself will not be confirmed until you inform the School that you are in possession of a visa. 20. On request, we will give you a letter confirming that your application has been received. This can be used to support your application for a visa. 21. If your application for a visa is unsuccessful, we will refund all monies paid on receipt of a copy of the letter of refusal from the British authorities (British Consulate or Visa Section of a British Embassy). If an appeal process is available to you, we will only make the refund when the appeal has been unsuccessful. Your course 22. All students are expected to complete the course in which they have enrolled and to attend all classes. If you fail to do so we may advise the British authorities (the Home Office) of your noncompliance with these conditions. 23. If you are dissatisfied with a course, or any aspect of the services offered by Studio Cambridge, you must bring that dissatisfaction to the attention of the Director of Studies or Course Director as soon as possible in order that a solution may be found without delay. 24. Once a complaint has been brought to our attention we will make every effort to resolve the problem within 24 hours. 25. If you are still not happy with the situation you may ask for the matter to be referred to the Operations Director, who will give a decision within 24 hours. 26. We will not accept a complaint after the end of the course, if it has not been brought to our attention as explained above. 27. We expect all our students to be well motivated, polite and considerate towards others, especially their Homestay hosts, and to observe such rules as are at the time in force. 28. We reserve the right to require any student who does not comply with the above to leave the course. In this case, no refund of fees will be made, and any extra costs involved will be the responsibility of the student or his or her parents or sponsor. 29. We reserve the right to ask any student whose course attendance is unsatisfactory to leave the programme. In this case, no refund of fees will be made. 30. In the event that a student is required to leave a course, we will inform the appropriate authorities (such as the British Home Office). 31. By enrolling you on a Studio Cambridge course, your parents/guardians grant you permission to attend any activities organised by the school or arranged by the school through third parties (such as Travelsights Ltd, for excursions). 32. If your English is at the Beginner level and in the unlikely event that there are no other students at your level, we reserve the right to offer you private lessons in lieu of group lessons until you have reached the appropriate level. There will be no additional charge, but the number of private lessons will be provided at a ratio of 1 private lesson = 3 group lessons. 33. We do not accept liability for the loss of, or damage to, any person s property while on the School s premises. We do not accept any liability for loss or damage in which our students are involved. 34. We will hold you liable for any wilful damage you may cause and you will be asked to pay for the cost of repair or replacement. 35. With a minimum of one weeks notice and the agreement of the Director of Studies, students who have been studying for 12 weeks or longer may take a one week holiday, for every 12 weeks of their studies. Such holidays may only be taken if they begin and end on weekends. Subject to your hosts agreement, you may return to, and leave your belongings at, your homestay during this time. In this case, a fee may be charged. 36. We shall not be liable to you in the event that any service contracted to be supplied becomes impossible to supply because of any circumstances, such as industrial dispute, which are outside our control. For students taking an Intensive English Course Cancellation of your application 37. If we receive cancellation of your course, in writing, more than four weeks before the course starts, you will be responsible for paying just the Registration Fee ( 80.00). 38. If you cancel a course, in writing, and we receive this notification less than four weeks before the course starts, you will be responsible for paying the Registration Fee and Deposit (a total of ). 39. If we do not receive your cancellation in writing, or do so after the course in which you are enrolled has started, your cancellation will be treated as termination of the course. The conditions pertaining to termination are given below. Termination of your course or accommodation 40. If you wish to withdraw from your course (the lessons) once it has started, you must give four weeks written notice or make payment of Tuition fees in lieu of notice. A refund will then be made of 50% of the Tuition fees for the unused portion of the course in excess of the four weeks notice period. 41. If you wish to withdraw from your accommodation it will be kept available, and must be paid, until the Saturday of the week after you give us notice. A refund will then be made of 100% of the Accommodation fees remaining from that Saturday onward. 42. Please note: the insurance policy (included in the fees) covers you for cancellation or withdrawal from a course due to illness or other compelling reasons. If you are eligible for a refund under the provisions of this insurance, no further refund will be made by the School. Details of the insurance are available from Studio Cambridge. For students taking a Summer or Winter camp Cancellation of your application 43. If we receive cancellation of your course, in writing, more than four weeks before the course starts, you will be responsible for paying just the deposit ( ). 44. If you cancel your course less than four weeks before the course starts, or if you fail to cancel, you will be responsible for paying the full fees for your course. Termination of your course 45. No refunds will be made for early withdrawal from a course. Please note: the insurance policy (included in the fees) covers you for cancellation or withdrawal from a course due to illness or other compelling reasons. If you are eligible for a refund under this insurance, no further refund will be made by the School. Details of the insurance are available from Studio Cambridge. Refunds 46. Refunds will be made only to the person (such as a parent) or organisation (such as a Studio Cambridge agent) from whom we received the fees. Refunds can only be made to you if you originally paid the fees directly to Studio Cambridge yourself. All refunds will be made to the original payer s bank account or credit card and will not be made in cash. 47. Refunds will not be given for any part of the programme (such as an excursion) missed because of your arrival or departure arrangements or for any other reason. 48. All refunds will be made in Sterling only. 49. Any bank or other charges payable will be deducted from the money refunded to you. 50. Any refunds made will be based on the published fees for the length of the course taken. Your agreement to these terms and conditions 51. By signing the application form, you or your parents/guardians: agree to inform us of any condition, including allergies, that could affect you or your medical treatment. authorise Studio Cambridge to take appropriate action in the case of a medical emergency; authorise our First Aid staff to suggest non-prescription medicines when appropriate; authorise Studio Cambridge to grant permission to any medical practitioner to examine you, treat you and to make referrals as required; grant you permission to attend any activities organised by the school or arranged by the school through third parties acknowledge that the person signing the application form is responsible for paying all costs incurred. 52. You or your parents/guardians also grant permission for Studio Cambridge to include you in photographic images (whether still or moving) of the school and to use the images for the promotion of the school in brochures, in social media (e.g. Facebook) and on the Studio web site. 53. Signing the application form or enrolling online implies your understanding and acceptance of these Terms and Conditions, and of the information contained in the brochure, and the Fees and Application form.
